Wednesday a.m. things

Things continue to just sort of sit, while we wait on the Ben Sheets situation to play out...

With just three days to go before the DMN quits writing about the Rangers, Richard Durrett has a story up about Michael Young's move to third base, going over in some detail the changes and adjustments he has to make.

That's it for this morning...

Very cool

Its funny the different personalities of the guys – Main and Murphy are obviously very precise (“woke up at 6:30, breakfast at 7:30, it was organized like this…” whereas Kiker appears more laid back in his responses.

Excellently compiled and presented.

Early on a question formed in my mind about how big a carrot-on-a-stick this mini-camp was to these guys on the cusp of their career homestretch. By the end I got my answer. Nice, JP.

Has Young's off-season prep

ever been a problem in the past?

As mentioned previously, I more worried about JD making a desperate bonehead trade although those fears are somewhat alleviated by the fact that big trades now have to be ok’d by Nolan Ryan.

Point being, there are bigger things to worry about than Michael Young.

I believe what JD said was that Elvis will be ready this year. Not necessarily now. If they feel he is going to be ready sometime during the season it would be best to move Young now rather than either having to hold Elvis back or move Young midseason.

Question for Josey

Do you think JD is the same quality general manager as he was three years ago? Has he gotten better or worse, or is he terrible and will always be terrible?

by cstorm15 on Jan 28, 2009 12:56 PM CST up reply actions

Do you really have to ask?

Josey’s response. What has he done in The Show? Prospects are just that prospects and until they get to The Show that’s what they will always be. But now that Nolan makes all the big decisions those prospects look a lot better than they did before Nolan got here. JD is just terrible and without Nolan would be out of baseball altogether.

Is Ron Washington still the manager of this team?

If so, JD hasn’t made very large strides as a GM.

"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

by Josey Wales on Jan 28, 2009 5:07 PM CST up reply actions

Really?

Is that your only evidence that JD hasn’t improved as a GM?

Do you have anything else, or is this it?

by cstorm15 on Jan 29, 2009 10:59 AM CST up reply actions

My only evidence?

Hardly.

The worst pitching staff in baseball was assembled by noneother than JD.

The worst defensive team in baseball was assembled by noneother than JD.

Both the pitching & defense (and the manager) were the blatant weak parts of the club going into 2008 so JD carefully assessed those needs and then spent $ 9 million on JJennings, Broussard and Fukomori.

During the season, the team broke the gate 7-16. Scouts said they had never seen a team in memory that played a “looser, more unfundamental style of baseball” than the Texas Rangers. JD then proclaimed to the world “I’m a Ron Washington Man.”

He failed to get anything of value for Milton Bradley (having his best year ever) or Gerald Laird. With able replacements for Laird readily available after the team was out of contention, JD sat there like a potted plant while Washington played Laird 39 of this team’s last 53 games.

As evidenced by MYoung’s response to JD about switching positions, nobody in the room has respect for the GM (also corroborated by Kevin Mench a couple of weeks ago).

So no, I do not believe JD has become a better GM than he was when he took over in October ‘05. The only difference now is that Nolan is his boss which provides some comfort but jeeeez, can you imagine Billy Beane having somebody like Reggie Jax (or another former A’s great) in place to act as his personal governor to make sure he doesn’t screw up any more?

"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

by Josey Wales on Jan 29, 2009 11:22 AM CST up reply actions

I don't understand
The only difference now is that Nolan is his boss which provides some comfort

Why should that provide any comfort? Nolan has no experience. He’s just a guy who pitched into his 40s and that people generally like and listen to.

Both the pitching & defense (and the manager) were the blatant weak parts of the club going into 2008 so JD carefully assessed those needs and then spent $ 9 million on JJennings, Broussard and Fukomori.

What would you have done? And don’t answer with “well I wouldn’t have done THAT.” I want to know what you would have done to bring in some stopgaps during 2008, which was a rebuilding year.

And you need to remember that. 2008 was not a contention year. You are wrong to think that JD should have done more to be a winner in 2008. The 2008 offseason was less about winning 2008 than it was winning in 2010.

To think about this another way, the organization as a whole is much stronger now than it was in 2005 and is in a much better position to someday win a World Series. You can criticize how the team got here from 2005 to 2008, but you’d have to agree that progress has been made overall. And if that’s the case, and if we’re on the right track towards winning, then you’d have to have some faith that JD will continue to go down that path.

Or you could pretend that JD can do no right and Nolan can do no wrong. It’s your choice, really.

by cstorm15 on Jan 29, 2009 11:44 AM CST up reply actions

If 2008 was not about contention

why hold on to Milton and why let Gerald Laird play as much as he did when this team was out of contention when you had players with much more upside on the bench?

When you have a small market payroll and 2008 is not about contention, why would you give $ 9 million to JJennings, Broussard and Fukomori?

Your original question was whether or not I thought JD was the same quality GM he was three years ago and my answer is a resounding hell yes – that’s why Nolan Ryan is here.

"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

by Josey Wales on Jan 29, 2009 11:53 AM CST up reply actions

It's called a stopgap, dumbass

Investing in one-year players helps the team get by in the shortterm without weighing the team down in subsequent years. Of course we wanted to win some in 2008, but it was a second priority to building towards the future. How is that so hard to understand?

And as for Nolan, given how supportive Nolan has been of JD and his decisionmaking (supporting the Young decision, supporting the decision to keep Washington back in April, supporting the longterm rebuilding effort), it would seem as though Nolan disagrees with you.

For example, if JD is at fault because Ron Washington is still the manager, then isn’t Nolan equally at fault?

by cstorm15 on Jan 29, 2009 12:55 PM CST up reply actions

Do your widdle

baseball feelings get hurt when I’m so tough on JD?

You asked a question but didn’t like the answer.

"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

by Josey Wales on Jan 29, 2009 1:17 PM CST up reply actions

No, it's funny

I’m not even a huge fan of JD. I think it’s just funny to call you out on some of the stupid stuff you say. If you’re being a dumbass, then it’s only fair to call you a dumbass. And if you want to use my “insults” as an excuse to

Also, I really would like your explaination regarding why Nolan has allowed Washington remain manager. And more importantly, an explaination as to how you can support Nolan and bash JD when Nolan supports JD.

by cstorm15 on Jan 29, 2009 2:16 PM CST up reply actions

The only difference now is that Nolan is his boss which provides some comfort

Why are you comfortable with Nolan if he’s “f’ing up big time”?

As it stands now, Nolan and JD seem to come as a package. Going forward, if the team makes a move you agree with, you agree with both Nolan and JD. If they make a move you disagree with, you disagree with both Nolan and JD. You can’t like Nolan and hate JD.

by cstorm15 on Jan 29, 2009 4:52 PM CST up reply actions

The Rangers have done something I like...

While I agree that this has been a slow Off season it may be very good for the Rangers.

The move of Young to 3B though not smooth will help this team. The saying goes “Pitching and defense wins games.” MY at 3B and Vizquel/Andrus at SS should be a big help to the defense IMO. Last year the Rangers scoed more than any other team in the league 5,56 runs per game but also has the wosrt ERA by far 5.37 vs a league ERA of 4.36. What made things even worse was the 132 errors (most in the league) and the 107 unearned runs. An improvement in defense is an essential element to making this team competitive IMHO.

Now the potential additon of Sheets could mark this off-season of as the defining turning point of the rebuilding process (IF Sheets signs here and IF he is healthy.) Yeah that is two big IF’s in case someone missed it. Sheets changes the entire staff by moving everyone down a spot in the rotation. Suddenly Milly and Padilla are a nice 2-3 combo instead of a well below average 1-2 and so on down the rotation and into the farm. Again all depends on health.

The off season is not over yet so there is still time for quite a bit to happen. I doubt the Rangers do a whole lot but moving MY to third, signing Vizquel are a solid start. JD and staff are in on Sheets which is a positive sign. Don’t make a panic move just yet.

Insignia 42" 1080p HDTV at Best Buy

Pretty affordable. But, I’d be a little leery of buying an Insignia. Check the consumer reports.

I just got a cheap Vizio but have no complaints.

Can't recommend one exactly

but if you go to Amazon , that’s the top rated TVs in your price range that are 40" and 900 bucks or less. Don’t know if you want to go that route, but you can find a lot of feedback on products from Amazon so you can be more sure of what you are getting.

My sister owns an electronics wholsale company and...

…she says Samsung and Sharp are the two best. Sony is good but priced higher. We have 2 Samsung (37" and 42") HDTV’s and both have been great. Use the Amazon feedback to help you decide.

Run over to your nearest circuit city

They’re going out of business, and have to sell all their stuff, so all of its on sale. You’re bound at least to find a tv that’s around that range you set for about 20% off

Is it Spring Training Yet?

by SCDP on Jan 28, 2009 2:35 PM CST up reply actions

Ohhh, you should research that opine.

The sale is being held by a liquidation company, not the retailer. Prices have been marked up from previous, then marked down. Also, you will have warranty issues.
