It occurs to me...
With Joaquin Benoit out for at least half the season...
And Eric Hurley out for the season (which makes it less likely Scott Feldman will be able to go back to the bullpen)...
The righty relief situation is looking a little thin.
It would be kind of nice if we still had Wes Littleton here. He'd seem to be pretty much a lock for the pen, at this point.

Why?
Right now, JD has said that Feldman and Harrison are in the rotation. A Sheets signing kicks McCarthy out of the rotation.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Strange assumption
I’d assume signing Sheets would just create more competition for the last 2 spots, not automatically bump one guy out of those three.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
Well if
the Rangers have decided on their first 4 rotation spots, then why would signing Sheets make Feldman all of a sudden have to fight for his job. It would still be his job to lose.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
I don't think
the first 4 spots are set in stone, either. After Milly and Padilla those last 3 spots are likely Harrison, Feldman and McCarthy, but are you certain they’re in that order, and are your sure it’s McCarthy that gets bumped?
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
Nothing is guaranteed
but JD said that the rotation right now includes Millwood/Padilla/Harrison/Feldman and then he said the last spot will go to the best of McCarthy, Hurley (before the surgery), and the other options. Sure, Feldman doesn’t have the ceiling that McCarthy does, but he has shown that he can handle the rotation and I think the team values that enough to give him the first shot at it and force McCarthy to wait a bit if they sign Sheets.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
No
Feldman is out of options which is why he gets first dibs. Personally I think if we sign Sheets Harrison will start in OKC barring a terrific spring. McCarthy, if healthy, is just plain better and if hes healthy I can’t see any justification for sending him down to OKC

McCarthy’s a former top prospect whom we got because we thought he was ready for the majors. If he’s healthy, there’s no reason to leave him out of the rotation in favor of a guy we pushed to over three times his previous innings totals in one year.

One contingency of the trade was Boston wouldn’t send another player unless Littleton made their 40.
And if he doesn’t, there’s nothing stopping him re-signing here.
And it wouldn’t have to even be a roster deal.

Well
If he doesn’t make the BoSox pen, he’ll end up on waivers, and the Rangers could claim him and bring him back.
The chances of that seem remote, though. Texas decided they’d rather keep running Jamey Wright out there all summer than take a long look at Littleton out of the pen.

No.
The Sox already sent, um, what’s-his-name to Texas to complete that trade.
BTW AJM, I listened to the last Podcast you guys did, and I liked it quite a bit. But the one thing that stood out to me was the (and I’m looking for a nice word here) lunacy (?) of Evan Grant’s assertion that adding Poveda to Salty would be enough for Buchholz, especially because it would’ve helped with Texas’s (at the time) 40-man roster crunch.
I would suggest that if Boston was going to make a deal like that that
1. Texas probably wouldn’t have made the Littleton deal in the first place, and
2. A guy who will barely make your 40 man roster is probably not good enough to be much incentive either way in a major trade.
Am I misunderstanding his argument? (Which I may well be since I haven’t read his articles which he mentioned in the podcast.) Anyway, it’s something that’s been on my mind and this seems like a strangely appropriate place to make the comment…
"I'd like to f*ck Sandra Bullock." - Pedro Martinez, explaining his secret ambition to Sports Illustrated for Kids.
Poveda will be a 21 year old starting pitcher in AA next year

Huh?
Poveda was just added to the 40 man this winter to avoid rule 5 draft. Hes a legit prospect who will be in AA this year. Hes overshadowed by other more hyped guys but hes a solid prospect
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Poveda's a nice prospect
But he’s a throw-in, a sweetener on a deal.
And for whatever reason, he seems to be the kicker of choice whenever it is suggested that the Rangers would need to add someone to a deal.
I don’t think Salty and Poveda for Buchholz would be doable.

From mlbtr.com
According to Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star-Tribune the Twins have broken off talks with Eric Gagne. Christensen reports that the Twins are now turning their focus to finding eighth-inning relief help through a trade.

is there any chance
we can do a sign and trade for Juan Cruz? that poor guy is getting f’ed by his type A status, but at this point he makes a ton of sense for this team. I suppose, theoretically, we would have to send someone to the D-Backs that would make it worth their while.
Why would anyone...
sign him and give up a draft pick just to trade him?
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
He's saying the D-Backs would sign him
then trade him.

Yeah...
missed the D-Backs part in there. Sorry.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
and that we would have to give up something
that they consider worth the pick they would forfeit. i am not sure if they are holding out hope for a first rounder, but it is more likely a team like the Yanks comes around and signs him because he is certainly worth a 4th or 5th rounder. I have no idea what they would consider fair value in that scenario.
Yeah, it would be an interesting scenario

Don't you have to wait like 150 days or something?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Yes.
But a variation on “sign and trade” is actually being floated by some writers as a way for FA’s who are having trouble because of draft pick compensation/ abr to get around the rule. The idea goes that a team that has already signed a bunch of FAs who have lost their first couple draft picks (like the Yankees) would sign the player to a contract agreed to with a third team. They would then trade the player to that team with the player waiving his rights to block the trade for a minor piece (in the Yankees case someone equivalent to a 4th round pick). The new team gets the player and keeps their 1st/ 2nd round pick.
Of course what it leaves out is that the team that offered arb would be getting screwed out of a good draft pick and would likely have a winnable grievance.
"I'd like to f*ck Sandra Bullock." - Pedro Martinez, explaining his secret ambition to Sports Illustrated for Kids.
Not really; the difference is that the player still has a contract and is under the team’s control and that’s what is being traded.

The 150 day rule on applied to other team's FAs
Would it not be the same as trading a guy after you extended him
Oh, that's "right"
We could ask/demand CJ Wilson to throw right handed. JD and Wash could sit down with him at lunch or maybe at CJ’s pad. Play a little Guitar Hero, talk about wheat grass shakes and meditation. Then JD out of no where would be like, " Starting in spring training we’re gonna have you throw right handed…" CJ would be pissed at first, saying things like “I was born left handed”,and “it’s not fair!” and he may demand to be traded. Once that happens we’ll send in Nolan Forget about the curve ball Ricky, give him the heater Ryan. He’ll meet up with CJ at a Yoga class and smooth things over. Tell him that this is for the team and explain how much respect he would gain. To fill the hole left by switching CJ to right handed relief duty we’ll sign someone old but still great, like “Everyday Eddie” Guardado. And that my friends, is how you fix that. Now, off to watch Hot Stove on the MLB Network.

With the way Free agency is going....
You have to think that all of these vetrans are going to start signing 1 year incentive deals before spring training starts.
we should be able to add 1 or 2 guys with a track record on a 1 year deal.
Gagne- comes to mind. He had sucess here.
Juan Cruz – (hopefully we would have signed sheets so that he would coast the 3rd)
Aki – not sure what his status is….maybe a minor league deal.
Eddie- always seemed to get big outs last year.
Isringhausen- not sure about his health
Chacon
Foulke
C.Cordero
Reyes
at least there are plenty of options…(anyone but Jamey Wright please)
