More BCS thoughts

I went to the game last night, just like I went to last year's Fiesta Bowl and the OU NC game against LSU at the Sugar Bowl.  I have  officially been asked not to go to any more bowl games because the University is getting tired of losing.  It isn't a big sacrifice.  No one in my family wants to go again.  We've been Tiger bait in the Superdome and Gator bait at Dolphin Stadium.  It is possible to have a good time elsewhere than when the other team is playing at home.

Here are some random thoughts about the BCS:

1.  2 of the sites of the national championship are played in SEC home country, if not home fields.  2 are played in a Pac-10 venue allowing USC to claim national dominance in the comfort of their own home. Usually, the local  Pro football fans/ticket holders get rights to these games and attend to root on their school or to sell to other alums.  Last night the crowd was about 5 to 1 Gator.

2.  Jerry needs to get Jerry world as a BCS site for the NC so that at least 20% of the time a Big 12 team has a chance to win the championship at home.

3.  In the last 7 times OU has played for a national championship (5 fb, one basketball, one baseball), 5 have been played as basically a home game for the opponent.  OU is 1-4 in those games.

4.  Two things were different last night.  The crowd was hammered after a day of tailgating.  This was added to by the copious selling of beer during the first half up til the start of the third.  I saw 5 fights:  2 OU-FL but 3 Gator on Gator.  Ah, nothing like getting cocktailed and trying to prove who is more the Alpha male.

5. I won't watch the game on replay but could the first quarter have been any more fouled up?  The teams were tight, granted, but the refereeing was out of control.  They seemed scared and confused.

6.  I have had people talk smack and other send consoling messages but really, I am over it.  Here's why:  We lost.  Blame it on a lot of things but we couldn't stop Tebow at crunch time.  Hey, we lose sometimes.  What would have killed me was to not even get to play in the big game.  To not have the chance and to have my bowl denigrated to an exhibition would be the real pain.  We had our chance.  That's all you can ask.

7.  Life does go on.

say that if tebow comes back for his senior year and he has a similiar season, he is going to be considered one of the top five college football players of all time. Now I think that is the real argument!

as i stated in the other thread

is he THAT much better of a player than vince young was in college?

he had a lot more talent on his team than young did in 05

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

I am a Texas Tech fan and have watched college football for 40 years but

I believe Vince Young is far and away the greatest college football player, ever.

Tim Tebow could not carry VYoung’s jock.

Thank you.

For all the people that bash Vince in the pros, give him his props for college dominance.

Doesn't matter...

if Tebow comes back and wins another NC next year, that would be 3 in 4 years and many would say he should go down as the best college football player ever.

I know...

but he did play a lot on that team. Whenever they got into the red zone Urban put him in.

I’m not saying I agree that he would be the best college football player ever, I’m just telling you what many others are going to say about he guy.

Also consider the team Vince put away in that game, the previous “greatest team ever” … spare me.

I think even Chase will not strongly disagree

that the BYU teams with their future-NFL QB’s had a period of domination over NCAA teams in general.

A forgotten, but important shift, in the College game.
The running game took a backseat to the pro-passing style for many years. It changed the college game from grinder to sidewinder.

My knowledge of college football

pre 2000 is extremely limited. But i’m gonna guess that team didn’t have 17 eventual 1st round picks, with most of those going on to be NFL starters, at least.

Mine is limited as well

but from looking at the stats and players, Penn State probably had one of the greatest offenses of all time

Best College Teams

USC ’72 (Charle Young, Anthony Davis, Lynn Swann, Skip Thomas)

USC ‘79 – (Charles White & Marcus Allen RB’s – Ronnie Lott as a DB, Munoz T)

Oklahoma ’85 (Bosworth in his prime, Keith Jackson at TE)

Miami ’87 (A few ’90s Dallas Cowboys on this team)

Penn State ’94 (these boys blew out Ohio State 63-14)

USC ’04

Texas ’05

Eh...

I won’t argue that they were one of the better teams in CFB history, but I just can’t see a case where they were the best. ‘95 Nebraska, ’94 PSU, and I think even ’05 Texas all have to be in the argument (if nothing else because they beat the team that the media heralded as the ’best team ever’). Before that, however, I simply know nothing about college football.

the starting situation

Tebow came in the game when they were in the redzone and pretty much scored everytime. It was exactly like the Jones/Barber thing last year, and it wasn’t just in the redzone, everytime they needed 2-3 yards on 3rd down he was brought in so i’d count that

a short yardage qb

not really something mvp worthy.
you could probably put a tight end in on short yardage and take the snap and get 2-3yds

he might not have started (as a freshman)

but he played in a deserves somecredit for being on that team. If Tebow comes back and Florida wins the NC then you have to give credit due where it is deserved. I am not a fan of Florida or anything, but the guy passes well, doesnt throw INT and he is a physical runner. VY isnt the physical runner that Tebow is that is for sure.

Home Field

If the crowd was 5 to 1 Gator, that’s the fault of OU’s fans for not supporting their team. If the BCS computers are going to give you at shot at the national championship, at least go to the game.

I’m convinced there were more UT fans at the 2006 Rose Bowl than USC fans, or at the very worst it was basically even.

Really?

You expect all of OU to be able to afford driving/flying over there?

Maybe I didn't make myself clear, Darrell

The University received 16,000 seats. Not all season ticket holders were allowed to buy tickets, as the entire allotment sold out. Florida got the same number. The remaining tickets were largely in the hands of Dolphin season ticket holders who were given the opportunity to buy the tickets because of their rights in the venue.

They did not sell these to OU fans. They either kept them or sold/gave them to other Florida people, most likely associated with the University of Florida. That resulted in the disparity.

by Plano Fan on Jan 10, 2009 4:03 PM CST reply actions

re:

I understand how the ticket allocations work. They worked the same way for the Rose Bowl. UT got 22,000 for the 2006 Rose Bowl, and then about 30,000 UT fans bought tickets in the secondary market.

by Darrell McKown on Jan 10, 2009 4:39 PM CST up reply actions

But...

Rose Bowl isn’t an NFL venue with personal seat licenses (Such as what the new Cowboys stadium will have) which allows people in the area rights to be buy tickets for all events in the stadium. This is how a disproportionate amount of Florida fans were able to get seats compared to Oklahoma fans. When a large portion of the stadium can be bought by Dolphin fans that likely were also Florida fans, or had a friend willing to reimburse the Dolphin season ticket holder for the ticket, that meant less tickets for OU fans to buy in the secondary market to begin with.

by rangers85 on Jan 10, 2009 4:58 PM CST up reply actions

However....

The tickets that didn’t go to USC or Texas went to the Tournament of Roses members, sponsors (just like this year), local residents with annual tickets options, and a very few tickets to the general public, all sold before the teams were known. I suspect there about as high a portion of those people who were tied to USC as there was with Florida this year.

I bought my tickets to the Rose Bowl from USC alumni, who simply decided to cash out went the going price for tickets got as high as it did (I believe that game remains the most expensive college ticket in history). A friend of mine who is a Florida grad bought his tickets this year from a ticket broker, and he paid less than half what I paid for the Rose Bowl. I don’t it’s accurate to say that it was easier for a UT fan to get a Rose Bowl ticket than it was for an OU fan to get a ticket this year.

by Darrell McKown on Jan 10, 2009 6:26 PM CST up reply actions

From what I've read, it will come down to three bowls

Cotton(D/FW), Peach(Atlanta), and the Capital One bowl(Orlando). I don’t think their is anyway SEC country get’s another BCS.. so between that and the new stadium, Cotton Bowl has a great chance.
