While Red Sox assistant GM Jed Hoyer still appears to be the front runner to become the Padres' next GM—although he may stay put in Boston, where he is well compensated—two other names beginning to surface are Dodgers assistant GM Kim Ng and Rangers assistant GM Thad Levine.

I'll vote for Kim, as she has been close before
This kinda seems NFL-ish, where you have to interview a few times before getting a gig. At least, I hope so.

Ng seems to have been jacked around a lot because she's a woman
By accounts I’ve seen she’s extremely qualified and more capable than many of the GMs and recent GMs in the game. I really hope she gets a gig this winter.

Are you sure she's a woman? :)

I don't like too much 'stache on a lady, but a nice hint of 'stache can actually be quite sexy as hell.
‘Specially if the chick’s homeless.
But that might just be me.
I have really specific tastes.

Where the hell you been?
Jail, finally, for punting all those babies?

No way. I only punt minority and/or immigrant babies.
Even if someone did catch me, I don’t even think it’s illegal.
At worst it’s probably a fine.

It'd be cool if she was hired
She definitely has the credentials. And SD definitely needs something unique about their organization to attract attention – she’d probably invigorate the large Asian community in SD as well.

They've got to be the most boring bad team in baseball, right?
The Nats have Strasburg and (probably) Harper on the way and a few other intriguing characters. The Pirates have McCutcheon there and Alvarez on the way. The Royals are in a bigger hole, probably, with Dumb and Dumber in charge, but they’ve got The Grink. San Diego has one very good hitter who isn’t very flashy and gets lost among the cloud of has beens, never was-es, and mediocre young guys.

Strasburg and Harper (or whoever they pick) arent on the field

Strasburg will next year and they have Zimm

They might have him next year
you never know how those things will turn out. They have Ryan Zimmerman and not much else. They don’t even have much in useful veteran trade chips. I’d take the Pads group over the Nats group at the ML level

Zimm is awesome
Dunn and Willlingham are two guys I would love to have here.
Beyond that, though, you’re right. The cupboard is pretty bare. It’s a shame the other ZImmerman sustained that horrible injury, he was brilliant during the few starts we saw.
I like steak.

Why?

Latos, Blanks and Bell are very nice pieces.
Overall I’d take the Nats ML roster too though.

Blanks is good
but they play him in the OF. Latos’a arm will blow up any day now. Bell his good but already like 32 or 33.

Blanks is pretty good.
Hank is 7 runs below a zombie replacement at first base. Do you realize how terrible that is? Zombie’s can’t think, they’re slow, and they’re often ejected from the game for eating opposing baserunners’ brains. - Ben quantifies Hank Blalock

Everth Cabrera
Exciting player with a bright future. If you haven’t seen this guy run the bases, think Borbon on fast forward.

I don't think his future's all that bright, pretty speed aside.
Hey, I love speedy dudes, too. I still count watching Joey Gathright going 1st to third in person as one of my favorite “Wow” moments.
But I’m afraid that Everth, much like Gathright, falls into the “Can’t steal first” category.
He does seem to be really good defensively from what I’ve seen of him, though.
Something Gathright never had.

Well, fangraphs now has him at -10.6 uzr/150, so maybe he's not as good as he looked.
But, you know, D Stats = Grain of salt, and all that jazz.

He walked plenty in the minors.
Probably has better on-base skills than Elvis and Borbon.
But doing some reading up on him, apparently it was thought he’d eventually move to 2B even before the Padres got ahold of him.

Aaaand looking at BR, he actually played 174 games at second in the minors to just 57 at short
So apparently the Padres are Michael Younging him.

.342 obp isn't shabby for a 22 year old rookie
But I think the biggest positive sign for Everth is that he has an 87 point spread in his batting avg and obp (Elvis was .329 obp with 62 pt spread). I think that is a really good indicator, especially for a young player with such limited upper minors experience.
