Umps union says no to baseball replay

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601079&sid=aCHm7rcEG1ps

Oct. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Blown calls by umpires in Major League Baseball’s postseason are part of the game and shouldn’t open the door to instant replay, the head of the officials’ union said.

Using video to review plays such as tags and whether a ball is fair or foul would interfere with the pace of games and turn umpires into “robots,” according to Lamell McMorris, chief negotiator for the World Umpires Association.

I thought I'd post this in reply to AJM's little bullcrap post blaming of course, Selig. You know, because Selig is in league with those icky owners, a liberal like AJM can go blaming a labor union of course, it must all be Selig's doing.

I know Dirkatron would be a fan

if they turned all umpires into robots. Especially if they had lasers shooting from the eyes.

The __________ union is a collection of jackasses.

Hank is 7 runs below a zombie replacement at first base. Do you realize how terrible that is? Zombie’s can’t think, they’re slow, and they’re often ejected from the game for eating opposing baserunners’ brains. - Ben quantifies Hank Blalock

What?

So every person who belongs to a union is a jackass?

Unions

While they’re not very popular these days, everyone should remember that 40-hour work weeks, overtime pay, benefits, and workers’ comp exist largely due to the past efforts of unions and workers’ rights organizations.

So

A lot of “Against the Day” dealt with the Anarchist movement from around the turn of the century.

And if you read history from that era (I highly recommend Emma Goldman’s autobiography), you will see that the unions were also variously breeding grounds or stalking horses for radical political movements, be they Communist or Anarchist.

Basically, the labor/industry clashes of the late 1800s/early 1900s involve both sides being rather unseemly.

really

who cares what the umps union has to say? Change the rule, and if they have to bring in replacement umps, we’ll have replay to fix their inevitable problems until they get better.

It isn’t as if the current crops of umpires is perfect or anything.

Well even if he thinks differently he can't exactly say it.

I’m sure his constituency there isn’t a big fan of removing responsibilities from umpires.

the preceding post was a great success.

What a stupid statement

I constantly hear umpires say that a good game is when they don’t get mentioned. Here is a way to correct missed calls, end those painful press conferences where umps have to admit their wrong, and keep themselves out of post-game stories. Instead, they want to hold onto that false archaic sense of pride that blown calls are part of the game and we should just get over it. I bet NFL refs don’t hate instant replay.

Instant replay

If for no other reason, to keep the umps honest (a.k.a. no kickbacks from the mob)

Pace of the Game

Has anyone put forth a good theory as to how the umpires will limit which calls are reviewed? It seems to me like the managers would want every close call to be reviewed. If this amounts to 4 or 5 throughout the game, that really is detrimental.

I’m in favor of instant replays, but I think it needs to be from an MLB employee whose sole job is to sit in the box upstairs and be able to review calls while the game happens and radio down to the crew…. If the announcers always get the call right after seeing the replay, someone right next to them can just radio down and save time… who knows

Do it like hockey does almost

EIther an off-site or a guy in the booth at the ballpark reviews every play thats reviewable and the home plate ump just goes to a phone thats near home plate and gets the call. There is very little affect on pace of the game

yup

and lest we forget, this is baseball! this isn’t a fast paced game to begin with.

College Football

is the same way. Great system. Every play gets reviewed. If it is necessary to stop the game, the game is stopped. If not, play on

Yeah

But sometimes they go overboard and replays can be detrimental to pace of play. If a team likes to no huddle or runs a hurry up type offense a review is going to stop that or slow it down and it hurts that team. But otherwise its a good system

Do like football..

Give each coach a fixed number of challenges, with no penalty for being wrong (since timeouts don’t exist) and you get the challenge back if you’re right.

I think 2-3 challenges tops per team should handle any likely contingency without affecting play too much.

I like how "would turn umpires into robots" is the drawback

Sorry old man, but if your job can be done better by a robot, we’ll go with the robot. Maybe you can find something else to get grossly overpaid for doing.

Man, I do not understand you sometimes
AJM’s little bullcrap post blaming of course, Selig. You know, because Selig is in league with those icky owners, a liberal like AJM can go blaming a labor union of course, it must all be Selig’s doing.

I don’t think AJM blamed Selig, but whatever. “Selig is in league with those icky owners.” Yes, yes he is. “Icky owners.” Is that sarcasm? Are you implying they are or aren’t icky? Or is the sarcasm that Selig isn’t in league with the owners? “[A] liberal . . . can go blaming a labor union . . . .” Unions are traditionally seen as a “liberal” idea. Why would a liberal enjoy blaming a liberal idea? And are you sying AJM is blaming Selig or the union?

I seriously have no clue what you are implying.

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

He doesn’t either. He likes to stir the pot and start shit. He has no idea what point he’s trying to get across, because he doesn’t have one. His sole purpose is to try and ruffle feathers, and sadly he isn’t even good at that anymore.

why does everybody act like turning umpires into robots is a bad thing?

Is it because of “tradition”?

This game already threw tradition out the window with DH’s, instant replay, steroids, and interleague play. I say “bring on the technology if we have it”. I’m sick of strike zones being different, I’m sick of being able to determine if a call sucks within 5 seconds (thanks, TiVO!) while MLB acts like it will add 2 hours to each game, and I’m sick of the umpires having this holier-than-thou attitude where they would rather stand there and tell me that the sky is purple when everyone can plainly see that the sky is blue just because they get their feelings hurt when confronted.

Screw them.

umpires missing calls is part of the game huh?

well, then baseball doesn’t want the game to improve. I think we shouldn’t review that many things, but tags on the bases, HRs and foul balls. that’s it. balls and strikes should always remain in an umpires hands.

A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.

The world is very black and white to you, my friend. Everyone is either a liberal or a …. whatever you are (I’ll refrain from name-calling). I envy you. I wish I could cultivate a world— view was as simple and myopic as yours. Good luck being an ideologue.
