MLB Trade Rumors is reporting that Jon Garland is taken now. Which is great news, because it will shut up the voices that keep saying the Rangers should go get him...

From Rotoworld:
The Arizona Republic reports that Jon Garland and the Diamondbacks have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with an option for 2010.
According to the newspaper, “Garland’s guaranteed money is believed to be in the $6 million to $8 million range” and it sounds like the option is a mutual one. Garland reportedly turned down a two-year, $14 million offer from Arizona last week. Jan. 28 – 11:35 am et

Wow
if you had told me in September that Garland would have been available on that deal I’d have said sign him. He’s healthy and not terrible, and I can be just fine with a team paying that on a short term commitment to him.

I
doubt he would have dared considered a one year deal from Texas, but yeah that is a sweet deal the D-backs got.

A couple of Fangraph links
Why Johnson is better than Garland
Why a pitcher like Sheets is so much more valuable than a 200 innings guy like Garland
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I fully realize that
and I did not post that to say I’d prefer Garland over those guys. My comment was more about the market and how far the prices have fallen. A few months ago most thought Garland would get a multi-year deal for a Millwood like salary.

Details:
I think this was kinda high. Perhaps it didn’t help lower Sheets’ price tag.
Diamondbacks signed RHP Jon Garland, who had been with the Angels, to a one-year, $6.25 million contract with a mutual option for 2010.
The mutual option is worth $10 million and the Diamondbacks can buy it out for $2.5 million. If Garland declines the option himself, he’ll get $1 million. It seems unlikely that Arizona will want to pay him $10 million for 2010, so the deal basically becomes a one-year, $8.75 million contract for a guy who had a 4.90 ERA and 90/59 K/BB ratio in 196 2/3 innings last season. Garland has been very durable, starting 32 or 33 games in seven straight seasons, but he’s an expensive innings eater for a team that supposedly had budget problems.

That's kind of
a crappy option for the team.
