Pretty, ain't he?
We have some new WC qualified entries and the EPL is back in action this weekend. Thought I'd start a soccer thread.
Is Arsene Wenger admiring himself in the mirror right at this moment? Discuss ...

Hey Liam ...
gimme a link to that EPL round-up show when you find a good one tomorrow. I need to try watching that.
Do you use torrents?
Just search for “Match of the Day” on mininova @ around 6-7pm CST tomorrow and download the one that was uploaded on that day.
Torrent's out.
I don’t know if it’s kosher to post torrent links on here, but it’s below.
Hi, I'm Craig Bellamy
And I have no neck!

I was on youtube yesterday watching highlights
of the big Liverpool victory over AC Milan a few years ago, and boy has Rafa put on a few lbs since then.
Watched Chelsea v Aston Villa
I like to watch Aston Villa for some reason. They have this cohesive rugged style and big Brad in goal bombing long balls all game long. Freidel gave up a soft goal to Drogba but came up HUGE another 3/4 times to save Villa’s butt. Fun fun fun game to watch, and to root against Chelsea. Mission accomplished. I really like that Milner guy on Villa – he’s a beast. Terry’s reaction when the winning goal went in was priceless – hissy fit par excellence.
Then I started watching Arsenal, but they got up 2-0 real quick, so I switched over to root against Liverpool. Sunderland’s goal in the 1st half was one for the ages – caromed off a beach ball that had wandered out of the stands and onto the pitch. Now I’m just trying to will Liverpool to a loss as time ticks down in the 2nd half.
Tomorrow … Wigan goes dowwwn.
Aston Villa
I almost picked them as my team instead of Liverpool when I started following the EPL- they’re not a top side, but they are one of the more enjoyable ones in the next tier below the Big Four.
Probably would have saved myself a lot of heartache had I chosen them. Liverpool have a better chance to win trophies than Villa, but that also sets me up for more disappointment when they fall short. As for today’s match, it’s just pissing me off. Damn beach ball!

Would've gone in regardless of whether or not it touched the beachball.

Thanks Glen Johnson!
shroomer should have picked them
Much more sympathetic club, coach, and they’re where they are based on smarts not some silly sheikh deciding to blow his oil money on a soccer experiment.

Shroomer would've already quit watching soccer if that was the case.
Villa play an incredibly boring brand of soccer.
Oh dear, Liverpool
They miss Xabi Alonso.
I think Luke French has a lot of potential. TORP potential.-Dstar
They didn't have Gerrard or Torres today.
It was always going to be 0-0 or a win for Sunderland.
Yeah, but I think that ends any title aspirations
I don’t think Liverpool wants money from Spain or England for the Injuries though. Onyewu on the other hand.. He played like 10 minutes so far this year, and now they want compensation from the US? Tough shit.

Eh
This is what we do- play mediocre football from August until October/November, then when we’re pretty much out of the title race, play like gangbusters the rest of the season.
And yeah, when you’re missing your two world-class players, it’s a bit difficult to win…

Man City v Wigan - halftime
We sorta started dominating play after 20 mins or so, almost scored a few times, then our flat-footed D-men gave up a soft goal off an innocent looking buildup in stoppage time. gak
Again, we started the game with cement shoes – every first touch lousy. Lotsa passes wrong-footing their target-man. But they settled down and found some rhythm after a while. Bellamy’s out with a tight groin, so we kinda lack those hell-bent runs up and down the left touchline. I really was thinking we’d win this easy, but now I’ll take an equalizer and the draw point. Geez – can’t believe Wigan is ahead on the scoreboard.
Weird month for Wigan
Destroyed by Arsenal (and it looked like as much Wigan as Arsenal) then go beat Chelsea by two. Lose away to Hull, draw with Man City. I guess you can live with four points from that stretch if you’re Wigan, but a weird way to get them.

Pretty indicative of the difference between home/away in the EPL.
At the JJB – Beat Chelsea, draw City (deserved a win)
Away from the JJB – Massacred by Arsenal, lose to a terrible Hull side.
Yeah true, good point
All I hear commentators talk about is that winning your fair share of home games is the key to avoiding relegation.

Man City 1 - Wigan 1 - Final
Well, Petrov scored at 47 min to open up the 2nd half nicely. My stream went dead just as he wound up to shoot. But the audio cont’d, so I sussed out from the Italian commentors that he scored – but kept calm until the video kicked back in a minute later verifying my hunch. Then we almost scored like twice more and also Adebayor was semi-brought down in the box with no call – coulda gone our way – no huge complaint tho’ – besides SWP shoulda put the ball in the net off the rebound.
But then Pablo Zubaleto our left back got his 2nd yellow and was sent off. When he got his first yellow I thought he was a risk to leave on the field considering how many stupid wild flying tackles he throws down. My hunch was correct – got another dumb foul and now we’re down to 10 men. To top it off Adebayor started just standing around wincing, which effectively put us down to 9 men. But, class that we are, we pretty much played them even the rest of the match – even had a chance or two to win it. Adebayor was yanked for a new left back [Kompany’s debut – did well, hardly noticed him] and 2 more halfbacks eventually subbed in to help out. Given had to make a brilliant save to preserve the draw in the 89th minute, but we escape with the point. The next 3 games are all quite winnable so we’ll make our hay there after Robinho and Bellers return.
Adebayor is a dog. Yet, he coulda scored like 3 goals if a few bounces woulda gone his way. Guess that’s the bag he brings. Getting Bellamy and Robinho back should help things. Zubaleto has to learn when to take his chances better – or Hughes needs to learn you can’t trust him not to earn double yellows.
We coulda really made some noise in the standings had we won these last 2 games. I’ll remember this stretch if it’s tight at season’s end. Now we need to go 3-0 and get back up the table. Then we’ll go buy Frank Ribery. ha
x
Kompany played for City last year and was arguably one of your best players.
You can ask Z about this, but Adebayor’s retarded. When he’s on form (approximately 25% of the season), he’s right there with Drogba and Torres in terms of dominance. When he can’t be bothered (the remaining 75% of the season), he’s absolutely awful.
Ribery’s going to Madrid or Barca, I guarantee you this.
Okay
I thought we bought Kompany over the summer and he’s been hurt until now. doh! But this means he should mesh faster than I was counting on – besides, you say he was good last season which answers the quality question for me.
Yeah, Hughes sounded like he’s setting his sights on a nuts-and-bolts core guy come January – not a big flashy name like the British media is wildly associating with City daily. We could use another solid holding mid-fielder – if De Jong went down injured it would complicate things.
Kompany played as a holding mid most of last season.
The advantage with him is that you can slot him at CB or CDM and he won’t embarrass himself.
Looks like Kompany is sticking around

yeah - good news I spose
But if that article had come out 24 hours sooner Liam wouldn’t have had the opportunity to make me look like a doofus Yank bandwagoneer [which I’m NOT!] by pointing out he was one of our best players last season after I heralded his City debut against Wigan.
BTW, I’ve mulled this Wigan game over and … I’m ticked off. I demand at least 11 points over their next 5 matches – which includes an away tilt vs Liverpool. We play 6 Dec EPL games including Chelsea and Spurs, so we need to make hay before that brutal stretch. Depth – we haz it.
Well one thing
I’m not sure that Spurs are that great. They have some good players as they always do, but they have also had a pretty light schedule (not that it typically keeps them from sucking). They surprised Liverpool in August, but other than that, they seem pretty much on typical form. I wouldn’t really consider them part of a brutal stretch like I would any of the traditional big four, at least at this point. Maybe I’m underselling them.

Oh - and Adebayor ...
yeah, today he couldn’t be bothered. But still, his toe was just inches away from poking the ball in 2 or 3 times today. Guess that’s what you get with the dude.
RSC hasn’t been impressive so far. Tevez has his moments, but I think is forced to position himself too far away from the penbox to really maintain much danger.
Overall, I think today I saw the first signs of a franchise style of play developing. But it really only lasted from about the 20th minute to the 45th minute.
Adebayor is incredibly inefficient with his scoring chances
Like LiamP said, he has those days where he’s like that great golf shot, you get suckered in. And he could always gain maturity still, but he is just a very frustrating player and a total numskull. Saying Adebayor was really close to scoring three times but didn’t is kind of like commenting on the sun rising. Like you said, it’s what you get with him.

If you watch Liverpool vs Lyon tonight, keep an eye out for Pjanic
He’ll likely be the next talented youngster that Aulas sells for an insane amount of money.
Him or Lloris.
Real sans Ronaldo is beatable.
You see that little bitch slap Ronaldhino gave to Raul after the no goal? Funny. Good for Milan though, came out and had an awesome second half.
I think Luke French has a lot of potential. TORP potential.-Dstar
Benzema
They’re starting to get really impatient with him, and he would’ve been benched for Higuain had Higuain not picked up an injury during training.
Hope he’s starting to realize that he joined the wrong team.
Benzema
I was really surprised he left Lyon- he’s from there, and seemed like a good candidate to be a “lifer” with that club, though I know the French league tends to be a feeder to the big three leagues in Europe.
I’ve kinda been following Lyon the last couple years- Juninho is one of my favorite players, even though he’s no longer there- and while they do sell off a lot of talent, I’m very impressed by Aulas’ ability to consistently get top dollar for his players.

No way he was gonna be a lifer
Far too talented to stay in Ligue 1.
Aulas is a fucking wizard at transfers. What’s equally impressive is their ability to continue to win as they develop talent to fill what would seem like massive holes. In a couple of years, he’ll have sold Pjanic, Lloris, Bastos and more for massive sums of money and he’ll already have the next crop of young stars in there.
