Saturday morning Rangers things
The idea of Angels v. Yanks in the ALCS doesn't make me happy.
Jim Reeves has a column on Rudy Jaramillo, who he says the Rangers need to bring back.
Jeff Wilson says the bidders for the Rangers have been pared down to three -- Chuck Greenberg, Dennis Gilbert, and Jim Crane.

Disagree.
I can root for the Red Sox without feeling sick to my stomach. Can’t say that about the Angels or the Yankmees.
But, as I’ve already predicted, the Angels are going all the way this year, so…

Bascik talked about him today
Said that he was always a great teammate, but after Bascik moved on, he talked to Teix again, and he stated “I gotta get the hell out of Texas”. Then after he was traded, Ceej had no good things to say about him. My (and Mike’s) guess was that something changed that last year.
Just FYI.

Reeves' Article & Byrd
So Reeves’ article starts out with all the emphasis that Rudy places on situational hitting. Then at the bottom of the first page, Reeves mentions how Rudy and Washington both preach working the count. Of course, we all know that these are areas where this team struggled (Reeves mentions this towards the end of the article). There is even an interesting quote from Ryan:
“As hitting coach, with situational hitting you have to get the hitters aware of it and what we’re trying to accomplish, and then doing it for the benefit of the team… If our players don’t make that transition to situational hitting when it comes up, then it’s something you have to evaluate on the players.”
Given how big of an impact resigning Byrd would have on this team, I wondered how he relates to working the count and situational hitting. In ’09 Byrd only saw 3.59 pitches per plate appearance, the MLB average was 3.83. Byrd swung at 37% of first pitches (MLB average is 26%). Hardly seems like he was trying to work the count.
B-Ref has a section of stats called “Situational Hitting”. Below is a chart of some of the data found on Byrd’s page. Team rank requires at least 300 PA’s, this way pitchers, backups (Vizquel) and late call-ups (Borbon) will be excluded. “Base Runners” shows the percentage of base runners who scored while Byrd was at the plate. B-Ref notes that the base runners who score may not be RBI. “<2, 3B” shows the percentage of runners who score when there are less than two outs and a runner on 3B. “0, 2B” refers to the percentage of runners who advance when there are zero outs and a runner on 2B.

So, with respect to situational hitting, Byrd bested the MLB average for these categories, as well as was atop the leader board for the 2009 Rangers. Given Ryan’s quote, I am sure that this may be another reason as to why the Rangers are looking to bring back Byrd. I wonder what, if anything at all, Ryan had to say about players and working the count?

Cool data, thanks.
Though, the problem is can we reasonably expect Byrd to repeat what he did this year or in 2008? Byrd has outperformed expectations and I’m a bit afraid that Wash and the front office expect him to do it again. And I’m pretty sure they are overrating his defense.

That's not the problem.
I think it’s fine to expect him to put up a .340ish wOBA next year, but it’s most definitely not fine to expect anything more than that, and it’s not reasonable to expect stellar defense, and it’s not worth the money it would cost to resign him.
Even if you can have him for a reasonable deal, say 2 years and $10-12 million, that’s money I’d rather see spent elsewhere. I don’t personally have a problem with Byrd’s performance, I have a problem with the value his teammates and perhaps the people in the front office are putting on it.

The Angels have seemed to do very well v. the Yankees since Scioscia took the reins and getting the MF Yankees out of the post-season is my second priority (next to seeing my Dodgers bring it all home for the 5th time in my life).
That Angels team is starting to get the look of a team who is destined to win it all and an Angels/Dodgers WS would not suck..
