It's still unbelievable how much crap LSB

gave MYoung this year.

Huh? During the season?

People bashed him all the time last year and before the season, but he didn’t get bashed much this season to my recollection.

Mostly just comments on his defense when he was making a lot of bad plays to eye and had 2x as bad a uzr as the next worst guy at 3b to back it up. Then eventually he started playing better at 3b too.

Habby B-Day mike, please play as well next year.

the preceding post was a great success.

Shepp

There was a game against the MF NYY’s in NYC this past May (?) where Young was playing 3B and had cued shot off the bat of Teixeira with some funky spin on it that went into the LF corner.

The GDT was all up his ass screaming what a bad 3B he was and this came at a time the Rangers were playing very well (they went 20-9 in May) and when Young was one of their best players. Remember how he wouldn’t let This Thing die when it staggered out of the gate in April?

It wasn’t just that GDT when they played the Yanks either – it was throughout the season and I guess it stemmed from how poorly he publicly treated JD last January.

Pretty sure you're misremembering, Roger.

Pretty sure this blog has been in almost unanimous support of Michael Young’s 132 OPS+. We complain about every little play. We bitched about when Feliz walked a guy; just the nature of the beast.

Michael Young, here is your due.

I did not expect you to post the 2nd highest OPS of your career at age 32. Because I did not expect this, I wished you to fail in order to affirm my expectation, and therefore, I begrudge you this apology.

Let's have some timeline fun.

Ken Rosenthal reports that the Rangers asked Young to move in December and was “absolutely livid.”

January 13, the trade request is made public.

January 15, he agrees to move.

So, it’s probably closer to a month and a half, not two days.

Don’t get me wrong: my thanks for him agreeing to move is sincere. It very much improved the ballclub.

But to put him on this pedestal is to forget that yeah, he complained for a month and a half and threatened to leave.

I love me some FOTF, but facts are facts.

In retrospect

That isn’t bad. It took me a little over a year to agree to a different assignment, and it turned out to be the best move I ever made. Of course all timelines are shorter in MLB, the career duration being so much shorter.

You just act like he's a player who is known for whining

Picture yourself in a business, having just won salesman of the year in a particular department. Then, for the sake of the company, your boss tells you to move to another department… can you really not empathize for MY on this one at all?

I don’t care if he didn’t deserve the GG, I’m sure MY worked his ass off to get to the point he did, and he was frustrated that he needed to immediately learn a new position.

by BuckyB on Oct 19, 2009 7:13 PM CDT up reply actions

No, I can't

Because the team just made an 80 million dollar investment in him. If he wasn’t considered the ultimate team player, the team captain, the face of the franchise, blah blah blah, you could probably knock off at least 15 million dollars from that and he might not have even signed an extension here. That is what the Rangers bought. What did the Rangers get? A guy that wouldn’t move a few feet to his left because he clearly knew better than the team. Not just that he got upset which I can understand, but he demanded a trade. He wanted to get out of town rather than do what the team thought was best. Sorry, but I don’t empathize with that. If I’m getting 80 million dollars, I don’t care if they ask me to pitch, I’ll agree to it.

And lets not pretend like it was just some frustration about moving to a new position. The frustration was only released a month after he was initially told to move. He couldn’t calm down after a month+ and then went to the press bitching about how he shouldn’t have to move.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Hmmmmm...

You’ve got to think that he plays until at least 39, which would give him six more seasons. Assume he plays, oh, 140 games a year for those six years; that’s 840 games. Let’s say he averages 3.5 ABs per game (assuming he gets moved down in the order later in his career) — that’s 2,940 more career ABs for the FOTF.

To get the 938 hits he’d need for 2,600, he’d need to hit .319 in those 2,940 ABs.

So I’ll take the under, slightly. That said, if he plays until 40, 41, 42, then obviously my math is moot.

What do tigers dream of when they take a little tiger snooze? Do they dream of mauling zebras, or Halle Berry in her Catwoman suit?

by ghtd36 on Oct 19, 2009 12:50 PM CDT up reply actions

I take the under

there are many injuries that seem to linger as players get older as well. He would need to make it to his 40’s. It’s possible , although I doubt he plays into his 40’s with already declining range, and a likely continuing lack of defensive flexibility. He doesn’t suit the DH role. We’ll see. I’m rooting for it though

Michael Young is not going to the HOF.

He’s been a wonderful player but he’s played for mostly shitty teams with terrible managment and ownership for his entire career.

He’d need to keep steady production until he’s 40 and then have his team make several big splashes in a few different post-seasons while playing a starring role.

Just don’t see it.

But as the HoF actually stand… 200 hit seasons, .300 batting averages, 6+ all star appearences, a gold glove, still seen as a leader……..

He would need to do a well above average maintaining into his late 30s and the rangers would have to do some damage in the playoffs. I’ll go with the ~10% a couple others listed.

Possibly Jenkins

He won 93 games as a Ranger, spent six seasons here (second only to his tenure as a Cub) and still holds the single-season club record for wins. It’s odd that more people seem to think of him as a Red Sock than as a Ranger, since he only played there for two seasons.

Perry was a Ranger for 2.5 seasons, winning 42 games, while Gossage was only here for one season.

Fergie was traded after 1975 to Bosox for Juan Beniquez.

Not really sure why he was dealt (because he won 42 games for mediocre teams in two years) to Boston but he was notorious partier and was busted for possession of hash in 1980.

Stranger that the Rangers would pick him back up in ’78 for a song (and he was really good in ’78).

He threw strikes and worked fast.

Now saying they all perform at the level we think they’re capable of performing, that’s going to cost quite a bit. I hope we can shell out for all four and keep them into their early 30’s (Elvis may be the only exception; depending on how Profar does).

The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

Gotta admit

Dude has a pretty generic name

The first time I ever heard the guy introduced at the Ballpark, I was like, ‘Who the hell…’

Yesterday was David Murphys 28th birthday. Of course nobody knows who he is as he is the most underappreciated player on the team.

Also

one of the most mediocre.

Yalp.

Hank is 7 runs below a zombie replacement at first base. Do you realize how terrible that is? Zombie’s can’t think, they’re slow, and they’re often ejected from the game for eating opposing baserunners’ brains. - Ben quantifies Hank Blalock

Not mediocre

Right about average

2009 David Murphy .269 .338 .447

2009 AL LF .267 .338 .442

You almost have to be a grownup

To really enjoy Michael Young and not envy him. And in the way of celebrations, isn’t he a new Dad again? And how many (excuse yourself) do you know who would put so much back into the community -evidently MLB thinks he does the most.

Total contribution, I’d assume. No idea how it might stack up percentagewise.
