Texas/Ohio St.
Did any of you Texas fans ever consider that Ohio St. might beat you? Of course not, you are too arrogant to ever think a Big 10 school could compete with you. USC did smash Ohio St., but remember, Wells didn't play. That's the Wells with around 100 rushing yards in the 1st half.
Typical UT moment of the 1st half is the joker UT fan with the Hook 'em Horns sign up while the Ohio St. kid is getting put on a stretcher. Did he think that would help cure him or what?

Is there a game tonight or something?
Does college football ever end? It’s almost as bad as the NBA, playoffs going on forever.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
i dont know if this is an endictment or an endorsement of the bcs
but i always find the regular season much more exciting. by the time bowl season rolls around i could care less. its a couple dozen exhibition games and one matchup between two behemoths that ive been rooting against all season.
i guess it doesnt help that i went to uta and therefore have no alma mater to support.
by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Jan 5, 2009 9:04 PM CST up reply actions
yes you could make that case
but to be honest if there was a playoff i doubt id be interested in the regular season at all, and i still probably wouldnt care much about the playoffs. but who knows, at least youd know there was something on the line

You're an idiot
You realize the hook em is a sign of respect our fans show whenever a player is injured.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
How?
Was the fan jumping up and down screaming like an idiot or were they simply standing there holding up the hook em? I was out of the room so I didn’t see and frankly don’t feel like rewinding right now. I can see how it may seem a bit odd but its not meant as anything other than respect for an injured player. Whether its a Ohio State player, and Aggy, a Sooner, we do it for all injured players
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
yeah
that’s the part that’s dumb.
why would anyone think that a hook em sign is a sign of respect? i get that the fan wasn’t showing disrespect but it’s still a dumbass custom.

We are playing like shit right now
Major props to tOSU, they are playing great but we aren’t exactly lighting it up either. We, just like all the other Big 12 schools, haven’t faced a running attack like tOSU at all this season. The Big 12 doesn’t run that away. We are a passing conference. Halftime is the time to make the necessary adjustments. I have faith Muschamp will make the ones needed and you will see a drastic change in the 2nd half.
I don’t know about all Longhorn fans but I certainly didn’t think this would be a cakewalk. I did figure we would come out a bit more motivated to prove people wrong that we should have been playing in the MNC game instead of the Fiesta Bowl but we didn’t. Why…I don’t know.
So far its been a good game and we are only down 3 at half. We get the ball to start the 2nd half and based on the last drive we may have figured how to move the ball on these guys. It should be at least tied right now but Colt had a very uncharacteristic fuckup right before half. Ohio State hasn’t scored a TD yet have they?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Did not see this coming at all.
Texas’ claim that they should be in the Nat’l Championship Game is losing steam.

Longhorn fans do that a lot to tell the difference between Ohio State and Oklahoma State, since they are both OSU and we play OSU every year and have played tOSU 3 of the last 4 years it has become necessary.
It's more like OSU

I thought the only way that tOSU stayed with UT is if they kept the score low. First half, obviously, mission accomplished. But I still think three touchdowns could win this game for Texas.

Last drive
Our drive right before the half was very promising. Had Colt not had a huge fuckup this would be tied or us up. I think we may have figured out we need to spread the field and start going deep on these guys
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Agreed.
You have to assume that your No. 1 (I honestly don’t know if it’s Shipley or Cosby) is going to be severely limited by Malcolm Jenkins, but if Davis can find a way to get the other one-on-one with a corner, tOSU won’t be able to keep up.
"Please. What the hell do you know about starting a sports-related website and then deciding to leave it to work on other things and then? How dare you, sir." -- Michael Schur, aka FireJoeMorgan's Ken Tremendous, to Will Leitch
Yep
Looks right now like Jenkins is mostly on Shipley and Quan is able to roam the middle of the field. I like us getting unique matchups like Chris O on a safety and such. Hopefully we will see less horizontal passing in the 2nd half and more vertical passing. Malcolm Williams could have a huge impact in the 2nd half if utilized correctly

It may have been
because Utah was a lot better than people were giving them credit and straight up punched Bama in the mouth.
The Mountain West isn’t a cakewalk like many think.
Gerald Laird: One Man, 5 Scoops.
you have to think
Urban Meyer gave the Utah coached some pointers before the game.
Even if that were true
It doesn’t change anything. Same with Andre Smith being out: if that OL is worth 15 points, then he should have won the Heisman, not Bradford.
I heard all week how Bama was disappointed with having the Sugar Bowl berth, and how it’s a shame that they went from #1 to having to play this little Utah team.
Utah didn’t trick play them to death ala Boise State. They humped Bama up and down the field for 4 quarters. That team was ready to play from the first play.
Everyone in the SEC/Auto qualifying conferences always points to 07 Hawaii when saying that they don’t deserve to have these “mid major” conferences in big games. Well I say bullshit. This is a prime example of the opposite.

I mean up 2 points which means a FG wins it and your D has been wore smooth ass out this 2nd half, sometimes not even getting in stances, and you are going to force Texas to run the hurry up? That doesn’t make much sense.

has a great defense. You can pooh-pooh on them all you want.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Yeah. i'M taking a big dump on them
and that so called great defense. Look what Penn St did on that so call great D. in the Rose Bowl
texas
was also seconds away from what would have been a embarrassing loss, ohio state is not a very good team. in the regular season they didn’t beat anybody. the big 10 sucked. it was generally percieved that texas was going to kick their ass. USC’s loss to oregon state was about on par to a loss to tech. usc has as much of a claim as either OU or UT at this point.
Whoa whoa whoa
Oregon State isn’t in Techs ballpark. So no the USC loss isn’t anywhere close to the Texas loss. And in case you didn’t know the Pac 10 is perhaps the worst conference in football. They’ve had some nice bowl efforts but in the regular season they were putrid. The two Washington schools combined, COMBINED for 1 win. So take that vaunted D with a grain of salt. they did give up 24 to penn State in the Rose Bowl and let Oregon State shred them pretty bad. They benefitted from playing a bunch of JV teams in conference. Not saying they aren’t good just not the best to ever walk this planet. I would say if the two teams played right now it would be close but UT would come away the victor perhaps in very similar fashion to how they beat tOSU.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
This is hilarious.
It’s just like the fans of every school before USC plays them.
UT is the only one who can talk trash about USC, but even the smartest UT fans know that there is a reason that game is one of the best ever, and it was the once in a lifetime performance of VY.
OU, Auburn, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio St., Penn St., Notre Dame (when they were good), Virginia Tech, etc. etc…
All these teams thought they would roll over the overrated Pac X SC team, and USC systematically rolled them all. The only teams that hang with SC are the Pac X teams because they know what to expect. If you don’t know what to expect, they always catch you by surprise.
@ Oregon St. is a hard game. That OSU team should’ve won that game @ Utah. Proves to me they are real similar teams. Utah could beat anyone in the country @ Utah, but give them a game @ a handful of other places and they would be 10 point dogs. Dem jus the facts.
@texas tech is a hard game too, they play very well at home. so don’t be so quick to dismiss them.
and its funny how usc fans so quickly dismiss the rose bowl vs texas as young having a once in a lifetime game.
if usc is that awesome then they should beat someone even when 1 player has an excellent game.

reggie bush wasnt the best RB on his college team
and remember when before the 05 rose bowl they spent a month talking about how USC was the best college team EVER?
so is the 05 texas team the best college team ever?

IMO
Absolutely. But I’ve only been watching football for 15 years, so my memory banks aren’t overflowing. 1995 Nebraska was incredible, 05 USC was top notch, and 01 Miami all stand out as stellar teams in my mind as well
"Holland didn’t make that kid question his swing, he made him question his career path"
I think you are both ignoring the giant elephant in the room
The 2001 Miami Hurricanes.. Can’t be matched.

some info
2001 hurricanes:
stats:
QB Ken Dorsey: 207/354 (58.47) for 3,029 yards (8.56) with 26 TD vs. 10 INT (2.82).
RB Clinton Portis: 240 carries for 1,304 yards (5.43) with 11 TD. 16 catches for 151 yards and 1 TD.
RB Frank Gore: 64 carries for 565 yards (8.83) with 5 TD. 1 catch for 14 yards and 0 TD.
RB Willis McGahee: 69 carries for 321 yards (4.65) with 3 TD.
WR Andre Johnson: 44 catches for 881 yards (20.02) and 12 TD.
TE Jeremy Shockey: 45 catches for 604 yards (13.42) and 8 TD.
WR Kevin Beard: 29 catches for 450 yards (15.52) and 2 TD.
K Todd Sievers: 22 FGM and 60 XPM.
players:
Among the numerous stars on the 2001 Miami squad were: quarterback Ken Dorsey; running backs Clinton Portis, Willis McGahee, Najeh Davenport, and Frank Gore; tight end Jeremy Shockey; wide receiver Andre Johnson, and Roscoe Parrish; tackles Bryant McKinnie and Joaquin Gonzalez; defensive linemen Jerome McDougle, William Joseph, and Vince Wilfork; linebackers Jonathan Vilma and D.J. Williams; and defensive backs Ed Reed, Mike Rumph, and Phillip Buchanon. Additional contributors included future stars Kellen Winslow II, Sean Taylor, Antrel Rolle, Vernon Carey, and Eric Winston. In all, an extraordinary 16 players from the 2001 Miami football team were drafted in the first-round of the NFL Draft (5 in the 2002 NFL Draft: Buchanon, McKinnie, Reed, Rumph, and Shockey; 4 in 2003: Johnson, Joseph, McDougle, and McGahee; 6 in 2004: Carey, Taylor, Vilma, Wilfork, Williams, and Winslow; and 1 in 2005: Rolle).
after looking at these 3 teams (95 cornhuskers, 01 hurricanes, 05 longhorns) and being a HUGE longhorn fan – i see no way that any of these teams can compete with the 01 hurricanes.
vince young probably had one of the best seasons ever imho (as a college player, vy >> tebow i think) – but the talent on the 01 hurricanes team is so much better than the 05 longhorns (overall talent) and the 1995 cornhuskers were kind of before my time (well right as i started watching college football fwiw)
damn, i have no clue how i forgot the 01 hurricanes…
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.
No doubt
that 2001 Miami team was absolutely loaded. Definitely my vote for best of all time (which in my world is the last 20 years or so since I wasn’t around to see the 60’s and 70’s).
"He will not coddle them. Nolan Ryan doesn’t coddle." - Jeff Passan
Go check the roster of that Rose Bowl squad
Its more than just Vince Young. The NFL is littered with guys from that squad. It was a great performance by VY but some would argue not his best. Perhaps his most clutch due to the magnitude but he had many other as impressive of performances.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I have degrees from both school...I love them both...
Was at the game…and know UT had a great roster. I bet UT moneyline because it was too good of odds…I know that UT wasn’t over matched in that game. They deserved to be there, obviously…
But it was hard to walk away from that game thinking UT was clearly the best team. In fact, no one did. That’s why it was such a classic game. It was 2 very even teams. It irrefutably took a couple of bone headed plays from USC, 1 missed 4th and 2, and a BRILLIANT game from VY to win a very close game. USC left more out there than Texas. Not able to argue that. It’s just the truth.
My point is that USC is never, ever, ever over matched. It is impossible to say they don’t belong, or to try and discredit them this, or any year. What Pete has done should never be questioned. When anyone starts to look at this USC team and it’s record and start to compare losses and wins, etc…it’s just flawed thinking.
The definition of ‘benefit of the doubt’ is what Pete Carroll has earned during the past half dozen years. They may not win every game, but they certainly can win every game.
Compare that to Utah, and when people say that they’d rather see this Utah team play the winner of Thursday’s game compared to USC, it just makes me scratch my head. I mean, can’t you imagine Utah being blown out? It’s not a stretch, right?
Now picture USC being blown out. It just never happens.
overmatched, when you hvae that much talent, boils down to coaching, and PC is up there with the best. i have no idea why he would leave for the NFL (should get a ton of $$ from USC if he ever decides he wants to go + im sure they see him as walking on water there lol)
that said, it wasnt that long ago that the same thing (never being overmatched) could be said for teams like notre dame, nebraksa, florida state, etc – a lot can change in 5-6 years…hell a lot can change year to year, imagine this USC team had sanchez been out for the year after the first few min of the first game and the next guy had sucked it up.
one injury can change * everything *
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.
The demise of the Pac 10 is greatly exaggerated
Sure, they might have the worst record vs. non-conference teams, but check out that opponents winning %. Toughest non-conference in the nation this year. Plus, keep in mind that each school only has 3 non-conference games. That’s one less game to beat up on teams like UTEP or the Citadel.
"He will not coddle them. Nolan Ryan doesn’t coddle." - Jeff Passan
Just ridiculous Hurler...
I know Texas didn’t play their best game tonight, but if they would have played like that against Utah they wouldn’t of scored 10 points.
They barely beat OSU, they have no better argument for a NC than Utah or USC right now, and TT getting thumped by Ole Miss didn’t help their cause either.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
It's not ridiculous
Texas beat OU. So if Florida beats OU. Then Texas should be considered as a possible co champion. How in the hell can you deny Texas as the best team in college football. Florida beat Oklahoma. Then you got Texas who beat Oklahoma.
Allow me to play devil's advocate:
…Because they barely sneaked by the second-best team in a crappy conference, a team they were heavily favored against?
"Please. What the hell do you know about starting a sports-related website and then deciding to leave it to work on other things and then? How dare you, sir." -- Michael Schur, aka FireJoeMorgan's Ken Tremendous, to Will Leitch
even if OU beats Florida
Texas should be considered as a national champion.
See.. it all boils down to Texas got screwed. Texas was the better team over Oklahoma this year.
See.. it all boils down to Texas got screwed. Texas was the better team over Oklahoma this year. And so what we didn’t over power Ohio St. and we barely won. Hell, the Georgia Bulldogs would have probably beat Ohio St really bad. Ohio St is not that good. the whole big ten conf sucks this year.
Penn St beat Oregon St. by 50...Oregon St. beat USC...
So Penn St. has to destroy USC….right?
Texas was supposed to play Utah
in the regular season, but Urban Meyer convinced them to back out before he left. That would have been instead of Texas playing UTEP. It would have settled a lot of things one way or another. If Utah had beat Texas they would have probably been in the NC game. If Texas had won then they would have had a better computer rankings and gone to the Big 12 title game instead of OU.
damn
that sucks that they backed out. UT would have won that game easily and been beating Florida for the National Championship.

Instead of arguing over stuff that no one knows the answer to
I really wish everyone would just agree on the obvious, that this is a sham of a system, and unite in outrage over the crooks lowlives who are keeping it in place.
The beauty of that is
we’ll eventually have resolutions to our questions. With college football we’ll never have an answer for who would beat whom or who is most deserving in the end.
by Brett Perryman on Jan 6, 2009 1:58 AM CST up reply actions
Wrong
Sometimes, we do have an answer for that. The problem is that the system completely disregards that answer and does its own thing. For example, the Longhorns could beat the Sooners on a neutral field but the BCS system still decides that OU should go to a national championship game despite identical records.

Like I said
I wish that people would focus on the real problem, that the system is a joke, rather than arguing about the individual decisions. I’m a Texas fan, so it’s not like it pains me to hear about their worthiness.

BCS Decided... ???
The Big XII (Big 6/Little 6) decided OU ranked ahead of UT, not the BCS. Had the Big XII tie breaker been a little cleaner (i.e. drop the lower ranked team from consideration in a 3-way tie) and Texas goes to the Big XII Title Game along with a higher ranking than OU just because the AP would have voted that way – it’s really a capricious group, those coaches – they would have ranked whichever the Big XII selected ahead of the other.
Either way, if OU beats Florida, the Big XII gets the #1 AND #2 ranked teams in the Nation with the possibility (remote) of a split giving both NC designations.
Too bad my RRaiders laid such a massive egg against Ole Miss…
If at first you don't succeed, try the outfield! -- Ed
Umm
The tie breaker in the three way tie was the BCS standing so how did the Big 12 decide OU ranked ahead of Texas?

not sure if this is what he meant
but the Big 12 decided on those tie-breaker rules and could have chosen a different way to break the tie.

Think UT is ahead of USC?
I’m not so sure.
I think there was an inflated UT and OU ranking because of the focus on the meaning of the last poll. I’d expect USC and Utah to make a large move.
so who would be an equal loss for texas (compared to oregon state) – kansas?
if texas had lost to kansas but beaten OU/TT should they have been in the NC conversation?
if tech had lost to baylor but beat OU/UT should they have been in the NC convo?
is there anyone out there who thinks oregon state > ole miss? i for one doubt it
floridas loss was to a better team than USC, as was texas/OU’s loss, as was alabama’s reg season loss, as was tech’s lone loss, etc.
whose loss was worse? USCs loss to oregon state or Penn St’s loss to iowa?

Only one game matters in any sport, the final one. You shouldn’t even watch the sport, regardless of if you like it, because that one game is all that matters.
