On Diamond, back during our list I questioned those who had Diamond in the teens. With Gomez I just thought it was nice to see. I suspect that he could be a breakout guy this year if he can get healthy. He has already had nice success in Low A at a young age and is reputed to have good stuff.

He doesn't
Fitt said he topped out at 93 last year. I think it’s his mix of pitches and the way he looks that drew the comp, but he was a little vague.

I have thought that E. Santana was a decent comp for Feliz
I made that remark to Parks at the start of the season and he seemed to think it was decent.

Boy, they're pretty high on Wieland
But so am I, so that’s cool. Dirkatron is going to be pissed though – no Lemon.
Actually, it is kind of hard to believe they have Arias and Bannister on there while snubbing guys like O’Campo, Pimentel (heck, they even tab him as the sleeper, and he’s not on there) and Lemon – even Fabio Castillo. Kinda feels like Bannister is on there simply because we added him to the 40.

Meant to say media rankings
Many of them have him outside of the top 20. He will move up next year
Is it Spring Training Yet?
Bannister in top 30? ...(ahem)
It is interesting how much his stock has risen especially the reports of his velocity this off-season. He started off in the 92-95 range, then we saw 96 and yesterday I saw a 98 reported out of winter ball (callis?). I pick Bannister as a candidate for the most off-season hot air and more likely a guy never to get out of AAA.
Oh, i forgot to add, all this increased hype
and he hasn’t pitched in what more than 2 months?

I think that my wishlist for prospects this year
Is topped by Font staying healthy the full year and showing us his potential. If his fastball is as good as Feliz, then we have the potential to have two true 80 fastball pitches in the system. That would truly be unbelievable.
Btw, number 2 on the wishlist is for Feliz to continue to improve on his secondary pitches

80 pitches
How many true 80 pitches would someone with some scouting knowledge say there are in the majors right now? Johan’s changeup im guessing is an 80?

Says he could be a solid back roto guy
As someone tried to convince me during our ratings, he improved his fastball after returning from his shoulder problem to the 91-94 range. Curve getting better but needs to get stronger mentally (and from what he said I think he mainly means intestinal fortitude).

hmm
could you substitute Kiker for Poveda in the intestinal fortitude dept. and flip their spots?
He's pretty bullish on Kiker's stuff
Mentions that he got back to 90-94 in the second half and was touching 96-97 in the ‘07 playoffs (all of this we all knew of course, but it’s always nice see in print again). Went on at length about his conditioning issue and does not think that intestinal fortitude is a problem at all for Kiker, the opposite actually.

It's a funny thing
BA lists Holland as having the best change-up of the system, but it seems to be an “average” pitch according everybody else. The year before, they listed Kiker as having the best change-up. On the other hand, a lot of us would say that Poveda has a better changeup than either Kiker or Holland. Is this just a difference in opinion or are we just misinformed?
for reference
in his outstanding Q&A, Parks rated the top pitches in the system like this:
1.Neftali Feliz (Fastball)
2.Derek Holland (Fastball)
3.Wilmer Font (Fastball)
4.Neil Ramirez (Curveball)
5.Omar Poveda (Change-up)
6.Tommy Hunter (Curveball)
7.Michael Main (Fastball)
8.Martin Perez (Curveball)
9.Corey Young (Curveball)
10.Pedro Strop (Fastball)

I hope Feliz's changeup becomes the second best pitch in the system.

‘(Expletive) Dave Samson,’ then don’t say anything at all.
So I’m not going to say anything at all.
Is my mother the greatest or what?"
- Mariners GM Bill Bavasi, after signing Ichiro to a $90 million contract
Above-average
is often classified as “plus” or “60”. Technically, “55” can be considered slightly above-average as well, but I find it hard to believe that Poveda’s change is a “55”. The Rangers have it internally graded at 60/65.
Holland's change
is probably a 45 or 50 presently and 55 in the future. He didn’t use it very often, but it’s a good pitch. However, it’s not better than Poveda’s. I also don’t think it’s better than Kiker’s and I don’t think it’s better than Diamond’s. I’ll argue that with anybody including Fitt.
I feel like ranting
In the ‘08 book, Poveda’s change is described as a plus pitch that can sometimes be plus-plus. During the ‘08 season, Poveda’s change didn’t regress. In fact, one might argue that the pitch actually took a step forward thanks to improved command and deception.
Also, naming Holland’s slightly above-average change-up as the best in system is almost as ridiculous as suggesting Poveda’s change regressed from a surefire plus /plus-plus pitch to an above-average description (55*) in this year’s book.
Both examples point to a publication that has become very inconsistent in recent years. I find it especially troubling because many people still take these reports as gospel. Many will read about Holland’s change and assume, as I probably would have a few years ago, that BA’s analysis is the gold standard.
Sorry for the rant, but this really bothers me. Naming Holland’s change and Perez’s curve as the best in the system screams name recognition more than it screams accuracy. Honestly, I expected better from BA.

That really is the point, to me
Ten years ago BA’s information was all most of us had to go on. The fact that guys like Jason Parks and Jason Cole and Jamey Newberg have developed connections with people on the baseball operations side and put the time and effort into traveling and talking to players and all is what gives us enough perspective that we aren’t reliant on whomever BA might choose to write the Rangers’ summary in a given year doing a great job. We can take whatever insight they have and add it to the wealth of information that we’ve been fortunate enough to get from “our” guys (and keep perspective on things like this, where they seem to be off base).

I'm reccing you
Because we need more rants like these.
That Gold Glove for Young was the worst thing that could have happened to Texas - now the guy really believes he's good at short. - Keith Law
I remember Subero
jumping on Poveda’s azz in 07 at BAK for relying on the change too much. Is it possible that BA is disappointed with the very thing which would make Poveda’s change effective – development of a complete repertoire?
Maybe they like the ‘effectiveness’ of Holland’s change vs the ‘effectiveness’ of Poveda’s due to Holland’s repertoire surpremacy from which the change-up’s succesful deception springs.
The moves being made are too extra for my taste.
Effectiveness
Despite having a somewhat straight low 90s fastball and so-so curve, Poveda was still able to strikeout 9.25 per 9 in ’08 thanks, in large part, to his change.
It’s true that Poveda relies on his change too much. His other pitches just don’t compare and he when he gets in trouble he always falls back on his straight change. However, hItters know the pitch is coming and yet the change remains an effective weapon. I think it can be argued that Poveda’s change is one of the more effective pitches in the system for the very fact that his other pitches aren’t as developed and he can still establish above-average dominance numbers.
Of course, if BA did indeed play the “effectiveness” card to formulate their best tools list, they certainly made an error selecting Perez’s curve. It’s a good pitch with plus potential, but I don’t think it was all that effective. Especially in comparison to guys like Ramirez or Hunter who don’t have a well-rounded arsenal at their disposal (yet). Perez would use his spike curve as his out pitch, but his command of the pitch still lags behind his control. It might end up as the most effective curve in the system, but it certainly wasn’t in ’08.
IMO, an under-rated curve:
Hyatt. I watched him pitch twice on video. A fairly hard curve – same small sharp break as Hunter’s. Pretty fearless with it.
The moves being made are too extra for my taste.
Very interesting.

I think that
when BA guys in particular label pitches as above average, they are leaning more to the 55 end, rather than that plus 60-65 range. But I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone call Poveda’s change anything less than plus or 60, so I don’t read anything into the off-hand comment from Fitt. Plus there are plenty of reports from you guys to fill in the blanks.

By the way
Thanks for posting all of this stuff Z. It makes me look forward to reading the book even more.
I listened to a lot of Bakersfield radio broadcasts last season
It seems like Omar’s one of those who would strike out the side on 10 pitches, then gets shelled a couple of innings later. I’m waiting to see how he (and Kiker) does away from Bakersfield with the small park and spongy defense.
The reason that I’ve always been bullish on him is that he just gets a ton of swinging strikes, and they are not on trick pitches either like Danny Ray.
Plus I just have an unreasonable attachment to a good change-up.
Change-ups keep you on your toes.

On that list
I could see having any of the first six there above Smoak. To me, there is no argument that Posey, Matusz, and Hosmer are better prospects than Smoak, the Beckham’s could be more valuable long term due to their positions, and Alvarez is a toss-up, though I would rather have him than Smoak personally. Alonso is also pretty close, but I prefer Smoak to him.
Castro is just silliness, but he obviously likes catchers, what with having Tea #34
While Callis has a higher opinion of him than Goldstein
he is probably his biggest detractor at BA. Andrus ranked #1 last spring despite Callis, and as you see, he is the one of those three who doesn’t have him in his top 50. If you look on BA he had the question of Alcides Escobar versus Andrus posed to him in (I think) an Ask BA, and he chose Escobar.
by Brett Perryman on Jan 30, 2009 8:39 AM CST up reply actions
it was ask BA
A few years down the road, would you rather have Elvis Andrus (Braves) or Alcides Escobar (Brewers)? Is there any other shortstop that you would put in their class? Would Jose Reyes be a valid comparison for either of them?
Zach Ellenthal
Wilton, Conn.
I’d rather have Escobar, though there’s not a big difference between the two. They’re similar offensive players, with Escobar having more power and Andrus being a better basestealer. They’re both very good defenders, with Escobar maybe rating a slight edge. Andrus is nearly two years younger than Escobar and they’ve both made it to Double-A at this point, so Andrus may have more room for improvement. Then again, Escobar is still very young at 22.
When I put together my personal Top 50 Prospects list for the 2009 Prospect Handbook, I listed two shortstops ahead of Escobar (No. 27) and Andrus (who didn’t make my cut, and in retrospect I may regret that decision). I put the Rays’ Tim Beckham at No. 11 and the White Sox’ Gordon Beckham at No. 23. Tim Beckham is a shortstop in the traditional mold like Escobar and Andrus, and I think he’ll be more of an offensive threat than they will, especially in the power department. Gordon Beckham has more pop than any of them, though he’s more of an average defender than a plus with the glove.
I wouldn’t compare Andrus or Escobar to Reyes, who debuted in the majors the day before he turned 20. He has more dynamic speed and significantly more strength. If Andrus and Escobar continue to develop, you could dream that they could become the second coming of Reyes, but that’s not too realistic.

You just made the fucking list.

Did you order it from them
or take the cheap way out and use Amazon?

$20 vs almost $40...
Amazon all the way for me.
by NoNameOnCard on Jan 29, 2009 10:59 PM CST up reply actions
Just $20?
I may have to buy that, I assume its the best “prospect book” to buy?
by groundingout on Jan 30, 2009 1:57 AM CST up reply actions
and as a bonus...
I could buy it through Jamey’s site…
by groundingout on Jan 30, 2009 1:58 AM CST up reply actions
triple reply!!!!
I was gonna buy it right now but couldn’t open Jamey’s site. Anyone else having that problem?
by groundingout on Jan 30, 2009 2:01 AM CST up reply actions
I meant to do that, but I actually forgot...
As a consolation, you could click on one of my Amazon links and then go buy it.
On Amazon, it doesn’t ship until March 2, though, so you’ll have to wait a while or gratification.

Your site unsubscribed me again
Damn puters been conspiring against me lately…
Nah, noob.

Hmm.
The only involuntary un-subscriptions I’ve heard of have been Hotmail (seems to happen once a month to someone). Need me to re-subscribe you?
by Jamey Newberg on Jan 30, 2009 11:28 AM CST up reply actions
Yes, I'll email you my email
Reminder, this happened to me about a month ago on the same email address and you fixed it…
Nah, noob.

I'm very interested
in seeing Font, Weiland, and Ramirez do their thing this season.
I love the waves of talent.

Ross
Is another guy I’m anxious to hear more about. Seems like we know less about him than just about any of these other pitching prospects, but of the reports I’ve seen, some were fairly glowing.
"drawing walks is an overrated trait in my eyes."
"i do believe we could have 4 30 start pitchers in the rotation."
-- both these genius remarks brought to you by our resident guru, bigsteve
Yeah
His fellow prospects seem to be pretty impressed by him.

I hope he's not still rocking the dreaded inverted W like he was in those pics someone posted a while back.

I will love it
when there are top ranked pitchers in AAA who can’t break into the Rangers staff.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Van damn
Amazon isn’t shipping until Feb. 17. I don’t remember that much of a lag in previous years.
Nah, noob.
Masterson isn’t a prospect any more, after pitching 88 innings in the majors last year.
None of them have Bowden or Hagadone in their top 50s, though Manuel has Bard at #50.

That 2012 lineup
looks rather good…but I guess not all of the guys will make it to the bigs.
JEFF TEAGUE TIME.
Just guessing here
1b smoak
2b kinsler
3b young
ss andrus
lf borbon
cf that one prospect with the high ceiling
rf hamilton
c saltalamachia
sp felz

Where did Davis go?
if he was traded he should have brought back something in the rotation.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
He doesn't list a DH

This is our year.

“You bite your tongue.Chazz ReinholdChris Davis is not a kook! He is a brave and a decent man. He is a pioneer!”
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

Beltre
Im assuming Engel Beltre is that one prospect you mention. If so I think he would move to LF and Borbon would continue to man CF.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Another day, another reason to assume BA hearts Z and hates me.
Still no sign of my book.
I hate BA so much.
I’m gonna light their building on fire and then punch Aaron Fit in his stuff if it hasn’t come by Monday afternoon.

All this just for you not getting the book yet
I can’t wait to see what you do about Lemon not making the top 30.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
I didn't expect him to. Newberg has a lot of pull at BA.

And I’ll thank you kindly to address me as Mr. Newberg.

How about The Newberg?
Seems more in line with your sinister, destroy-Lemon-at-all-cost ways, don’t you think?

You have no idea how powerful The Newberg is.
He’s part of an ancient secret society known as the Pay Lawyers.
I don’t want to alarm you with how deep this society is engrained in our nations power structure, but I will say this: It. Goes. All. The. Way. To. The. Fucking. Top.

I have no doubt in my mind that The Newberg could walk up to the President, give him the secret Pay Lawyer handshake, and have Lemon killed within the hour.
In fact, I’m almost a little surprised Lemon is still alive at this point.
The Newberg’s hatred for Lemon is an all consuming fire that has driven him to the point of madness, and The Newberg’s capacity for nefarious deeds knows no bounds.
I think if Lemon ever gets a cup of coffee, The Newberg will be forced to act. He’ll make his calls and that plane coming from Oklahoma will end up being “struck by lightning”- – with extreme prejudice!!!
The 40 Trumps All!!!
I hate Michael Young.

most likely to go postal…
Does anyone get Deric McCamey’s book? I do not play fantasy baseball, nor do I plan to, but I’m thinking about getting the THT preview and one prospect book this year just for reading.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
McKamey
It’s pretty good, but really just another perspective. The great part about it is that it has consistency across all orgs, because it’s one author. Similar to John Sickels’ book. It’s a good thing to have for quick reference if you’re wanting to know how our guys compare objectively against similar guys from other orgs, though no prospect analyst is ever right even a large majority of the time. It’s just that McKamey’s background as a Bill James guy and a scout school graduate that make it that more interesting compared to how BA splits up all the orgs across the league to different guys.
Our long national nightmare is over.
Mine came today.
I know you all care, so I’ll keep the updates coming.
