What Ron wants for Christmas.
It is not his two front teeth. He would like...
A veteran starting pitcher, a right-handed hitter and a left-handed relief specialist top manager Ron Washington's offseason wish list for the Rangers.
Ron. How did Kris Benson work out?
"The only one of those who is experienced is McCarthy," Washington said. "It's not that our young kids can't do the job. They did a great job this year. But there's that old baseball axiom you never know what will happen the second time around.
I do agree with this.
"I just want a right-handed bat that's consistent," Washington said. "He doesn't have to be a guy who hits 25-30 home runs, but just a right-handed bat that can hit and drive in runs. Someone who can help us against left-handers. It would be nice if he can play first base and the outfield.
But please, no Marlon Byrd.

Sounds like a shot at Cruz

Maybe Andruw too….
Can’t really argue with what he’s asking for though.

Cruz got benched too much
Cruz, also, should have been hitting cleanup. Cruz is at around 460 ABs was benched questionably quite a bit by Wash this year and did not hit in the top of the order. How many ABs did that cost Cruz this season when he has been healthy all year except for a two weeks after that terrbile Oakland game? Contrast that with Kinsler, who has 550 ABs and missed most of a month. I like both players but Cruz could have been a 40 HR guy this year (33 so far) if he wasn’t screwed around with, and actually shown confidence in his ability. I don’t know what goes on behind the doors of the locker room, but Wash needs to get smart about our OF.
Who would the RH bat take ABs away from?? Borbon?? Do we think Borbon should be platooned or Murphy, and don’t we have Boggs that could platoon with Murphy? Also, who cares about his ability to play 1B. You give Davis a shot at the beginning of the year to turn things around and give Smoak a little more time in AAA, then if Davis can’t play consistent baseball, you call up Smoak. There is also the possibility of MaxRam being in the equation.
I think another bat would be nice (DH etc), but not at the expense of Borbon which I would assume Wash would find a way not to play him.

First base?! Umm, I’m pretty sure Smoak, Davis, and even MaxRam provide us plenty of roster options, and with those three we really don’t need to be clogging up another roster spot with a first baseman.
Good grief. I like Warsh, but sometimes I wonder if he wakes up in a new world every morning. And sometimes I feel like we know more about his 40 man roster and near-ready prospects than he does.

I don’t think hes asking for a starter at that position but a backup to Davis so he can sit him against LHP and who can play OF also to give him options

Link Fail
The Rangers aren’t expected to be spending tons of dough this off-season so folks like John Lackey and Ben Sheets are probably out of the picture. The rumor is that Doug Davis or Justin Duchscherer are possible targets for the rotation.
In the relief department, John Grabow or Joe Beimel may be what the team adds and the offensive help may come simply from re-signing Marlon Byrd.
by GregoryM on Oct 1, 2009 11:37 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd be interested in Duchscherer but for the fact that Galloway will write a column every five days on how dumb the club was for losing him
And somehow, it will be blamed on JD.

I would love to see Grabow here
I wanted to get him at the trade deadline. I think Billy Wagner could be had for cheap on a one-year deal. I bet he’d come if he were guaranteed a shot to win the closer role. Imagine a bullpen of Wagner as the closer, and FX2, Ceej, Grabow, and O’day as the set-up guys. That would be pretty salty.

Would take a lot of ego-swallowing to get Siege, Frankie, and D-Day
to split the 7th/8th amongt themselves.
Not saying it couldn’t happen, but there’d be grumbling. If it did work, that’s a bullpen full of sodium chloride though.

And Marlon Byrd, and probably David Eckstein.

When they were playing hard for him
it was easier to see a rationale for them keeping him. However, the team doesn’t look like it has had much fight in it since July.

It seems that he wants to put on his big boy panties lately
And take a bigger stake in roster construction and player development when they hit the bigs, when he should just be managing the team from the locker room.
Or maybe I just get tired of thinking the exact opposite of him every time he mentions how he thinks one of our young players will turn out.
But I swear to you this, LSB, I will hit that man with a brick if he’s the reason Feliz never starts. A big brick, at that.

Great...
I really hope JD doesn’t sign some random veteran starting pitcher then. I can already see Wash bumping Hunter or Holland for another Benson/Ponson type. That would be just a great way to start next season wouldn’t it?
As far as I’m concerned the rotation next year is set. Millwood, Feldman, Hunter, Holland, McCarthy. I would start Feliz in OKC and stretch him out there, limit his innings for a month or two and then put him in the Rangers rotation at the first sign of struggle/injury among any of the starters. The only guy that can change that is Sheets, and I’m starting to wonder if he’s going to be an option next year for any team.
RH or LH doesn’t matter. The Rangers need another bat. He doesn’t have to be RH. He just needs to be able to work the count and get on base. If the Rangers could get Abreu (I don’t think it’s financially possible though) they would be silly to turn him down because he’s LH.

I think Feliz should start the year in the rotation
McCarthy could go to the pen as a swingman. I wouldn’t be opposed to your proposition with Feliz in OKC, but I don’t think there is any way you can send him down any more.
Also, I agree RH or LH doesn’t matter, but it does matter to me that they don’t take away ABs from Borbon.

I think Hurley is done after his injury
he won’t reach where he was, and that wasn’t that spectacular anyway. I’d give a shot to Poveda, Kiker, Beavan or Guitierrez before Hurley.
Harrison can go to the pen or get some work in AAA. He pretty much missed all this past year, and has been overtaken. I would give him a shot with an injury that is likely to occur.

by NothinG on Oct 1, 2009 3:27 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Really?
Poveda wasn’t all that impressive. He’s got a monster change and that’s about it. Kiker is the next coming of Ceej, if he can ever find the zone — not that it’s stopped Ceej from having a career.
If I’m not mistaken, the TJ takes about a year and a half to recover velocity. My guess is Hurley might be ready to contribute after the all star break next year, long before any of the guys you mentioned, with the possible exception of Kiker — only if he finds his control, and not as a starter. IMO.

he didn't have TJ surgery
here is a link to an early review of Hurley’s injury. Didn’t it later come out that he had a torn labrum.
Basically, I agree that those players aren’t a half a season away, my argument was more directed at the fact that Hurley still has a long road ahead and most likely won’t be the same pitch which imo wasn’t that great anyway. a 4 or 5 at best.

To me, this pretty clearly screams the two guys who have been rumored to be associated with the Rangers this offseason. Sheets and Bradley. Both can be had on the cheap, both are connected to the organization, both fit the profile of what Wash says he wants. Low risk (I know they are a health risk, but the financial cost given their potential will be very low), high reward.

JD & Players
If there is ANY opportunity that the players should be involved in, it is the possibility of taking MB back with the Cubs paying most of the salary.
IF there is interest in MB returning, it is only fair that MY, Ian, and whomever else had a players only meeting to discuss his comments this Spring and then deciding amongst themselves if THEY want him back in the clubhouse.
IF he hit like he did in 2008, I would give him another chance… but ONLY if the PLAYERS approve. ESPECIALLY since the Cubs would be on the hook for most of the money… allowing us to jettison him if things turn south at little cost.
