BoSox adding Smoltz
MLB.com's Mark Bowman reports it, I saw it on MLBTradeRumors. Well... it'll be interesting to see what this does to their rotation (and pitching depth).

Ill be the first to mention he who shall not be named.
Bucholz please. How many pitchers do you need?
Granted, they need a rotation in 2010 too.

and smoltz is questionable returning from injury.
but im desperate =).
Anyway, as for the actual topic, I do think its a good gamble. The few innings he was able to pitch last year were good ones and the salary risk shouldn’t be that big of a deal to them.
Same goes for getting whats Baldelli.

I don't see how they don't trade buchholz
to us or someone else. You would hold back a prospect after hespent part of two seasons in the bigs. This sounds like something the rangers would do. Boston should give buchholz his shot or trade him.

the way see it they are just loading up on contingencies
wakefield is gonna be42/43. so will smoltz, who is coming off his bazillionth surgery and will also be in his early 40s. beckett isnt without his own injury concerns. daisuke’s obscene walk rates are lurking to deliver him a bad year. buchholz has hit some growing pains and apparently has make-up/character concerns. bowden has exactly 1 ML start to his credit.
Sure most teams would kill for their starting pitching options but aside from lester there isnt a guy on there without some concerns. I think this team feels like they know they are going to the postseason and want to take every precaution to ensure that if a few things go wrong they have a backup plan in place that till keep them from missing a beat.
by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Jan 7, 2009 11:15 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
when u look at their rotation, they are all aging with the exception of lester, so it could be wise to keep their young guys. At the same time, do they want to go through growing pains with a young starter or fill a big need at catcher.

This is what the Sox do to maintain pitching depth. Last year we had similar $ spent on Schilling and Bartolo Colon. It didn’t make Lester expendable coming into last year, and it doesn’t make Buchholz expendable this year.
He could still be traded, but If he is I think he’s “reserved” for a young, middle of the order hitter (I’m starting to wonder about Miggy Cabrera, who could become too expensive in Detroit, especially with that city’s economic base). If Theo thought Texas had enough on the table to land Buchholz, the deal would be done already.

Not straight up, but as the basis/centerpiece of a package.
I figured that most everyone was familiar with the Heyman piece about the Sox offer for Hanley, and that deal started with Buchholz + Ellsbury, so that you the line of thinking would be clear enough that I wouldn’t have to spell everything out. So let me try again:
The Red Sox are probably trying to acquire young, elite hitting talent, and they feel that Clay Buchholz is their best trade chip in this regard. Such a trade (hypothetical as it may be) would not be a straight up trade, but a deal of several young players/ prospects for a young, established star. It would probably be difficult for them to do this if they moved Buchholz for lesser talent.
With the Tigers being based in Detroit, where the entire economy (and likely the Tigers attendance) being hit by the problems with the auto industry, a large contract like Miggy might be one that an ownership that is already cutting payroll and forsees revenues falling, might be willing to move for young talent.
Is that clear?

I am assuming a Cabrera trade with involve a Lowell trade to match. So is Boston looking for a deal like Chris Davis and Salty for Buchholz and Lowell plus cash? If so, good luck trying to find someone to do that kind of deal. I don’t believe all the owners are so worried about the economy to significantly cut salary without getting more back.

Is dating (or formerly dating) a Penthouse pet a sign of make-up/ character concerns? I think his new girlfriend is some sort of reality TV model or somethng; does that show him making adjustments and improving, or sinking lower?
In all seriousness, though, he did look like he showed less than stellar make up after his first month of the 2008 season. At one point he was so rattled on the mound he kept throwing the ball to 1B because he just didn’t want to throw it home. That was kind of drastic, but he did start losing his composure easily when something went wrong.

To the contrary
the Red Sox and Yankees seem to have learned that really good pitching prospects are the ideal rotation depth. You can’t hide veterans in the minors, and in this day and age you really can’t hide more than one in the bullpen. Guys like Hughes and Buchholz and Bowden are perfect because you are free to move them up and down freely. Keep a guy in AAA for three months if necessary, then when an opening comes, stick him in there.
by Brett Perryman on Jan 7, 2009 11:21 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I understand
the flexibility the young pitchers can provide. I’m just not a big proponent of sending a young guy back and forth from the majors to the minors. In the case of a masterson, he’ll likely be in the pen and be able to spot start.

For a big budget team,
that’s just ideal, they can sign anyone they way, broken down or not, and then plug in guys who on some teams would be counted on to be 3rd or 4th starters.

possible red sox rotation
lester
Beckett (my old baseball card guide)
Matsuzaka
Wakefield
Penny
Smoltz
(younger possibilities)
Buchholz
Masterson
Bowden
I could see why they wouldn’t want to trade buch but I think they can easily trade him and still sign another starter to give them even more depth.
Btw…they are also close to signing baldelli.
Furthermore, it was stated that the red sox would rather have the draft picks instead of resigning Tek. Of course, I don’t know who else would be in the market for an aging C that can’t hit or play defense.

If he's a type A, you have to try and get the picks
Because if he’s somehow a type A, he’s still liable to go try and sign elsewhere.
As to wanting him back, that would depend upon how he’s performing and what the teams situation (and depth) at 3B is in 2014. The way things are looking right now however, he won’t be a type A, nor would I want him back.

Young will not be a type A
Look at his last couple of years and extrapolate how he will be performing when his contract is up. I think it is pretty reasonable to say that there is little chance he will be a type A.

He was one of the best offensive SS in the AL last year
As bad as people think his season was we could have had much much worse. I don’t know if he will or won’t be a type A in 5 years. To speculate is kinda crazy right now. But he isn’t so bad that you can definitively rule it out. FAs are grouped by category. I know SS and 2B are in one together and possibly 3B but im not 100% on that. If all he does is duplicate last year in the last two years before free agency it will be close.

We speculate all the time
If Young duplicates last year in the last two years of his contract, then yes, it will be close. I don’t think that will happen.
He has been on a decline since ‘05, and last year was his worst year since his first full season. I don’t think many would argue that he will be performing at last year’s level (which wasn’t great) for the duration of his contract.
As a fan I hope you are right.

Brilliant move
Reports are out that Smoltz is already throwing all five of his pitches in his bullpens and is already up over 90 with his fastball. Don’t know what the Braves were thinking. Smoltz is the one guy you make an exception for. He is the one guy you have to keep. Behind Hank Aaron, he is the greatest Brave ever.

I wouldn't say Buchholz will be necessarily trade bait now...
but I’d feel safe in saying one or more of Buchholz, Materson, Bard will be now. And I doubt it’s with us since Theo will try to milk someone while JD is trying the same. No match there unless one of them concedes and gives up the better value.
by slimshadty12 on Jan 8, 2009 4:08 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think there’s anyone out there for Theo to “milk.” His options for a C are pretty much Texas and AZ. The thing is that JD is running Texas and AZ is being run by… Josh Byrnes, who used to work for Theo.
I think instead of “milking” it’s a matter of finding common ground. The Sox FO has a set value on the players, and they won’t overpay. They have some catchers they can go into the season with and they will do that if they can’t find a trading partner who matches up.
That said, I don’t get how Masterson is untradeable, and the idea that Bowden is now unmoveable as well boggles my mind.

It looks more and more like nothing will happen
unless a third team is involved. If the Red Sox aren’t budging on giving up Buchholz, then there is no deal. The Rangers have had no interest in Bowden apparently multiple times and I don’t understand the Masterson love fest at all, he won’t get any deal clsoe to done. So it looks like Boston will have to settle for whatever scrub catchers they have.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

and with the East so close
Having an inferior backstop like Zaun sucking the life out of rallies in Fenway will not play. I think Spring Training brings the wakeup call to Boston’s FO and they become more flexible.
I have heard it offered on this site that Daniels has the upperhand in the negotiations, because even though it may hinder our guys developmentally somewhat, we can keep our catchers, stay around .500 against a weak AL West, and meet expectations that we will be ready to compete in ’10. (Daniels own assessment) The Red Sox are in a different ballpark expectations wise (sorry, poor pun). Also, they are in a tougher division to win and the wicked older step-brother has been doing whatever it takes to win.
This plays into Daniels hand, and I think he realizes this. he’s playing it exactly right.
