Happy Birthday, Gary Mielke
Happy birthday to Gary Mielke, who turns 46 today...
Mielke was a middle reliever who pitched for the Rangers in 1989 and 1990. I remember thinking that it seemed like every time he pitched, the Rangers lost.
And going back and looking at the game logs, it turns out that in 1990, Mielke appeared in 19 games between April 30 and September 4, and every one was a Ranger loss.
He then appeared in 2 wins in a row, and then finished out the season with 4 more Ranger losses, and never pitched in the majors again.

Was Mielke the mop-up guy? Just let him soak up innings in games we knew we were out of?
...Snoop Doggy-Dogg... Ya need to get yourself a jobby-job.
This guy was literally in every pack of '90 Donruss
I probably have a drawerful of Gary Mielke cards back at my mother’s house. Greg Vaughn, Todd Zeile Rated Rookies? Nope! Have another Gary Mielke! Thanks, Donruss!

What an awful baseball card. That stupid red border and the signature text.

Dont forget the totally 80's splatterpaint pattern.

And just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, Fleer farted out this gem of a design the very next year.

Oh, i remember those well.
Just when i thought fleer could do no worse than their hideous 1990 set, out they came with that nasty crap.
I own...
This entire set, I thought this was going to be my retirement when I was 6

thankfully, no
I picked this name to use on messageboard and whatnot back in 2001 when Enron entered into pop culture infamy and have just kept using it.
I remember thinking that it seemed like every time he pitched, the Rangers lost.
For me as a kid, that was Matt Whiteside. I looked at his baseball-reference page the other day, and it turns out he wasn’t as bad as I remembered, but man, as a kid I dreaded every time I saw Whiteside coming in from the bullpen.
Keith Law: (1:45 PM ET ) I think Michael Young should shut his mouth and move to third base.
For me
it was Terry Matthews. Weeble-Wobble, but he won’t fall down. Canseco absolutely destroyed one of his offerings at the old ballpark against a stiff wind.
I'd have to go with
Brian Bohanon..
Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like Tottenham.
My family referred to Terry Matthews as
Big Butt Little Head
you can sorta see it in this picure

Early 90s baseball cards were overrated.

For me, it was pretty much any Ranger relief pitcher of the early 90's
to be totally honest. I remember wishing that Nolan, Charlie, Brown, Witt, Pavlik, Guzman, etc. could throw a complete game every time out just so I wouldn’t have to see the dudes in the pen come in and toss gasoline all over the place and drop a match. I think I was so traumatized that I can’t even remember the names of any of them asides from Russell. Well, until this thread that is. Thanks for dredging up the pain.
Roger Pavlik...
Wow, haven’t thought about him in a looooong time

Pavlik is right up there with Matt Whiteside
My dad would get angry every time either one of those guys pitched.
I just took a look at Pavlik’s b-r page. Did you know the league ERA was 5.25 in 1996? Pavlik posted a ghastly 5.19 ERA that year and still managed to have a 101 ERA+.

I liked Pavlik
I strongly remember listening to a start of his against the White Sox while sitting in a WalMart parking lot. One of my stronger baseball memories from back then.
Pavlik and Ken Hill
pitched back to back one hitters against the Tigers in 1996. Maybe his only good game ever.
Were you drinking a 40 for Dean Plamer while listening to the game?
Sheets or bust
Wow, was I ever crushed when that happened to Palmer
That injury was easily one of the most traumatic events of my youth…
Pavlik got into the all start game ONLY because he managed to win a lot

kevin gross.
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

Trying to remember...
Gary Mielke — wasn’t he a skinny sidearmer?
I remember Mark Holtz calling him
the Milk Man
