OT - Cowboys release Pacman
The Adam "Pacman" Jones era in Dallas is over.
The Cowboys announced his release on Wednesday. The transaction will be made official on Feb. 9th, which is the first day that NFL clubs are allowed to make waiver requests.
The Pacman Era seemed to go off great didn't it? This must be the first step to reshaping the Cowboys I hope. Jerry must have been telling the truth when he said that some players would be thrown under the woodshed for their play this season.

Well, maybe they can find somebody who is ...
actually capable of fielding a punt cleanly and running north and south without coughing it up.
Good riddance.

I voted "no"
But I do not think its some earth shattering decision.
If your gonna release him fine, but PLEASE PLEASE don’t blame it on some lame ass “possible other violence?!?” bullshit excuse.
Just say you screwed the pooch and now you are moving on.

so whats the real reason why they dropped him?
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

I don't understand
Why you would have a contrary opinion on this. He made no plays on either defense or ST.

He made no plays?
0? I saw him make plays.

Im with you
He made a lot of plays.
I could give a shit about kick returning, nobody should hold that against him or anybody.

I didn't.
He was, at best, exceedingly average. But I think “average” is being generous.
by brettgardner on Jan 7, 2009 8:52 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
You said he made 0 plays.
Did you mean that literally? I’m confused. Because his pass deflections prove otherwise. I don’t think he was good but he made some plays. And I don’t think he was cut because of his play on the field. I think he was cut because of his off the field issues and this new development about a second shooting.

If he had no off-field issues
do you think he would more likely be a cowboy now?

NFL free agents
Is Nnamdi Asomugha really gonna be a free agent? and can we afford him?

he was absolutely terrible as a kick returner
and just ok as a corner.
it was arguable if he was worth the trouble when it was assumed he was a great kick returner and quality corner.
the preceding post was a great success.

umm
until he got hurt statistically he was our best CB (granted newman was hurt, but still)

yep
people aren’t too objective when it comes to him. Even the main BTB bloggers know how valuable he was to this team, especially early in the season.

Because we don't need him anymore
We needed him the first half of last year when Newman got hurt and Jenkins/Stanback were green. The rookies have played well, and now we just don’t have a big need for Pacman right now.
by cstorm15 on Jan 7, 2009 7:59 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
i doubt that was the reason
With Henry likely to move to safety and Newman as injury prone as he is, I doubt taht the reason was because we dont need him. Think about it this way, if Newman happens to go down yet again during training camp, your top 3 corners are Jenkins, Scanderick, and Ball. Talent? Yes. But do I want to run those three out there as my top 3 corners next year. Hell no.

Last year we had incredible depth. Having Newman, Henry, Pacman, Jenkins, and Scandrick was a luxury. But going into last year, we didn’t know how Jenkins and Scandrick would develop. It was more important to add an experienced corner incase Jenkins and Scandrick didn’t develop. Now that we have Newman, Henry, Jenkins, and Scandrick, Pacman is expendible. Plus, the team should be able to find a fifth corner who can actually play special teams and can keep his nose clean. In short, Pacman is no longer worth the risk because he’s not an important part of the team.
As an aside, I doubt Henry moves to safety. He’s simply not a long term option at the position. He’ll start at corner until Jenkins takes the job from him for good.
by cstorm15 on Jan 7, 2009 9:57 PM CST up reply actions 1 recs
I completely agree
I think that Pacman was a depth move and an insurance option for the rookie CBs. But now he is much more expendable.
I do think that Henry has a future at Safety though. He is getting older, he is big, and maybe he is losing a step?
by lcspider4 on Jan 8, 2009 10:18 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Henry
Henry will be 33 next season and in the last year of his contract. How many years will Henry have left at safety, especially if he’s losing a step? I’m not sure it makes much sense to make Henry change positions, integrate him into the defensive gameplanning, and then let him go a year later.

Will he play another down in the NFL?

Al Davis will probably give him another chance.
I swear, if he can ever get his head right, he could be a pretty good defender.

Cowboys Defensive Backfield 2009
As it stands now:
Newman CB
Henry CB
Williams SS
Hamlin FS
Average to above average.
But, since Williams has a huge cap figure, and Henry has seen some reps at Safety and is a huge cover upgrade over Roy, what would this look like?
Newman CB
Jenkins/ Scandrick CB
Henry SS
Hamlin FS
Maybe above average backfield depending on the quality of that 2nd corner (even though Jenkins came along slowly and got hurt, dont forget his 1st round talent).
Pacman could hurt as at CB due to lack of depth, but if we gain another quality DB to shore up the depth, then good good riddance.
Now lets get rid of T.O.

in that scenario
Hamlin would move to SS. Henry would be the FS.

Darren Sharper is a free agent
Chris Gamble is as well, if Hamlin can play SS.

Oshiomogho Atogwe
From St Louis, free agent as well.. he’s a real good player nobody knows about. Also a FS, though.

I am ok with a couple of ballhawking FS
Even though we may give up a bit in run defense by not having a true SS and we may be a bit undersized at safety, I would gladly have that if we could put together a nice coverage team. I could be off base, but after watching the Linebacker Roy williams play coverage for 5 years, I may be out of the Safety loop
