Oklahoma and Florida play for the right to say "We only had one more loss than Utah!"
Predictions?
I'm going with 34-24 Florida.
I really don't know what else to say... I'm really bad at hitting the word minimum. So, how was everyone's January 8th?
Suzy Kolber: Joe, it's been a tough season for Jets fans. What does it mean to you now that the team is struggling?
Joe Namath: I wanna kiss you. I couldn't care less about the team struggling. What we know is we can improve. Chad Pennington, our quarterback, missed the first part of the season, and we struggled. We're looking to next season, we're looking to make a noise now and ... I wanna kiss you!
SK: Thanks Joe! I'll take that as a huge compliment ... [Namath in background: YEAH!!!!] Joe Namath, part of the four-decade team. We'll see these guys at halftime.

Maybe
I know the Gators D is very good but be that as it man the Sooners have a great O. The Gators keep saying the Sooners haven’t seen a D like theirs this year but on the flip side the Gators have not seen an offense like the Sooners all year.

Anyone bored of CFB by now?
I used to love it, but now we have the National Championship, excuse me, BCS championship game, on January fucking 8th?
Back in the olden the days, they played all the cool game on 1/1 with the night game being the highlight. Then they moved it to 1/2, and I was cool with that. You spent all of New Years day eating and watching football, but on the the second, you thought “cool, I’d like to watch a little more football.”
This year we have freaking Tulsa and Ball State playing January 5th? This thing is basically over expansion. “Oh, you guys like bowl games? Then 28 more bowl game should be 28 times better!”
Why can’t they go back to New Years Day, you know, the day nobody worked. Thursday night football is awesome at the beginning of the season when baseball was over and no NFL to look forward to. Now? not so much.
Oh, and for a prediction, that one team wins, the other loses, Utah is #1.
Nothing pithy here. Please move long.

That game was the greatest
And what day was it? New Years day. I spent New Year’s Eve and day in Deadwood SD. Watched the game in a basement cigar bar (Seth Bullock’s original jail was where they stored their cold beer outside). Sat on a nice leather couch by a fireplace, smoked a great cigar, drank beer and watched that game.

i was saying that to someone around new years, that when i was a kid it was a lot cooler because ALL the games were on the 1st and it was just a huge ass day of football then it was done.

It was a $5 entry...
…and 22 people got in. We didn’t do the points thing, just picked the winners. I’m leading, at 23-9, but my boss is right behind me. I have OU, she has FL. If FL wins, it goes to the tiebreaker, which had us predict the amount of points scored in the game. I picked 58, and she picked 38. So in order for me to win, OU has to win, or the combined score has to be 49 or more.

More important is when OU hit a pass down to the 10, and the refs called some BS hold and moved it back to the OU48. Thats 42 fricken yards.

Holding
I wouldn’t be suprised to see a ton of holding calls tonight from an ACC crew. For some reason the Big 12 refs forgot what holding was and let teams get away with tackling almost. In these bowl games it will be interesting to see if it gets called more which may affect OU way more than Florida

It'd be a tossup
OSU won their bowl game without their top 2 offensive stars. Both teams healthy? I dunno, it’d be a close game that probably wouldn’t solve anything.

so is oregon state the 2nd best team in either the sec or big 12? no

I could reasonably argue
that OSU is in the same class as Tech and Ole Miss.
Again though, USC’s loss isn’t what kept them out — it was a lack of marquee wins that the other teams had. Certainly UT has the best loss of that group, but beyond that it’s pretty much equal IMO.

good point on the lack of marquee wins (and truly that can be a lot placed on the pac 10 not having “top teams” like SEC and big XII) – so not really as much of a knock against uSC either

Oregon St...
is a pretty good team, but I can’t see why anyone would think that USC should be in the NC game over Utah when Utah beat the team that USC lost to.
The’re a great team with a great defense, but little to no case to be ahead of Utah in my bias opinion.

If the game ended with 43 seconds left, than Texas would have beaten Tech and been undefeated. USC would have an argument if they didn’t lose to a horrible Oregon State team. When you lose to a team that bad, you have no argument that you should be in the national title game.

Who cares at this point? Nobody will ever play the “we finished #2 and you finished #3 in the final AP poll” card. It doesn’t matter.
I’m not necessarily arguing that they deserved to be in the title game. I’m disagreeing that their loss is significantly worse than any of the others.
It wasn’t the loss that should disqualify them — it should be their relative lack of better wins.

Two championships...
…One Heisman, another final 3 finish in the Heisman voting, a chance to win a 3rd championship and a 2nd Heisman next year. If he comes back next year and the Gators get to a BCS game, there’s no question that he’d have to be considered the greatest college player ever. Again, you’ll always be able to find players with better stats, but very few players can compete with the completeness of his resume.
"Hello win column..."

What matters more than...
…championships? His winning smile and volunteer work? Give me a break – you might not like Tebow, but saying he’s the Jeter of college football just comes across as ignorant. I’m a Gator fan in a Longhorn/Sooner world here at LSB, so I understand I’m in the minority here, but I’ll enjoy the bragging rights and the appreciation for the guy that carried the Gators to this championship.
"Hello win column..."
by rangersfan34 on Jan 8, 2009 11:43 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
That's stupid.
He’s a very good player, but even very good players need a good team around them. Giving an individual all the credit for winning a championship “comes across as ignorant” as you so eloquently put it.
Why don’t you mention something about how he plays rather than what Florida accomplishes?
As for “bragging rights”? Whatever. Grow up man. I don’t give a shit-and-a-half about either Florida or OU, I’m just trying to be reasonable in the midst of your ridiculousness.
by brettgardner on Jan 8, 2009 11:47 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
For perspective, Tebow...
…is probably my fourth or fifth favorite player on this Gator team. Some of his hype drives me crazy, as he’s clearly not a sure-fire NFL star. Percy Harvin is the best player and will be the best pro. Brandon Spikes is a complete stud and will probably be an All-Pro several times in the NFL (not that that honor means much either)… With that all said, Tebow is still the glue. The guy simply knows what it takes to win and what it takes to get everyone around him to play better.
Call my statements ridiculous if you will, but I’ve got a full calendar year to enjoy this championship, and I fully intend to do that,
"Hello win column..."

Resume
I’ll give you the resume thing.
I have very little respect for Heisman voting…sorry, that will piss some off but I don’t have a high estimation of the honor. The first BCS championship I feel was more due to their defense and Leak than Tebow but, as you said, he can put it on his resume so people will always remember him for it.
If he comes back next year, fine, you can start talking about how great he is but, right now, I think that he is incredibly overrated.
And yes, Jeter/Tebow — Apples/Oranges but I feel the same about both. They are both the princesses of their respective media balls.

Perhaps we can agree to disagree?
I’ve got nothing against Oklahoma or any other program (other than FSU, USC and all of the other SEC teams), so I’m not trying to disrespect any one player or team (other than those just mentioned). To me, Harvin is the best PLAYER on the Gators, but Tebow means so much more to them in the big picture. He simply carried the team to this championship, both on the field and off. The guy defines winner, and in this case I think he lives up to the hype.

The thing about Tebow...
…is that he isn’t a great quarterback in terms of tools. He’s not a particularly great thrower, and he’s not a world-beater runner, but he does them well enough to make you prepare and adjust for them.
What strikes me more about Tebow that makes him so dangerous is that he makes such terrific decisions, and he makes them fast. He reads very well, which is why his two interceptions (both of which were pretty bad reads) were so shocking.
Tommie Frazier had better tools, but Tebow arguably plays the game better.

We're #2 we're #2...
I’m obviously realistic enough to know that the Utes weren’t going to be voted #1. However the fact that they got 16 first place votes is great. I’m loving all the love Utah is getting right now.
Of course I think they have a great argument for #1, but this has been the best season in Utah football history, which is saying something after the ‘04 season. I never could have dreamed that they would have done it again this soon. I’m just going to enjoy it, as I have all year, and not worry or bitch about all the “should’ve been #1 talk”.
GO UTES!

Congrats
Utah is doing some good work for the MWC. I was listening to EXPN radio (I was working out, so that’s all I had) and they mentioned that the MWC should be a part of the BCS. BYU’s solid (gag), Utah can hopefully keep this up, CSU’s down, AFA is always somwhat solid. If Wyoming’s new coach can do something that’s not craptacular, I can see the MWC scraping into the BCS.
Nothing pithy here. Please move long.

they wouldn't have a case
Utah has the ability to win a national title — they just didn’t met the requirements to do so. They’re not being barred from the ability to win though.
Also, FWIW, I think Utah is a very very good team capable of beating anyone in the country. I just don’t think they have a legal case (but I’m not a member of the LSB Lawyer’s Association either).

The counter argument will be
that it’s not possible for them or any school outside the Big 6 to meet the requirements. When you’ve had 5 undefeated teams in 10 years who had zero shot at winning a national title, it’s tough to say that every team has the ability to win a national title.
Muschamp seems like the kind of guy who used to beat up guys like Bob Stoops in high school.

You missed the point
The BCS rules do not in any way say a MWC team cannot win the title. If a MWC team can build its reputation up and it’s perceived strength of schedule well enough to get into the top 2, then it is no different from OU or Florida getting there.
Just because they haven’t been able to make it to #1 or #2 is not the BCS’ fault.

Ok, that's your opinion, cool with me.
It’s just that I’m sure that in most people’s opinion, Alabama would have beaten Utah on a neutral field also.
They didn’t lose one game, and they beat Alabama (who’s only loss at the time was against the eventual “National Champion” in thier conference title game) in a BCS bowl game.. I just don’t see any reason for them to not to be National Champs.

I think he is a good college qb
I told you, everything is pre- read, he knows where he’s going before the snap 80-90% of his throws, and most of those throws are 0-10 yards. He stares down his receivers, just look at the goal line interception he threw.. everyone in the building knew he was throwing left. I have never come away impressed from the few times I’ve watched him, at least not too the point where of a Heisman winner or top 5 pick.

Harrell is just a QB who happens to play at a school that has had system QB's.
Harrell reads defenses and makes NFL type throws, he has great pocket presence and moves in the pocket very well. Bradford either sits back comfortably or sprints out with the slightest bit of pressure, and other reasons I have mentioned above.

My opinion:
Harrell has great accuracy in the 10-20 yd range, as you mentioned. That’s a fantastic NFL trait. I’m not convinced that he always makes the best reads, he forces the ball at times, and he doesn’t have a cannon for an arm.
Take all that together, and I think the best-case scenario for him is a Chris Simms-type career (minus the injuries): a solid backup option who won’t embarrass you if he has to make a spot start here and there. The more realistic option, though, is a solid 3rd-stringer.
I also think you’re underselling Bradford, though I don’t think he’d be a wise choice at #1 either. He has very good accuracy, makes smart decisions more often than not, and has a legit arm.
I might not take him at 1, but if he slid down past 10 he’d be a steal.

The audible.
Am I the only one who can’t stand watching Bradford look to the sidelines on almost every play. Seems to me that he cannot read a defense and have the ability to change the play or think for himself. Harrell at least called many of his own plays and made the changes at the line. And yeah I realize he didn’t always make the right call, but he put up the numbers.

if you have two catchers and one calls his own pitches and the other one’s coach calls all the pitches, you cant say that without a doubt one players is a better game coach/calls better pitches than the other one

The coaches purposely do that
it’s not because Bradford can’t read defenses. The coaches in the booth can see it much quicker than he can, radio down to the sidelines, signal in to bradford and you go.
