OT - Haircuts
I am doing some market research for a startup company in the hair salon industry. The focus is men and their haircut preferences, so I thought this is as good a place as any to get started. I will be doing a more professional survey (I don't think it will go over well if my only source is a Texas Rangers blog), but I may be able to work in my LSB findings. Here are the basic questions:
- How often do you get a haircut per month?
- Where do you go to get a haircut?
- How far is the salon/barber shop from your house?
- How much do you pay?
- Do you get any additional services (shampoo, massage, hot towel, etc)?
- How much do you tip?
- Do you prefer a male or female stylist/barber?
- Do you try to go to the same stylist/barber for each visit?
- Do you make an appointment or walk-in?
- What's the longest you would wait for service?
Age and race are factors that I need to collect, but I'm not going to ask you guys to provide that info unless you are comfortable with it - it would be helpful.

my answer
i just started cutting my own hair and getting my wife to clean up the back.
I hate driving a few miles to pay someone $15-20 that I could just as easily do at home myself (#5 all over).

Huh - me too (with the exception of having a wife)
I started cutting my own hair in college since I didn’t have any money. Since then I just like the convenience as I don’t feel like leaving work to do it, but when I’m really sick of my hair I just like to get it done. And: 36 white.
Actually, why I started cutting my hair is my college roommate and I went to a beauty school for haircuts and they did a really shitty job. There was pair of clippers at my house so we trimmed up the other’s hair. Roommate was pretty good at it so he started cutting friends’ hair for money, beer, food. I bought him a six pack for a haircut and after a couple weeks started bitching how he hadn’t cut my hair yet and demanded my beer back. We got in a fist fight in the kitchen, he took off and I tried cutting my own hair for the first time (while drunk) and it turned out horrible. It’s taken a while but I’m decent at it now (after 15 years of trying).

Seriously though, I haven’t gotten too much shit for it. Probably cause I look so damn sexy with it. That was my haircut place in Dallas, here in NYC I go to a different place but it’s about $60 too. You can’t find anything here in manhattan under $20 or if you can I would advice you not to go cause you’re probably going to walk out with a really bad haircut.

well I've done it a couple times..
I just don’t have the time to do it on a regular basis, a seperate trip and all.
This is how it goes down:
1) They roll up your pants and put your feet in a mini jacuzzi with warm water.
Soaking in warm water for ten minutes or so makes the nail much easier to cut and shape.
2) Then they trim your nails and remove the cuticles, maybe sand the bottom of your feet to remove callouses.
3) After that they buff your nails, not to make them shiny just to take away the dullness.
4) If you want a foot massage at that point you can have one for a little more. To me thats the best part.
5) If you’re someone who wears sandals a lot, it’s a good thing to do because gnarly toenails are kinda disgusting.
HH is that a sock in your puppet or are you happy to see me?

I wear sandals a ton
So I stole one of those wooden file things from some little hot who used to camp out at my place too often. It works, but not as good as the sander I used to use.

I get it cut
with a 3 blade, and I may go 2, or I may go 3 months between haircuts. At its longest I doubt it gets longer than 3 inches. Actually it rarely gets over 2 inches. Considering in the ‘70s it used to go halfway down my back, the extra length doesn’t bother me much.
I’m just not a fan of wasting time or money on something as inconsequential as haircuts.

Probably right at an inch per month, I'd guess.
So that probably means I usually cut it at about 2 months give or take.
Once it starts taking any significant amount of time to airdry in the morning, it starts bugging me enough to cut it again.

Your hair is less than 3 inches long, but you air dry it .. hypothetical — i bet you could change your oil in 15 mins, but you have the shop do it in 30 instead because, well, 15 minutes of your time is not worth the unskilled labor. Granted that it only takes 15-20 minutes on most cars, the difference is negligible, correct?

yes a "stylist" sometimes does all of that..
But usually they don’t want your hair cut the same day as a shoot, freshly cut hair doesn’t photograph as well, at least that’s what I was told. So ideally get your hair cut a few days before and yes longer hair because of the versatility but it really depends on what it’s for. If it was for mens fitness or something like that it doesn’t matter as much, if it were for a clothier it would matter more.

Okay.
1. How often do you get a haircut per month? Not every month. Maybe not every other month. Depends on how it was cut the last time.
2. Where do you go to get a haircut? Some 90 year old guy in Irving.
3. How far is the salon/barber shop from your house? About 10 miles I guess, but I have a lot of clients in Irving so it’s not like I go out of my way.
4. How much do you pay? Four dollars.
5. Do you get any additional services (shampoo, massage, hot towel, etc)? He’s afraid of the AIDS and doesn’t shave anymore. Plus he’s too old to have that thing near my neck. So no extra services, no.
6. How much do you tip? $11
7. Do you prefer a male or female stylist/barber? Well he’s the only guy in there. On the rare occasion I go somewhere else I don’t care if they’re male or female.
8. Do you try to go to the same stylist/barber for each visit? I try to go to that guy, yeah. He wears a fucking bolo tie.
9. Do you make an appointment or walk-in? Walk in.
10. What’s the longest you would wait for service? Five or ten minutes.

Sport clips always has ESPN on, which kind of annoys me. And then they try to talk about sports, but most of them don’t actually know anything about anything.

It depends on what you mean by the top?
If you’re thinning towards the hairline theres not much they can do for that besides grafting/transplants. If it’s in the crown or middle propecia one mg a day does wonders,
or rogaine which is applied topically, can be bought at the drug store and is relatively cheap.
I know about these things I used to have Nick Jonas hair, but sadly it’s thinned some, so I’ve been taking the propecia and it’s helped a lot.
