Which episode
does he apply the vinegar and water?
"I don't condone steroids or any other type of growth hormones or anything else, but I could care less, and, for the most part, I don't think the fans give a (bleep). The people that care about it are the people that probably don't like baseball," - Jim Leyland

OT: This reminds me
In Jack and Jill it always bothered me that they said Jack somehow healed himself with vinegar and brown paper (2nd stanza):
Up Jack got and home did trot
As fast as he could caper;
And went to bed to mend his head
With vinegar and brown paper.
So, I looked it up, and what do you know, you really can heal swelling and bruising with vinegar and brown paper:
For bruises, one method was to take six or seven sheets of brown paper and soak them in a saucepan containing vinegar. The vinegar was heated and allowed to simmer making sure the paper did not break up. The paper was then applied in layers over the affected area.
Other substances placed on brown paper included honey for sprains, and tar for pains in the chest.

Not that anyone else cared. But sometimes I look up some of those nonsense things in nursery rhymes, they all came from somewhere.

Very interesting
to hear Kinsler speak negatively about the Rangers “aw shucks”, hokey, family friendly marketing (Clip 3). In the clip Kinsler compared “Built for Fun” to the Angels’ marketing which is directed at baseball fans.
Finally, something I can side with Ian on…

yep agreed with this completely
the “built for fun” drove me crazy.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.

x
What drove me crazy were the effing kids that were in those ads. I got to the point where when the crazy girl screaming at me how “YOU HAVE TO COMMIT,” I would either pause the feed and skip to live after a few seconds, or mute it. I confess I want to murder those children.

I understand it from both sides.
From a players’ side, I can understand why he thinks it is silly to promote baseball as “a thing to do with the family,” since he most likely thinks that people should come out to watch baseball and enjoy seeing their team play.
But I also understand it from a Rangers perspective. You’ve got to get butts in the seats, and when the team is projected to at or below .500, you need to bring in casual fans with families.
Beyond that, it’s like AJM et al have complained about the fluff in the broadcasts: aimed at casual fans, because hardcore fans are already going to watch (or, in this case, buy a ticket).
What do tigers dream of when they take a little tiger snooze? Do they dream of mauling zebras, or Halle Berry in her Catwoman suit?

The really depressing thing
the marketing department’s strategy is going to recieve a shit-ton of credit for the increase in attendence. Get ready for another year of Disney-esque Rangers ads.

I doubt it. I think Nolan and the rest of the folks on the business side are smart enough to know that winning increases attendance.

Not The Case......
ncrangerfan and others,
Adam is right. I guess you could say I work on the fringes of the marketing department.
Now keep in mind I have been here for 27 years, when the Rangers have had increases in attendance, I have never heard anyone in the Rangers Marketing Department take credit for any increase in attendance. Never happened.
Signing Nolan Ryan, building a new ballpark and winning 3 division titles are what worked best to increase our attendance. This year, it wasn’t scoreboards or commercials, it was a ballclub winning 87 games. Now there were a couple of good ideas like $10 tickets and $5 parking for fireworks Fridays that worked, but overall….it was team that played well that made the difference at the gate and in the television ratings.
If you recall, long about the first week of September when things got a little more serious, “Built For Fun” went away….when went to “It’s September, This Is What We Play For”……..basic highlight driven spots, similar to the Angels “Fan Strong” ad campaign that I watched all year and Ian made reference to on his radio show.
Don’t expect another year of Disney-esque Rangers ads.
I have suggested to management that they take an approach more like the Angels….Not my call, but that is what I suggested….I have given them examples of what the Angels do during their games.
When I met with Nolan Ryan the first week he was the President….I told him that this was a sleeping giant…that we needed to win something…..play some ALCS games in our ballpark…..we need to give our area a WOW! game in our ballpark…a game, or series where the fans go WOW! look what the Rangers did. A WOW! game that gets us closer to a World Series in our ballpark
But no, nobody over here his jumping up and down and popping champagne…..we are happy that our ballclub made an improvement on the field and that will translate into more fans being excited about the 2010 season.
But again, I have never seen any Rangers Marketing Department celebrating an increase in attendance. The times I have seen the marketing department get excited is a big free agent signing, announcement of a new ballpark, etc.
Thanks
Chuck

You represent the Rangers very well.
And I love that you read this blog.
Let’s please make it clear to the new ownership candidates that Chuck Morgan and the Rangers are a package deal. You don’t get one without the other.

Doesn't he know when to stop digging the hole deeper?
What does he say this time?

I like how in the subject line
you open up by saying something negatively about Kinsler’s demeanor. Then you mention that you didn’t listen.

I was just guessing that whatever he said would dig the hole deeper
was I wrong?

Posts like these
make me realize that its really a bunch of crap when people say that the numbers are the only thing thats important to them when evaluating players. It seem IK is a little douchey, but his numbers have been pretty good (excellent, at times). So, who gives a crap whether he’s whiney or abrasive if he’s saberly sound.

Keep in mind though
That posts (commentary) on a blog can at times be pissing contests about “who is the better critic”. Even when good analysis is included, there can be nose to nose contests about who is right. Sometimes those contests lead to producing more information, sometimes they become increasingly rank criticism.
Don’t let the good info get lost in the ongoing debates and criticisms.

came across this
Anyone know Ian’s email address?
However, the Kleskoyan had more chance to put the ball in play, and since they had less strikeouts, they didn’t just trade a strikeout for another kind of out. Instead, they traded a guaranteed out (the strikeout) for a chance at getting a hit. Their batting average soared from .263 to .280. The Jedmonds did the reverse, dropping from .280 to .263.
And how about overall? The wOBA of the 5250 went from .345 to .344. The Kleskoyan increased from .340 to .354, while the Jedmonds dropped from .354 to .347. So, even though the Kleskoyan actually hit less HR, their lowering of strikeouts actually increased their overall production. And even though Jedmonds hit more HR, their increase in strikeouts lowered their overall production.
