Bud Selig tells Ken Rosenthal he doesn't have "any desire to increase the amount of replay — period."

Sigh
But frankly, I’m quite satisfied with the way things are.

And that about sums it up. If it might make baseball more profitable, he cares. If it only might make baseball better, he doesn’t. How much longer will we have to endure the reign of Selig?

I suppose that's the point

“Controversy” = interest. Interest = viewers. Viewers = money. Not that I think Selig has put this much thought into the topic.

I don’t believe the issue is instant replay but rather having good umpires. Why is Bucknor doing a playoff game when he’s one of the worst according to the players (link below)?

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

And yet another black eye for baseball.

Fuck ups that can determine games just shrugged off like it’s no big deal. So, Bud, you mean to tell me that a team plays a way-way-way-too-long regular season, and when they make the playoffs, they get screwed over on a horrible call that can completely change a game and have no review or recourse… which, in a shortened series, can greatly affect the outcome of the series and your whole season?

In the old days, it was a part of the game

You could see a call live or hear about it from your friend and there was controversy. Nothing was ever settled, the play just brewed discussion.

Now days with instant replay, international access to sports news, etc., all it does is cheapen a win here and there. You can’t debate anymore, there was either an unmistakably blown call or not.

Fair/foul calls very obviously should be reviewable; however, plays at first base are often too close to change a call on, imo, so I wouldn’t be bent out of shape if that remained unreviewable.

Not a fan

of instant replay in football. I don’t think it has improved the quality of the game, just made it slower.

I think the better answer is to instantly fire, or at the very least suspend guys like Cuzzi who screw the pooch that bad. Its not like he was miles away or out of position. He was right there, and they have added additional umps just to make calls like that. There is no way he shouldn’t be punished harshly.

the point should be

To get the call right to avoid screwing over teams. Suspending or punishing umps does nothing to prevent harm done to that particular team on that particular call. I can’t imagine a greater way to preserve the integrity of the game than to get the call RIGHT. Unlike football, where there are lots of close plays to review, I.e. Low throws, fumbles, catches on sidelines, there are far less close plays in baseball along the foul lines to judge, so it would not slow down the games much at all, especially compared to football. Moreover, even with replay, most 1 pm NFL games are ending right around 4 pm.

I think it's ridiculous to fire or suspend an umpire over one bad call.

I’m in favor of a rating sytem for umpites based on their body of work over the course of a season, but when it comes to any single call, there’s just too much to consider when trying to guage whether the umpire had a good view of the play, etc.

Watch that replay again.

Its amazing how he was in almost perfect position to make the call and still blow it.

My point had to do with how ridiculous it would be to fire or suspend an umpire over a single call.

Should a .300 hitter be fired because he struck out looking with the bases loaded and the game on the line? Or should a quality pitcher be fired because he surrendered a HR that cost his team the game?
