The Rumor That Would Not Die

The latest headline on MSNBC's online sports section:

Rangers may join Manny sweepstakes

The story?

The Texas Rangers are considering pursuing free agent slugger Manny Ramirez, Sports Illustrated reports.

Though GM Jon Daniels has said the team is not actively pursuing Ramirez, he did not rule out the possibility of doing so.

I'm flummoxed that this story is getting as much traction in the MSM as it is.

I think part of the Borbon deal...

…was that JD agreed not to publicly deny interest when Boras sends out rumors that the Rangers are after one of his f.a.s who isn’t getting as much interest as he’d like.

I just can't imagine

how Boras getting that rumor out there makes any kind of impact. Everyone in the industry knows where Hicks’ head is at right now. Not that Boras wouldn’t try, but the Dodgers, for example, are never going to buy it.

Perhaps,

Hicks is driving the rumor, he needs a big signing to fight his steadily declining ticket sales, I think season tickets sales probably have really tanked with all the nothingness of this off season, and with the general non-results of many seasons, and it’s not gone unnoticed. Millwood/Padilla

Keep Millwood under 180 IP, which he’ll probably do on his own, and decline club option on Padilla in ’10. They pay for Manny. Hicks fills seats, and pray the kids are ready to pitch.

I think if you intentionally hold Millwood

to below 180 innings so his 2010 won’t vest then you’re going to run afoul of the MLB Players Association in some way. At the very least future free agents are going to remember behavior such as that… and it’s already hard to get talented pitchers to want to come here.

there won’t be any Sheets out there next winter. I think the plan is more like:
1. see if the price for Sheets falls to a reasonable risk level and you can deal one of Milly or Padilla
2. keep exploring trade opportunities for young high upside pitchers now and through 2009.
3. If you’re in contention this summer, try to add a pitcher

Lackey

is the only one I’d consider, and he’s not nearly as good as Sheets. Duscherer is a prime candidate for regression, Bedard is a complete wild card, and not nearly as good as Sheets, Harden is even more of an injury risk than Sheets.

Add in the fact that those represent the cream of the crop, supply will be much more limited, so prices will rise. You’d be paying more with less of a chance for big payoff.

It actually makes a wee little bit of sense

Lets say you are Boras and Ramirez – you’ve overplayed your hand and overestimated the market for him. He’s blacklisted because of his antics in Boston, even though he proved himself in LA later. Their best strategy is probably to sign a 1 year deal, where Manny promises to behave and rack up great numbers for one last big contract. Where better to do that than Texas?

One year, $20 million. In Texas. Assuming he can stay healthy and focused, he’d put up giant numbers and prove that he’s still the best outfield hitter in baseball. If he somehow got Texas to the playoffs, he’d be anointed a miracle worker, even though Texas isn’t that far off now. If they still did badly, its Texas, what do you expect?

That is a no lose proposition for Manny and Boras.

As for the Rangers, Manny would certainly boost attendance somewhat and bring national attention to the club (like Sosa did a couple of years ago). He definitely would make the team better – though arguably not as much as signing Sheets or Wood would have. But if Boras can somehow offer something to Hicks, Nolan, and JD (future considerations in the draft, future FA’s, etc), maybe Hicks decides its worth a shot.

I don't think there's anyway in hell

the Rangers give out $20m per year contracts to anyone this year.

Manny pays for himself.

How...

We said the same thing about Arod. You have to have to pitching…you cannot outscore everyone. And unless Manny magically takes us to the playoffs then he will not pay for himself. Even contention is not enough for him to pay for himself. Look at Tampa, they still weren’t selling that many tickets until they hit the playoffs.

I sincerly doubt

Manny at $20M would pay for himself. I’m sure they’d see a ticket bump and maybe sell a few jersey shirts, but I doubt it’s enough to cover $20m

lol

a few jersey shirts? The amount of coverage the signing would get and then on into the regular season from the national media would be beneficial to the organization.

If it was that freakin simple

then why hasn’t just about any team jumped at the chance to get him for close to that?

not a large enough

latino market in Dallas ( like Los Angeles) and I think the state of economics is going to have a impact on merchandise sales as well. Manny in Texas is not a good fit. We are a year away from really needing to make any FA signing of merit. Ben Sheets if healthy makes complete sense and maybe the Chad Cordero. I am cool with not going after the big name players and seeing what we have on the farm!

logical explanation

too many people are surprised that texas would quit before the season even starts and assume that texas will make some effort do do something positive in the offseason – besides making the pitchers do cardio work.

texas usually waits until mid-july to throw in the towel.

at least this year, fans won’t be disappointed by a false assurance that the team is trying to win.

fortunately for texas, only 1.8M fans will show up, so they won’t be alienating very many people.

the team needed to do something to get butts in the seats, so manny would be a possibility. instead they have done nothing.

that said, manny would be a huge mistake as the team fails with or without him this season. he’s a cancer. you don;t want this guy w/n 100 yards of formidable young players.
