KLaw laying the smack down on Yankee fans
Drew Levy (New Jersey)
It seems that although Robinson Cano has had a fantastic year, he has gone largely unnoticed and untalked about. Why is that?Klaw (1:01 PM)
Midwest Bias. Seriously, any Yankee fan who complains about insufficient coverage of Yankee-doings should have his computer taken away.

Nice
That made my day.

In the interest of quicker games Ron should just tell the ump he's pulling the Feliz card and the ump should rule the inning over.--Sherman McCoy on Sept. 4, 2009
More Yankee-related snarkiness, though this is more of a shot at an idiotic question
Joe (Cinci)
If I had a vote I would vote for the Cy Young I’d vote for CC because when he came to the Yankees, he was under extreme pressure to do three things: 1) win games; 2) be the ace of the staff; 3) beat Boston.
Klaw (1:29 PM)
Well thank goodness you don’t have a vote, because you don’t have a good grasp of how to value pitcher performance.

I'm starting to really like Keith Law

I love the snarkiness
especially when someone asks a stupid question

They are actually quoting Joe Morgan
Supposedly Morgan said that in one of his chats…

Hi, Keith. Is this the year Edinson Volquez finally wins RoY?
Nice...a play on the FJM Joe Baiting from back in the day

Kind of an odd comment, considering
according to Fangraphs his Value has been
2007 $10.3M 2.5WAR
2008 $15.8M 3.5WAR
2009 $10.3M 2.3WAR
I dare say you cannot come up with 90 better OFs to push him into the 4th OF category. I’m not sure you can come up with 60 to push him to the ranks of 3rd OF. This year, in terms of Value, he was ranked 37th amongst OFs in all of baseball by Fangraphs.
Marlon Byrd is the most underrated Ranger I have seen in quite a while.

Well, combine the Warsh Lovefest with everyone else's feelings on him and the cumulative probably sums out to an even rating

Most folks feelings for him
are stupid and misplaced, and Wash is right about him, so the numbers say.

im curious to who he compares to at this point in his career and age. how did those said players perform the next three years?
Might give a basis of what you might expect?

Probably the best basis for that
is PECOTA, and I’ve let my BProspectus subscription lapse.

This.
Byrd in the next few years may be more of a 4th than a starter, but he’s done nothing as a Ranger to put him in that 4th OF category. The only think that makes him similar to a 4th OF is that he can fill in at any of the OF positions.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

he has been a solid starter the last 3 years
but I think KLaw was projecting what Byrd will be next year and moving forward. At least that is how I read it.

looking at fangraphs OF values
I see that Nelson Cruz is 19th in the majors for the year. If I was manager, I’d play him everyday.
Also interesting from that list is Nyjer Morgan is 8th. I certainly never would have guessed that.
"You can probably stick a fork in the Rangers' playoff chances for 2009." - AJM on 7/26 with the team 4.5 games out
where would Cruz be on the list if actually got 550 - 600 ABs?
like he should have this year.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
How many other "4th Outfielders" have posted an .800+ OPS
each season over the past 3 years and 1356 AB’s? When considering that the majority of those AB’s came as a CF, it seems even more foolish to refer to Byrd as a 4th outfielder. Calling somebody a 4th outfielder would imply that the player might be OK in limited spot duty, but exposed if given too much playing time. Three years of above average performance should have dispelled any questions about the caliber of play Byrd is capable of delivering.
Yep.
There is no doubt that Byrd is vastly underrated based on his “dirtying the form” in Philadelphia. Easily the most underrated Ranger to wear the uniform in a long time.
Byrd is playing everyday because he should be playing everyday. Cruz should be playing everyday. Hamilton, if healthy and producing should be playing. Its guys like Murphy that are your obvious fill in types.
Given the weak production from 1B/DH, playing time shouldn’t really be an issue for those guys.

Even Murphy should be playing a majority of the time
He should be playing everyday against RHP and I would give him occasional starts against LHP
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
This is true...
but not over guys like Cruz, Byrd, Hamilton (if healthy) , and Borbon imo.
The problem is that this team has too many OFers right now. That’s why they can’t afford to bring Byrd back given how much he will get on the FA market and the teams financial problems.

Yep, I expect Byrd will get
at least 3/$20M and probably more.
Interesting comment here
Victorino has gone from 6 (2008) to36 (2009) in CF /, how much stock can one put into that sort of difference?
Klaw (1:51 PM)
I think it’s good evidence that even a full year may be an insufficient sample for a defensive metric, and that maybe we should look at those numbers as guides rather than gospel.
Ive never been a fan of the defensive numbers because there is so many variables.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
They should never be used as the final word on a player
But like Keith Law says, they should be used as guides to telling us who is doing what defensively. Also, compare them with the scouting reports. If both say the same thing, you’re likely looking at a pretty good summary of that player’s defensive value.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

what if the defensive metrics say that a guy is one of the best fielders at his position in the ML
and the manager says he can’t be trusted in the OF, what then?

Well it depends
Does that manager also think that said player needs to hit more RBIs from the bottom of the lineup?

KLaw likes him some Smoak, a little surprised he didnt take a potshot at Davis in his answer
Pat (Long Island)
ETA on Smoak, and what kind of numbers can we expect from him next year? peak years???
Klaw (1:25 PM)
Early next year, maybe Opening Day. Peak years he’s a .300 hitter, high OBP, 35 home runs. Real impact guy.

No need for him
to pile on Davis. He definitely called it right.

I don't know about that
He had Davis in his top 100 prospects coming into 2008, and just said that he wasn’t one of the 5 best hitters in the A.L. West, not that he’d be worthless.

Good point, but I guess compared to the LSB Davis lovers (myself included) he got it right
Since I was convinced he and Hamilton were just a tad short of Ruth-Gehrig.

never traded any of the catchers and never traded Smoak or Davis. Interesting how that has played out so far.
He couldn't have traded Smoak...
until July of this year, no? And what would he have traded him for?

the only one of those that makes any sense...
…is catcher-trading.

He’s figuring it out.
