OT. A's prospect Jeremy Barfield tweeted that the

“Fox Trax is the dumbest thing since ESPN’s win probability a couple years back”. I told him that the Fox Trax was the same thing as MLB’s Pitch FX and that Fangraphs had a better win probability sheet with a link to it and he said

all that crap is for people who never played. Same reason why they just invented the OPS stat. Just so wannabees stay busy

Hank is 7 runs below a zombie replacement at first base. Do you realize how terrible that is? Zombie’s can’t think, they’re slow, and they’re often ejected from the game for eating opposing baserunners’ brains. - Ben quantifies Hank Blalock

Nope. He pitched on the 20th.

98 heat to 80 yakker and back again. I’m beginning to think Scheppers > Feliz.

The only thing I dislike about Scheppers thus far is that he works up in the zone. So far, it works for him.

A quick look at his Pitch F/X profile

His curveball doesn’t have nearly the break that Gutierrez has (-6 vertical for Schepper vs -10 vertical fro Gutierrez), but he throws it a lot harder (82 MPH for Scheppers vs 75 MPH for Gutierrez). The Rangers have two of the more interesting pitchers in the AFL.

Gutierrez’s pitch would remind me of Sele a little. It is difficult for umps to call those strikes.. The catcher can catch the ball barely off the ground but where it crossed the front of the plate it would be a strike. The umps won’t call it that way though.

Where do you expect Tanner Scheppers to be assigned to start 2010? What about Robbie Ross?
Jon Daniels
  (1:08 PM)

A little early to say on Scheppers, but he’s impressed in a short time in Instructs. The ball comes out of his hand like it does with very few, and he’s got two legit power breaking balls. He could be a quick mover in the system, but let’s see how the AFL and spring training treat him before we announce where he’s going specifically… Ross, consistent with how we’ve handled the other HS pitchers we’ve signed recently, is probably on target to see Hickory this year.

Hickory is probably too low. They might want him to just skip Bakersfield all together. Maybe Frisco it is.

by Dirk Diggler on Oct 23, 2009 9:25 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I could see Hickory or Bakersfield to start if they want to bring him along slowly as they stretch him out.

Gradually increasing his workload would be easier at those levels I’d think.

But, saying that, Frisco’d be my bet, too.

As long as they keep him as a starter I could care less where we start him, though.

Good lord am I pumped about this sexy little broseph.

But to say Joba hasn’t transitioned that well to a starter isn’t entirely true. He had a decent year this past year by most standards but compared to his 2008 as a starter it was a big dropoff. How he bounces back next year will tell more on how he will be long term.

Feliz, Holland, Scheppers, Perez

Need to be starters. Perez, I would think would be another full year away, but Scheppers could get the call this year. In a year or two our rotation could be filled with TORP or close to it plus a whole slew of other pitchers in our system that can be used for the bullpen. Our rotation is gonna get crowded fast. I can’t remember this type of pitching talent in our system…EVER! This is getting me excited. I think i’ll explode before opening day next year if Scheppers and Gutierrez continue to pitch this well and Perez has a great showing in the VWL. Literally EXPLODE!

People have told me, “oh this is just like DVD, these guys aren’t going to pan out.” Not like it at all. The prospect gurus were cautioning excitement on DVD saying they weren’t all TORPs like we thought. Now, the prospect gurus are as excited, if not moreso, than we are about our guys.

This potential is just sick.

yep

in the past, i’ve been used to prospects being hyped inside the organization, but when you look outside the organization, those prospects aren’t looked on as highly. It is completely different this time around, and we have way more depth in pitching than, i would venture to say, we’ve EVER had.

Harrison back healthy is really good news

It will allow us to either keep Feliz in OKC for a little while to manage his innings or put him in the bullpen next year from the get go.

I doubt their number #1 again with all the graduations, but how the team has reloaded makes me think a top 3 for sure.

have to be at least considered for #1

I think it would be relatively safe to say that no team is going to have as much firepower at the top of the system. Feliz is a top 5, Smoak probably in the top 20, and Perez and Scheppers might have enough helium to be considered for the top 50. Not sure there is another team with that much top end, near ready talent. Then there is a ton of solid depth behind those 4.

Maybe I’m being a homer, but I think Texas deserves at least serious consideration for the top spot again.

Perez is pretty much a lock for most top 25's as well

Say Feliz in the 4-8 range. Smoak at 10-15, Perez at or around 25, Scheppers in the 50-75 range. Then don’t forget Kiker, Moreland, Font, Medonca , Ross, Main, and MaxRam all have a chance to be sprinkeld in the 80-150 range.

If Texas adds Kukichi…. Wow.. We might push back to #1

I thought Kukichi decided on Japan?

Also, maybe we should tap the breaks a bit on Medonca, eh?

Still, it’s hard to be cynical about it. Hopefully some of these guys will be more like Jered Weaver when they start pitching as starters for the Rangers instead of Holland’s past year. It’s nice to finally be at the point of graduating talent to the majors, now I’m ready for them to start reaching their major league potential (more consistently).

Like Tommy Hunter?

by Brett Perryman on Oct 27, 2009 3:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmmm...let's see:

Weaver: 123 IP, 11-2, 2.56 ERA, 3.99 tRA, 3.90 FIP, with a 7.7 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9
Hunter: 112 IP, 9-6, 4.10 ERA, 5.27 tRA, 4.40 FIP with a 5.1 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9

Hunter was certainly a very pleasant surprise, but I don’t think you can compare it to the excitement that Weaver’s rookie season would have elicited. To be fair, Weaver ended up looking better than he was with a .246 BABIP and a 86.2 LOB% and suffered some regression the next year. Hunter, at .284 BABIP and 71.7 LOB%, probably suffers less regression due to luck next year.

Granted, if the highly regarded rookies put up Hunter numbers instead of Holland numbers in their first starting seasons on their way to establishing their MLB quality (be it ceiling or average projection), that would make this team a lot more competitive as far as building from within while competing.

by Brett Perryman on Oct 27, 2009 5:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The only area where I would disagree with you guys

is in the group after Feliz, Smoak, Perez, Scheppers. With Borbon exhausting his prospect status and Purke not signing, I think that there will be what is viewed as a big gap before the next group of guys. A lot of us had high hopes for Main going in, and Font made progress, but neither of them, nor any of Kiker, Beavan, etc. distinguished himself as close to a top 100 player. Some of the strong systems will probably be viewed as noticeably stronger than Texas in, say, the 5-8 range. Texas, of course, still has great depth, and that top foursome can stack up against most anyone’s. One guy who may help is Guttierrez if much stock is put in the stuff he’s shown late in the season, rather than his issues.

by Brett Perryman on Oct 27, 2009 3:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

What about people like

Robbie Ross and Max Ramirez? Doesn’t that help out in that range some?

I guess I’m saying a 5-9 of say Guttierez, Font, Ramirez, Main and Ross doesn’t seem that bad to me.

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.

by GhettoBear04 on Oct 27, 2009 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I mean I guess it depends on how you look at it

but from a national perspective, no, it’s not a real strong 5-9. The top systems, like Texas, Florida and Oakland last year, have guys in all of those spots who are definite top 100s and then good cases for top 100s. None of those guys is very close to that, no. I think that Main, for example, could be as good as some guys in that range, but to argue that he’s as strong as the equivalent in top systems, you’re getting into homerism and myopia.

by Brett Perryman on Oct 27, 2009 5:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gotcha.

I wasn’t trying to suggest that it was one of the best, but thank you for the clarification.

Also, to what were talking about above, I agree with what you are saying. I fully expect rookie pitchers to go through struggles. I’m just pointing out that for as much as I/we are for building through the farm system, it’s frustrating to think about the growing pains of rookie pitchers hurting the Rangers chances at the playoffs. Obviously, long-term it’s necessary. Hopefully, Holland’s results next year are closer to some of his peripherals and round out a consistent starting 4 pitchers (with Millwood, Feldman, and Hunter).

Having the 5th rotation spot be more variable/less effective is not as much of a concern, but it seems like it would be difficult to carry 2 struggling rookies for a whole year and still challenge for the playoffs. Thus, my comment about how it would be nice if one of these guys came in and lit it up from the get go (a la Weaver, Liriano, etc). They are highly rated enough when they are making their debuts and there’s enough of them, I hope it can happen.

Obviously though, you’d take what Hunter gave you this year from any rookie (or almost any starter). I’m not trying to be a homer, just ready for the Rangers to make that final push.

If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?

Does Moreland start in AA or AAA next year? I would think AA then promoted quickly to AAA. Thinking about it, should we package him in a deal with a couple pitching prospects to try to get a frontline starter.

Moreland's good showing in the AFL

means that he will probably start the 2010 season in Oklahoma. Hopefully, the presence of Smoak and Moreland will help revive MaxRam’s bat. Ramirez was a terror in 2008 when he was hitting in a line-up with other productive sluggers (Davis, Harrison, Majewski, and Murphy were all great for Frisco in ’08) but struggled when he was the primary power hitter in Oklahoma at the end of ’08 and in ’09.

2. Mitch Moreland, a Texas Rangers outfielder, has turned some heads here. Some scouts have put a big grade on him on the 20-80 scale, but there are others who are concerned his bat might be a little too slow, despite his understanding of the strike zone. I’ll have a more comprehensive scouting report on him in the near future.
