Will Carroll chat
kmshipley (austin, texas): Any thoughts where a guy like Bobby Abreu ends up? Solid obp guy, could Texas use him? Will Carroll: Abreu's kind of the guy who surprises me and maybe the guy most hurt by the market. A one year deal doesn't really help him the way it might with Dunn. Texas? No, they have enough OF guys and why spend when you have Nelson Cruz?

angry angry little man.
calm down o…
though abreu would put up huge numbers here i seriously doubt he’s in the cards unless we deal off part of our current OF cluster-[st]uck as a thrown in to a catcher deal… even then, doesn’t make much sense with the plan to maintain current payroll situation.

i cant believe he was so bad
it was supposed to be a lock he could at least be a good punt returner and he was terrible. the number of dropped footballs was insane.
didnt seem all that bad as a corner, but yeah he had to go.

Wow

What did the trade
with the Titans end up as?
Mitch Moreland - Rangers 2009 Minor League Player of the Year
I think......
we gave up a 4th rounder for a 5th essentially
Abreu's big problem is that he can no longer play the field.
He’s Kevin Reimer-awful out there.
Maybe he’d be okay at 1b, but more likely he’s a DH only at this point.
The 40 Trumps All!!!
He hasn't been the same since that hr derby.
"Sooner or later, prospects kill you, because you hang onto them." - Greggo, 11/22/2005
Factually correct yet meaningless relative to the HR derby
the statistical evidence about the HR derby effect is non existent.
the preceding post was a great success.
You are incorrect
The only two people ever to record 20+ homers in a round are Abreu and Hamilton. So what statistical evidence are you looking at?
"Sooner or later, prospects kill you, because you hang onto them." - Greggo, 11/22/2005
So you've limited the sample size down to 2.
Come on.
Do you know how many players who didn’t compete in the HR derby had larger declines than Hamilton did? Dozens.
Hamilton’s ops dropped 45 points. Pat Burrell’s dropped 250. Did Kinsler secretly compete in the derby? He dropped way off before getting injured. Player’s don’t duplicate their first halfs. Some are better, some are worse. Of course some of the derby competitors will be worse.
Justin Morneau won the thing and his ops increased 70 points. I could break down dozens of the 1st-3rd place winners in the HR derby that shows a perfectly standard distribution of second half improvement and loss if I really have to, but let me ask this:
How on earth would one hour of physical exertion and some batting practice style swings actually hurt a player for the rest of the year, yet alone years as with abreu. Hamilton takes homerun swings in batting practice before every game.
the preceding post was a great success.
I think I was just making an observation about one player
I don’t know why you want to debate that.

I've seen it seriously suggested many many times
And I only made any kind of lengthy post when he said I was wrong..
the preceding post was a great success.
I said you were wrong about your supposed
statistical evidence about people that do that well in HR derbys in one round. You have no evidence.
"Sooner or later, prospects kill you, because you hang onto them." - Greggo, 11/22/2005
Because you limited the one round to two players
For which no statistical argument can be made. Its 2 half seasons, you can’t take any kind of effect out of that. It can’t be proven it doesn’t happen, and 2 players certainly doesn’t prove it does.
Especially when one was actually nearly as good on the whole, and was very good in the immediate week after the HR derby. And the other’s first half was a fluky power burst.
And you declined to explain to me logically why it would have any long term effect.
So instead I noted that plenty of competitors have improved after, or non competitors have had large declines post all star, thus its silly to think there has to be a larger reason for bobby abreu to have declined other than the nature of baseball.
Not to mention my initial post was about the HR derby in general, I didnt say anything about one round.
the preceding post was a great success.
That's my point
the sample size is too small. So no legitimate statistical evidence exists.
"Sooner or later, prospects kill you, because you hang onto them." - Greggo, 11/22/2005
So why on earth are you suggesting the HR derby had an effect
Theres no evidence that Hamilton playing catcher wouldn’t make him hit 100 HRs.
Lets move him to catcher?
And again, trying to limit it to a sample size of 2 is stupid, thus why I increased the sample size to the rest of the HR derby competitors, which show no consistent decline post derby.
the preceding post was a great success.
I just said I'm hoping the same thing doesn't happen

"Sooner or later, prospects kill you, because you hang onto them." - Greggo, 11/22/2005
for the 3rd time
the initial post had nothing to do with 1 round of 20+ HRs, which you added later.
I simply said HR derby. and in the lack of available evidence I asked for any logical reasoning. there isn’t any.
the preceding post was a great success.
Of course it does..
What do you think he and Abreu have in common in regard to the HR derby???
"Sooner or later, prospects kill you, because you hang onto them." - Greggo, 11/22/2005
Because common sense would tell you there is no reason to differentiate
between someone who hit 16 homeruns in the first round and someone who hit 25. 9 extra swings effects someone months later? really?
Well before hamilton added another 20+ to the derby there has been an argument about decline after the HR derby, I was reacting to that sentiment.
this is completely absurd and I wish I had the willpower to walk away from such nonsense.
ignore all the previous posts: do you think the homerun derby effects its competitors for the rest of the season and possibly beyond?
If your answer is yes, I’ve given plenty of logic and evidence as to why I disagree. Give a reply to that or go away.
If your answer is no and you simply wanted to say you hope Hamilton does well, then you shouldn’t have said I was wrong and should have stopped posting long ago.
There are no other options.

A thought
If Nelson Cruz does really well in the first half of 09, maybe not his AAA #’s, but 25-30 HR, 80-90 RBI pace, while batting .280 to .300, what do we do with him going forward?
All I’ve read is that Hamilton is going to be shifted to RF eventually for Borbon.
Do we flip him mid-season? Keep him but move him to LF? Would Murphy become trade bait?
Pressing questions.
Gerald Laird: One Man, 5 Scoops.
Why would we keep Murphy if Cruz gives us that production?
He’ll never approach those numbers, and he’s left-handed in a left-heavy lineup
How are we left heavy?
We have Davis and Hambone as long term left handers.
I know this year we also have Blalock, but that’s still only three.

Answers:
1. Keep him as our long term RF. He’s still got 6 years of team control left, so if he’s really turned the corner and is gonna be good, we control what should be all of his prime years. Yay for us.
2. Hamilton would be a beastly beast in LF. His speed and arm would make him a plus-plus defender in left, imo. I’d love to see him in LF and Borbon in CF. Good lord that’d be a good defensive OF.
3. No, why flip him mid season if he’s a guy who can help us the next five years after this one? Those are the seasons we’re supposed to be contending, no? We should want good players to be here those years, right?
4. Moving Cruz to LF might not be so bad. The arm would definitely play there and it’s not like he’s a total plodder. I wouldn’t hate that. Him in LF with Hamilton in RF or vice versa. Wouldn’t really matter to me, I suppose.
5. Murphy should already be trade bait. Or DFA bait. But I’m the board’s resident pessimist when it comes to the Mosquito, so take that opinion for what it’s worth.

I agree with most of that
Hamilton and Cruz in the corners of the OF would be awesome, regardless of who is in LF and who is in RF.
I disagree with the Murphy part. I don’t know how many teams out there view Murphy highly enough to give us that good of a return on him. I was hoping the Rangers could work something out with Tampa Bay, but that didn’t happen and isn’t likely to happen anymore with the Jackson/Joyce trade. If Cruz, Hamilton, and Borbon is our OF for 2010-2012, Murphy makes a great 4th OF. The goal is to be in contention for the playoffs and more during those years so I think we’re going to need those types of role players rather than try to sell them off for whatever we can get.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Just visualizing
An ongoing order of Borbon, Young, Kinsler, Hamilton, Cruz, Davis, (DH), ©, Andrus. With good 4th-5th OF’ers and a good UTIL INF and a solid 2nd C. Given any decent pitching rotation and pen, the ole’ sarge in me says “I’d go to war with that ….”

he's that damn good
And the best part is I think its a pretty good bet that we have those role players. Murphy for 4th OF, Golson/Boggs for 5th OF, Duran/Vallejo for IF UTIL, and someone out of Teagarden, Ramirez, Salty, and Pina for the back-up catcher. Hell, Vallejo might be converted into a Figgins type utility player which gives us better roster flexibility.

Golson, Boggs, etc. can all be good 4th OF'ers by then.
Or you could find one off the scrap heap.
I don’t see how Murphy should fit into our long term plans.

What makes you say that?
Career Minor League lines:
Murphy: .273/.343/.407/.750
Boggs: .257/.366/.456/.822
Golson: .265/.310/.406/.716
Boggs has shown better discipline and better power than Murphy did. I see no reason to suspect he’d be worse than Murphy with the bat in The Show, at least not significantly so.
Golson I can see. His plate discipline is pretty horrendous, and that’s a hard thing to expect him to suddenly get a grasp of at this point, though who knows if maybe the change of scenery will jump start something in him. He’s a truly special athlete and he’s still only 22 so there’s hope. That said, you’re probably right Murphy’s a better bet to be better with the bat. But Golson is also a plussy defender capable of playing a true CF, whereas the Mosquito is a COF and nothing more.

Golson has a chance
but I’m not betting on him being more than a speedy defensive sub. He’s got the potential to be better, but its tough to say anything more than that.
I’m looking at what Murphy has done in over a full season’s worth of playing time in the Majors. You are ignoring that pretty big part of his track record and putting more weight on Boggs having a more successful minor league career. Boggs has the better chance of taking a walk, but I also worry about the strikeout totals he has put up in the minors and the extremely low BAs. I don’t like projecting guys with Dunn like lines in the minors to be able to do the same thing in the Majors.

No, not really.
But I think he and Murphy are a lot more alike as hitters going forward than you seem to think with your “Murphy’s bat is much better” comment.
I think if things break right they’re both ~.800 ops outfielders over the long haul, which is right about 4th OF territory.
I think Murphy is the safer bet, but I think Boggs is the better defender and has more ceiling with the bat.
Neither is someone we should be making plans around.

Cruz
If he is doing good at the ASB then I think you have to look inot the possibility of trading him. Whether it be straight up for someone or as part of a package. With his past and age I don’t think the return on a straight up would be of fair value. But with his anticipated performance and team control left he would be a very nice piece of a package for a really good player. I don’t know who we’d target but it could be someone very good. Including him may keep you from including a young pitcher or player with tremendous upside but whos a couple years away.
As for why I don’t think hes in our long term plans. Well for one in a couple years he is going to be in his early 30s which generally means he will start declining. So even though hes under team control he may not be good enough to keep. I could see him being non tendered in a couple years. And he doesn’t strike me as a very good LF candidate. Just doesn’t pass the eyeball test to me. He has a cannon of an arm but I don’t think, especially in TBiA he would make a very good LFer. And I don’t want hamilton over there either. So to me you have to trade Cruz when his value is at its highest. That could very well be right now although I think its probably ok to risk seeing what he can do in the regular season before pulling the trigger unless overwhelmed with an offer. if he falters then hes gone. DFAd and good riddance, thanks for teasing us for so long. If he has progressed then you entertain offers at the deadline and if you aren’t happy you wait until next winter. One full season in the bigs mashing the ball may not completely erase the last couple years from peoples memories but it will do alot to alleviate the concerns about him being a AAAA player.

Rangers investigate Joe Crede
From http://hotstove.mlblogs.com:
The Rangers are investigating the possibility of signing third baseman Joe Crede.
Crede has been dealing with back issues over the past two seasons and the Rangers have been studying his medical reports. A one-year deal might appeal to them.
The Rangers right now are looking at a lineup that includes Chris Davis at first, Hank Blalock at designated hitter and Travis Metcalf at third. The Rangers could still move Blalock to first, Davis to third and look for another bat to help out at DH.
But the Rangers want to upgrade defensively at third base and that’s why they are not interested in Ty Wiggington.
