Benoit Out First Half of Season (Maybe More)
Rangers RHP Joaquin Benoit had arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder Tuesday in Cincinnati.
* * *
"Joaquin was affected most of last season, and it didn't allow him to perform to his abilities," said Rangers GM Jon Daniels. "He attempted to rehab the injury this off-season. He worked hard but the results weren't there. From all accounts, the surgery went well and he can begin the process of strengthening his shoulder now."

From Jamey:
According to at least one local reporter, righthander Joaquin Benoit has had
surgery for a rotator cuff tear and, at best, will return late in 2009. But
even that’s probably a longshot.
The 31-year-old is entering the second year of a two-year, $6 million
contract, after which he’ll be a free agent.

This only affirms
in my mind that, more than Ben Sheets, we must sign another reliever. Chad Cordero, Gagne, Guardado, maybe all three! This is getting ridiculous.
However, I will remind you of two things..
1. If Derrick Turnbow is truly healthy, he is Joaquin Benoit of 2007 quality.
2. If we sign Sheets, that could and probably will bump Feldman to the bullpen, and he can take a spot, and I remind you he is effective(not necesarily great) out of the pen.
Its time...

Additionally
IF the Rangers are contenders, then a Joaquin return in August/September might just be that extra arm that is extremely useful late in the season after the roster expands and the arms that have been pitching all year are wearing down.

Do you guys think.....
This makes the Rangers more likely to be on board with a Bowden + Bard deal than holding out for Buccholtz? Is Bard totally ready to pitch in the majors? I personally would rather go Buccholtz or bust, but there’s a reason I’m not the GM of a baseball team.

But it obviously wouldn’t make it less appealing.
the preceding post was a great success.
by DSheppard on Jan 28, 2009 3:20 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Why would this make them do it?
Benoit was going to be a free agent after this year so its not like we need a long term answer in the pen right now. Not saying i wouldn’t do the deal i would have to look at it closer but an injury to Joaquin benoit shouldn’t make us run out and make a hasty deal just to get a reliever.

I didn't say run out and make a hasty deal
I just wondered if they might be more open to considering such a deal. Even though he was going to be a free agent, it’s not like we have tons of pitchers beating down our door to come here, so there was probably a reasonable chance that they would have been interested in re-signing him if he pitched like ’07.
by CS3 on Jan 28, 2009 7:03 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Ok
But what if you are holding out for one package (say Buchholz) would you all of a sudden accept less of a deal just to satisfy a need? Thats what I don’t want them to do.

I prefer Buchholz or bust as well. I am just wondering if more of our pitchers going down with not alot of pitchers that we feel are ready to pitch in the majors if anyone thinks JD might consider a package with more pitchers with less of an upside.

BTW: FCD just started practice this week (their version of pitchers and catchers reporting) so thats fun. the schedule came out today and there isnt a ton of mid day summer games, so they ’re learning. DVB came in last week and solves the left wing problem. kinda exciting. we should be better, if we sign the #10 they are talking about we have a shot to win it all. MLS is friggin crazy.
PS: Notice how im avoiding the LFC discussion? heh. Rafa needs to start El Nino if he wants to keep his damn job, and maybe act like winning league games matters. If Buck just mysteriously didnt start Arod and pulled FOTF in the 7th inning, we’d cut his nuts off. thats 3 games in a row that are ties. makes me wanna puke. YNWA! heh.

For a guy who is supposed to be a setup man, that is terrible, especially since all his other pitches are pretty bad. He can’t dominate with the fastball, can’t compensate using a good arsenal. Benoit is terrible.

Changeup
Changeup sort of relies upon the fastball as those two pitches depend on the speed of each, specifically the difference in speed between the two. And he had good movement on his slider, but couldn’t throw it for strikes.

The only time he could ever be replied upon was in 2007. Ron handled Benoit very nicely that year, and I think people seem to forget that, early in the reason, Ron, not the pitching coach, made the trips out to the mound to talk to Benny which really seemed to give him the confidence and belief in his stuff that he always lacked.

But that was more because he had been so erratic as a starter I still remembered that instead of realizing he was really good as a reliever. In 04 and 05 he went back and forth between starting and relieving. He sucked as a starter so that marred his whole perception. Go look at his game logs
He started out 2005 as a reliever. He had an ERA under 1 through 26 innings in the middle of July. They decided he should try starting. His very first start he gave up 6 runs in 5 innings. They let him start for about 6 weeks and he had an ERA during that span of 5.96. Then he went back to relieving in September and posted a 2.30 ERA during that month. hes a reliever. he has failed as a starter and thrived as a reliever. there is no need to let him start anymore.

You said they should try him in the rotation after tasting a bit of big league success. Do you think 15 innings in September (which you’ve said in the past isn’t near as tough as earlier in the season) is significant? Because before then, he wasn’t having any success unless you count his relief outings earlier in the season.

I read a story a couple of years ago
Where Nolan was in Japan promoting his beef and Bobby Valentine invited him to a game and he threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Valentine says he climbed to the top of the mound in his loafers and dress slacks (obviously with no warming up) and delivered a high eighties fastball right down the middle. At sixty-something years old.
There’s probably a link out there somewhere, but I don’t feel like searching, you’ll just have to believe that I’m telling the truth.

its interesting
one of the reasons mentioned for bringing Andrus up this soon is the FO message that the future is bright, help is on the way, yada yada. With space opening up in the bullpen, will that factor in a decision to feature a young guy halfway through the season (esp. if 2009 goes poorly?) All this in the name of “challenging him”
I know this is in response to the comment below but how much does Feliz have to improve the secondary stuff to function in the bullpen? Also, maybe a stint up in the majors might impress upon him the reality that those secondary pitches need to be more than nominal offerings if he is going to get where he wants to go
by jrams33 on Jan 28, 2009 4:38 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Interesting point
God, I sure hope we don’t turn Feliz into Joba by bringing him up too soon and sticking him in the bullpen. Unless his secondary pitches show they’re are ready to be tested in the majors, I’m for leaving Feliz in AA/AAA all year (at least until September).

You know he would dominate.

I would much rather
have someone with his swing at the plate than on the mound.

I
can remember a time , years ago reading Newberg Reports that Benoit was one of our best prospects. I hope the same fate doesnt befall Feliz or Holland

You are aware that
at least in terms of quality of prospect there is no comparison between those two and Benoit, right? Benoit never made a top 100 list, while Feliz will be around #10 in BA’s this spring. Someone like Hurley or Harrison is a lot more comparable to him than those two, and even they have been more highly regarded throughout their minor league careers than Benoit was.

miserable.
I was counting on pretty big comeback years for Benny and CJ.
Looks like Frankie, CJ, Rupe, Nippert, Madrigal, another lefty (free agency? Gabbard? AJ Murray?) and Turnbow with Mendoza looking on…
I’d personally like to see Mr. Tom Diamond make this team as a bullpen arm; but then again, it’d be nice to see him blossom as a starter.

I ask because I don't know
Does rehabbing ones rotator cuff EVER work out in the long term? Do folks choose this route simply bc an actual surgery to repair the cuff is a kiss of death for pitchers?
It just seems like the rehab route never works out, atleast from I can remember.
Anyone got any factoids on rehabbing vs. surge?
Also, is it Conner or Connor?

Intersting..
e nasty rotator cuff surgery has become the norm for the Rangers the last week. Eric Hurley had the surgery (and work on a frayed labrum) last Wednesday and yesterday Joaquin Benoit was the latest to go through the operation.
It’s natural to wonder why two pitchers are having this surgery just before spring training, isn’t it? Both could miss all of 2009 (Hurley will, Benoit might). I asked GM Jon Daniels about that via email. Here’s his response:
“In both cases, multiple doctors recommended rehab over surgery late last season,” Daniels said. “Unfortunately, they didn’t respond to the rehab programs as we’d hoped. That’s a risk anytime you rehab a shoulder. With Eric in particular, you don’t want to operate on a 23 year old if you can avoid it, and he agreed with that course of action at the time.”
The truth is, both guys were seen by several doctors. They got second opinions from doctors that are not with the club. The normal course of action is to do everything you can to avoid surgery. Surgery is risky and you never know what the outcome is once the pitchers attempt to return. So both guys attempted full rehabs and when that didn’t work, opted for surgery. The down side is if the rehab doesn’t work, it essentially costs you the next season. That’s what’s happened to Benoit and Hurley. The Rangers better hope that’s the end of the injury problems for this season (don’t bet on that one).

Eggs
Think back, long ago, back to a time when Benoit was a starter. Can you remember that? I try not to.

Why not make a play for Joe Beimel?
This bully is starting to get that ripe, workout gear forgotten about for two months in a gym bag scent.
I know this organization likes to point to it’s future (after all BP & BA named us number 1 – YAY !!!!!!) as being quite rosey but it still loves to get bed with players & pitchers who provide one year quick fixes.
Beimel is the type of pitcher who actually might still be effective and useful in 2011.
