Rangers Avoid Arbitration with Byrd

From TR Sullivan:

ARLINGTON -- The Rangers have settled all their arbitration cases after reaching an agreement with outfielder Marlon Byrd on Friday.

Byrd agreed to a base salary of $3.06 million. He was asking for $3.6 million in arbitration and the Rangers were offering $2.7 million. Byrd, who made $1.8 million in 2008, is eligible for free agency after the 2009 season.

The Rangers had already reached agreements with pitchers Brandon McCarthy, C.J. Wilson and Frank Francisco. They have not had an arbitration hearing with a player since Lee Stevens in 2000.

Byrd hit .298 with 10 home runs and 53 RBIs for the Rangers in 2008. In 122 games and 403 at-bats, he had 70 runs scored, 28 doubles, a .380 on-base percentage and a .462 slugging percentage.

He enters this season competing for playing time with left fielder David Murphy, center fielder Josh Hamilton and right fielder Nelson Cruz. Byrd is the most versatile of the four, having played 57 games in center, 39 in right and 31 in left in 2008

If Byrd is indeed our

4th OF’er….he’s a pretty damn good one to have. Is he a top 5 4th of’er in the league? Higher?

I'm having a hard time thinking of a better 4th OF

He may be the best in the AL in that role.

Byrd OPS+

is much better than Baldelli’s the last 2 years and Byrd’s actually played…

Is my assumption correct? This is my first try at using stats to back up an argument :)

Plus Byrd is a much better defender who can handle CF.

Pus he’s never had the Ebola virus or whatever the hell Baldelli had.

Plus his name isn’t Rocco.

When a mother agrees to name her son Rocco she's basically condemning him to a life of bulk purchases of hair gel and slapping women in public.

I don't think hes dropped off the radar as much..

as hes settled back into a normal spot for him. Hes gonna start in AAA and play everyday and be the first callup due to injury in the OF. Hes a nice player but the 4 OFers we have on the 25 man roster are better than he is.

I find it very amusing how some Sox fans think we’re in a position where we MUST trade one of our catchers. And, naturally, since they’re willing to do us a favor and throw a couple of lesser pitching prospects our way, we should be eternally grateful and get it done.

by Athos on Jan 30, 2009 8:30 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I noticed

how the consensus seems to be that since we have three catcher we OBVIOUSLY need to unload one of them, equal return be damned.

I guess using the same logic(they have TOO many starting pitchers) they should just give away Buch or the Yanks should give away Hughes.

mlbtraderumors commentor throws the knowledge down here
Catching is the least important positions on the field, in my opinion. Which explains why the Sox, with one of the best farm systems in baseball, have none. While the Rangers, with one of the poorest farm systems in baseball, have a wealth of catchers. I have been irritated all off-season by the Rangers thinking that their catchers are even REMOTELY worth a pitcher that projects to be an ace.

I am so pleased that Epstein told the Rangers to pound sand. I hope they enjoying playing >500 baseball with their three “star” pitchers. The Sox will be just fine with their “hole” at 8th or 9th in the lineup.

Pretty unique, eh?

That does look semi-interesting.

I’m always fearful about movies on a subject matter that I’m very passionate about, though. If they skimp on the details or do anything that wouldn’t happen within the system of rules I know to be in place, I won’t be able to enjoy it at all.

I’ll rent it rather than watching it in the theaters so that if they do unrealistic shit I can just turn it off rather than having to do the theater walkout thing, which I don’t like doing.

Like the asshole coach who seems to be belittling Sugar as he’s failing there seems rather unrealistic to me already. Shouting, “Welcome to America!” at a young LA kid in your charge who just got taken deep seems pretty assholish to me. Not that it wouldn’t happen, but it doesn’t seem like something that would happen. Maybe, though.

Stadium Shots

look to be from the Hooks stadium in Corpus….Could be wrong, but not many stadiums have a big-ass Causeway bridge in the background.

Looks like a rental to me. Other than having a few possibly interesting tidbits about how a LA kid has nothing but his arm to get him off the island and how the academies and minors work to a lesser extent, it looks like a baseball version of Goal…which means, not too good…

What's the rumpus?

McCarthy

Ok the last few days I have been thinking about our pitching staff. With the way JD has come out and said Harrison is almost assured of a spot in the rotation along with Feldman, since hes out of options, I wonder what will happen to BMac. Of the three he has a much higher upside and when healthy is just plain better than the other two. But I wonder if JD isn’t thinking alot further along than any of us have thought.

Through the 2008 season according to Cots McCarthy has 3.055 days of service time. Last season when he came off the 60 day there was a slight chance had he stayed down long enough he could have ended with under 3 years of time but that didn’t happen. So what I am thinking is if we sign Sheets if that will send McCarthy to OKC no matter what. If we send him down for approximately 70 days we would retain an extra full year of control over him. Plus it would give him time to ’prove" he can stay healthy. I think if hes proving anything it should be at the ML level but if thats the guise we have to send him down it could be good.

For instance have a starting rotation of Sheets, Millwood, Padilla, Harrison, and Feldman. Then around the 15th of June you could bring McCarthy up and keep him the rest of the season and instead of having him for only 2 more years after 2009 you would have him for 3 under team control. I think its worth a shot to keep our best players under team control as long as possible.

Great point...

I’m sure this has to be going through JD’s mind as well.

Nice catch.

Interesting

good thinking. I think Feldman’s option status guarantees him a spot on the active roster, but not necessarily the rotation, though. I do NOT think the team will keep McCarthy in AAA just because of the service time issue, however. He will only be sent down if they don’t need him on the big league club. Feldman can go in the bullpen, which has a need with the loss of Benoit.

I think they’ll let it play out in spring training and see what happens, but I just do not think the team would decide who goes into the rotation solely based on service time, though your idea may play a part in that decision.

It would only come into play if we sign Sheets

But I think that has to seriously be thought about if it comes down to Harrison and McCarthy and they both have good springs.

I don't think they'll keep McCarthy in AAA just for the service time, but

I do think that they are perfectly fine with him starting in AAA if Harrison and Feldman show up ready to go. Its their jobs to lose and outside of McCarthy flashing some of the best stuff he’s ever shown, I don’t think he’ll start the year in the Majors (if Sheets is here).

But thats the thing

McCarthy doesn’t have to flash the best stuff hes ever shown to be better than either Harrison or Feldman. So to keep a guy who is obviously better down would make no sense when both guys are ML ready.

You are selling Feldman and Harrison short

Harrison is a guy with a number 3 ceiling and a very good chance of reaching that ceiling. If McCarthy isn’t looking like the number 2 starter he probably projects to be, then he isn’t better than Harrison. Feldman looks like he could be a good LAIE at least which this team desperately needs given its consistent injury problems and under-performance issues. McCarthy’s ceiling is higher than Feldman’s, no doubt about that, but its idiotic to take Feldman out of the rotation right now. He’s 26 in a month, has spent the last few years mainly in the Majors, and was just recently moved to the rotation. Since he’s out of options, your only choice is to DFA him (the dumbest thing you could do with him) or move him back to the bullpen. Moving him back to the bullpen wastes his development from last year and hurts his chances of being effective when the the Rangers have an opening in their rotation.

Im all for keeping Feldman in the rotation

But I think you are a bit too high on Harrison personally. I agree his ceiling is a #3 but I don’t think he is as close to reaching that as you do. McCarthy, when healthy, has been a very nice starter the last couple years. The only problem is he hasn’t been healthy much. If he is then I don’t see any reason other than the service time think to keep him out of the rotation. If hes healthy in OKC then wouldn’t it stand to reason he would be healthy here? If so then I think you are doing a disservice to your team by keeping a more talented player down in the minors.

I don't think he's a great bet to reach that ceiling next season

But I do think that he is likely going to reach that ceiling within the next 2-3 years. Harrison is pretty much a finished product and only needs time to adjust to the Majors. There is no reason to play Harrison for a half season’s worth of starts last year just to have him start the season in the minors. Harrison is one of the prospects that you need to stick with when they make the Majors and not shuttle them back and forth.

I’m not real sure what you are asking in your last question though. If he’s healthy, then he’s healthy. I’m not like Josey and think that there is something mystically wrong with McCarthy where he can be healthy in the minors but his body won’t allow him to pitch in “The Show”. The thing is that I think he has dropped down on the depth chart because he has had such a hard time staying healthy these past 2 years. It sucks, but right now, Harrison is the better bet to stay healthy and remain effective than McCarthy and that is why I would go with him first ahead of McCarthy. McCarthy starting in the minors, showing that he is healthy and still has the stuff that made him a top prospect, isn’t a bad thing. Things will work themselves out to allow him to have another shot by the end of May.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

McCarthy

So you are agreeing that he is the better pitcher of the two but yet you would rather him be in the minors just because Harrison hasn’t been injured while in the majors yet?

Harrison has injury issues in the past. McCarthy is the better pitcher. McCarthys ceiling is higher than Harrisons and he has performed better in the majors when healthy. I don’t see any reason other than service time to keep Harrison instead of McCarthy.

I think McCarthy could be the better pitcher

Right now, I think Harrison is the better pitcher.

And do you know what Harrison’s injuries actually were? I believe one of his injuries was turf toe. I know, that’s pretty brutal. He is nowhere near the injury risk that McCarthy is and its ridiculous to even consider that as a possibility.

Why should Harrison be held back when he was showing that he was adjusting well to the Majors towards the end of last season while McCarthy was starting to finally get his mechanics on track? This isn’t like you’re talking about making sure the next Kameron Loe gets his shot at the rotation. Harrison is a legitimate talent. It is ridiculous IMO to stall Harrison’s development as a Major League starter so that you can hope McCarthy is healthy and ready to go. That is far from a guarantee and I doubt a few innings in ST are going to show that McCarthy is there.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Harrison had a shoulder injury IIRC

Which is why Beau Jones was included in the Tex deal at the last minute.

Thats where we disagree is about whos better. I don’t think Harrison is the better pitcher. I think as long as McCarthy is healthy he is the best young ML ready pitcher and I don’t think its even close. I agree with you I don’t want to stall Harrisons development but I don’t think him going down to OKC because a better pitcher gets kept in Arlington is a bad thing. .

Im coming around on the idea of starting McCarthy in OKC no matter how healthy he is but its only due to the team control issue. The long term impact of that is pretty exciting. Having him under control through 2012 instead of 2011 and his age 28 season instead of just his age 27 season makes a ton of sense.

My question to you. Should McCarthy be held back because of prior injury issues even if he is the better pitcher?

"as long as McCarthy is healthy "

That is a huge question mark, even with the added weight and new mechanics. I think he can be healthy, but there is a a lot of risk in just thinking that he is finally healthy and ready to go without actually pitching in a real game. And as I said before, a few ST innings isn’t the same as pitching in real games from the first inning to the 6th, 7th, 8th innings.

And McCarthy should be held back if Sheets is signed and Millwood/Padilla are still here. The service time is an additional bonus, but I would rather see Feldman and Harrison continue their development as ML starters and have McCarthy proving that he is ready to go in AAA. This isn’t a bad thing for McCarthy either. It lets him get some real game experience when he is healthy and not rehabbing from any injury for the first time pretty much since the beginning of 2007. The Rangers have already suffered 2 injuries to their pitching staff and ST hasn’t even started, so my guess is that McCarthy ends up spending maybe 4 weeks in the minors before he is needed for the ML team.

Harrison had some shoulder/arm injury, but it wasn’t major and it wasn’t the reason Beau Jones was added to the deal. From the Newberg Report:

When Texas and Atlanta zeroed in on the Teixeira trade last July, Rangers general manager Jon Daniels insisted that the Braves tack Jones onto the deal at the last minute when it was discovered that Harrison was suffering from turf toe.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Very interesting thought

I still think they groomed Feldman to be a starter, and not just for last year. He’s only 25, and like you said, out of options. It’s up to the squad to see what he, and Nippert for that matter, have.

I think casual fans might be upset to see the other side of the Danks deal sitting in Triple A come April, but it’s honestly a smart route to take, health wise. I hope they’ll seriously consider this. It all depends on their ST though.

Feldman

Its not like this logjam was unexpected. Before last season when they moved Feldman to a starter Hurley was expected to be ready during 2008, Harrison was expected to be ready no later than 2009, and we had McCarthy. Along with Padilla and Millwood there was going to be a logjam. I have a hard time believing they would take a guy who had never been a starter and try and convert him to a starter for one season when he would be out of options afterward. I think laqst season if anything he showed he can be a reliable starter who takes the mound every 5 days. He had flashes of being a really good starter. And as I have shown before last year Feldman was basically a 5 inning starter who was constantly put out there for a 6th inning. His numbers reflect that. I expect now that he has a full season as a starter under his belt he can expand his stamina and be a good 6-7 inning starter.

I may or may not have a Feldman autograph sitting in my room within my peripheral vision.
