Thursday a.m. stuff
T.R. Sullivan writes that the Rangers are likely to look within the organization to replace Milton Bradley's bat. He says they weren't in on Pat Burrell, and were only interested in Gary Sheffield if the Tigers picked up the majority of his contract.
Sullivan also writes that the Rangers will be watching Chad Cordero throw this week.
And that's about it.

Q&A Re: Davis
Crazy or optimistic: Davis is pissed at himself that he didn’t hit over .300 in the majors last summer? I think it’s awesomely crazy. Man I love that dude.

Still cant figure out why they were even remotely interested in Sheffield

Ditto
Even if the Tigers paid 100 freakin’ percent of his salary that’s a bad idea.

Bat from within
I’m fine with that. I would rather sign several low cost/low risk pitchers than get 1-2 years of Pat Burrel or Bobby Abreu.

The 40 Trumps All!!!
So last Friday I’m at a bar. I take this guy home. He’s a little fat. Whatever, right? Plus, chubsters are so grateful, they usually try harder. Anyway, right in the middle of things, he’s sweating and grunting like a hairy rhino and I just start to hate myself. Really, really hate myself… So, without even thinking, I just head butt him right in the face. Bam. Clock him right between the eyes. Knock him out cold. So, that’s what I got. What you got going on?

How many years do we hear that players x and y are “in the best shape of their lives!” One of which seems to be Millwood, the other has been McCarthy, Wilkerson, whatever.

It's been a spring training staple story
since I’d hear it about the late ’60s Tigers when I was a kid.
It’s a throwaway story that is designed to burn column inches for sportswriters, so they can spend more time at the bar, I think.

if even one of those two guys come in healthy
it would be a huge boost to our bullpen. If both of them are productive, we have five legit late inning guys in place.
There is still a lot of offseason to go (despite what the calendar says) with so many big names still on the board. I think this team still has a couple of moves to make that can only be made when some more guys are off the board.

What about 2010
when the Rangers are suppose to compete for the division? Do they sign more retreads. Or would you rather go with Rupe, Madrigal and others this year so that they have experience for 2010.

by RangerMad on Jan 8, 2009 10:32 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Rupe?
Rupe has been around for a long time. But they biggest thing is, are you really concerned about there not being enough innings for our relievers? With the same exact rotation as last year currently in place and the only likely external rotation targets being rookies and injured veterans?
Unless this team somehow signs Lowe and Garland, I think our bullpen will have plenty of innings to distribute.
by clark on Jan 8, 2009 10:45 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
You go with whoever pitched best in 2009
You still try to sign some retreads since they end up being a low risk high reward signing each year.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Turnbow
Even if he’s healthy, he’s not that good. Valuable mid-inning guy who’s prone to BBs maybe, but if we’re pitching him in the late innings, our bullpen is going to be in as sad a shape as it was last year.
Did Jon Daniels downsize your old position at Dunking Donuts?
by lonestarJon on Jan 8, 2009 3:52 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Chard Cordero
Would be a pretty solid addition. He is definitely a low risk, high reward guy. He was a decent (albeit a little lucky based on tRA) reliever before he got hurt and probably wouldn’t cost that much. I think the same could be said for Turnbow, although he has been pretty unlucky some seasons.
I think adding the likes of Turnbow, Cordero, etc is a good way to build a bullpen. They don’t cost a lot of money. If they make the team, they won’t be blocking any integral young players, only the likes of WIllie Eyre, Josh Rupe, Kason Gabbard, Joaquin Benoit, or maybe Warner Madrigal. And, we have some injury concerns in our pen with Benoit/Wilson/Rupe, so the more depth, the better.
I think adding veterans with a high upside for the bullpen isn’t that big of a deal, unlike say adding a Pedro Astacio or Jason Jennings who takes away innings from one of our young starters.
I also saw that the Rangers are seriously interested in Ohman, according to Sullivan. I wouldn’t mind adding him, provided the deal isn’t prohibitively expensive. He has put up some decent seasons and would probably be an upgrade over say Kason Gabbard.

Lonestarball in Texas Monthly Bum Steer Awards?
On The Ticket yesterday morning, they said that Texas Monthly gave CJ Wilson a Bum Steer award and has quotes from Lonestarball.com re: blueglovelefty’s rant about the typical Texan (SUV-driving douchebag, etc.). Does that qualify as the first print reference for the blog?

Nice article over at Baseball Analysts
this morning that’s fairly balanced. The mindless cheerleaders will be happy plus they detail some of the major problems with this team.
They detail how good Bradley was last year, say JD should be on a short leash but also give him some love for the state of the minor league system.

Also, there is a website
that picks the Rangers to win the AL West next year.
http://baseballsavant.blogspot.com/
This is a decent website with the occasional nugget but since they picked the Rangers to win, I could see why the cheerleaders will go bonkers for it.
Scroll down a little bit where he talks about the AL.
He absolutely kicks the Angels in the nuts which I don’t understand. Yes, they lost Tex but they had an 11 game lead when they traded for him last year. GA is gone but it was probably time. Fuentes has replaced KRod and the Angels didn’t have a healthy Lackey until late May last year.
Pythagorus does suggest the Angels were very lucky to win 100 games last year (just like the Rangers were lucky to win 79 games) but it’s difficult for me to believe they’re not going to win at least 90 games in this division, with that pitching and that manager.

the think about the Angels
is that they are in the perfect position to wait for some of these veterans to fall into their lap. I could see them signing a decent bat (if not Manny, then Abreu) and an additional arm or two. Unlike most of the other teams shuffling through the bargain bin, they actually have money to spend, so I bet this seemingly shortening gap widens again before spring.
by clark on Jan 8, 2009 10:48 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I wonder if the Angels would go after Manny?
I don’t doubt Moreno’s willingness to win, spend money and market his team and ManRam would be a coup but I wonder how he gets along with the true alpha-male in the room (Vlad) who’s looking for an extension and also needs to DH quite a bit?
Could the Angels go after Dunn on a one-year deal instead?

Verducci Effect
Any believers in the Verducci Effect? Besides Feldman, did any young Ranger pitcher throw more that 30 innings in 2008 than they did in 2007? Including the minors.

In a way, yes
A decade of specifically looking for it has produced a sort of confirmation. However, you’d also think that acclimation by hitters (and observation by hitting coaches) may have an effect over time. As well as the pitchers’ own contribution or lack of contribution to wiser pitch selection to counter such scouting and preparation by opponents. Will be interesting to see a refined study of the effects of continuous conditioning (given the other variables still play a part).

I think the Verducci effect has to do more with injury risk than a sophmore slump type of performance.

Understood
The other factors mentioned are just my take as “add on”. I think the risk of injury is exacerbated by a jump in use (innings pitched), but also think that individual differences in susceptibility to injury are a bigger risk factor than utilization. That is, more depends on the specific physiology than on conditioning, lack of it, or overuse. But overuse (to me) is a strong #2.

However, if you want to see it, my advice would be that it’s probably either in the comments on uniwatchblog.com’s entry for today (don’t go so can’t vouch for that) or you could register at the sportslogos.net boards, which is where I saw them initially.
