Follow LSB on Twitter
I broke down and created a Twitter account for LSB.
It is called lonestarball.
If you want to follow LSB -- I anticipate this will be getting "tweets" when new front page posts go up -- go sign up to follow us.

IF it sticks around, it will be because of that – and then only temporarily until people get bored of tweeting their lives. Most likely it won’t stick around.

Your point is wrong.
Social networking sites are a “here now, gone tomorrow” thing. IF Twitter is going to stick as relevant (I’m not saying it will), it is absolutely NOT going to be because of a use as social networking.
Social Networking means it is irrelevant quickly (Friendster, Myspace). A use aside from social networking means it could be here to stay. Relevancy because of social networking use necessarily means that it will be left behind extremely quickly. So to say Twitter can only last if it utilizes social netowrking is a fallacy.

Maybe I’ve tried twitter and seen that it doesn’t work for me and have am coming from a pretty good place when I say it isn’t that good at what it’s supposed to do.

I am not suggesting that you have to use Twitter
Go ahead and don’t use it; I’m sure Twitter will march on, somehow. I think we are kind of similar – I have been using Twitter and Google Reader for years, like you, and I have found that I prefer Twitter to do the same function. You prefer Google Reader or something else. That’s all totally cool. It’s the information age, baby! You can do whatever you feel!

Here is what I don't understand
and I’ll admit, I don’t have a blackberry or iPhone or anything like that, so “mobile updates” aren’t something I entirely relate to. But one of the reasons I don’t have one is I don’t see the urgency to know everything at this instant. But still, I can understand why people want universal e-mail access or financial updates, etc (I continuously have drudge refreshing at work, just for the latest unfiltered news), but twitter seems more focused on communicating people’s latest perspectives, opinions and feelings. It is just this urgency culture to an extreme (for me), and I personally don’t understand that.
I like LSB, and am regularly reading it and keeping up to date on it. But I honestly can’t understand why someone would need to know when Adam makes a post within 30 seconds. Maybe I’m just a bit slower paced

If people are just posting their facebook status updates like, “Mondays are the worst!!!” then don’t follow them. Instead, follow things like LSB, Blogging the Boys, or MSNBC for actual info. In my usage...
…it is a lot like a blog reader. The reason I like Twitter over, say, Google Reader or something is that it’s condensed.
by FuturePants on Oct 23, 2009 11:13 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
unless I am on a phone
I don’t want condensed. I want a bit more than “Morning post” with a link. Not for SBN but for the thousands of other feeds I get.
And so far, I haven’t really seen a good integration of twitter to a phone.
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)

by FuturePants on Oct 23, 2009 11:35 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
iphone
but what are you using twitter for? Are you visiting those links on your iphone? I’d rather not do that since I still don’t like the web browser enough to read something unless I absolutely have to. I have feeds to 25 different sites and I don’t need information on any of them immediately.
But if I did, I’d rather get longer summaries just by using google reader (or a better RSS reader) on the iphone
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
by ab03 on Oct 23, 2009 11:41 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I use it for news and information.
Occasionally I do follow the links, yes. If it is something I want to know, like someone tweets about how they have posted upcoming Yeasayer tour dates, I’ll check it out. If someone tweets that the new MGMT album is coming out in March, there’s no need to follow that link.
by FuturePants on Oct 23, 2009 11:51 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's cool with me
I just don’t like unique usernames. I like how Facebook uses actual names.
by cmkelly29 on Oct 23, 2009 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I have Google Reader...
and my web browser with extensive bookmarks that I visit daily. I guess the way we check the Internet isn’t limited to just one way anymore. That said, getting 140 character bursts of information from websites, mostly as links to their website, all day would drive me crazy.
I’m mostly being a dick. I am glad that you have found use in Twitter, like yes, many others have. I just need more actual content while checking out the sites I like.
by ghostofErikThompson on Oct 23, 2009 11:17 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Then look at it as a screen.
There are music blogs that I don’t visit every day (like Cause = Time), but if they have an interesting video or some tour news, I’ll check it out. The only reason I’d be aware is because he tweets his updates.
by FuturePants on Oct 23, 2009 11:19 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
i can't imagine how using google reader wouldn't be faster
you’re one of the first people i’ve met that claims twitter is a better internet browser experience. I guess for you it might be but that certainly hasn’t been the case for me.
The only true advantage I’ve seen of twitter is that people use it more actively than facebook and I’m just not that into social networking to jump on board
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)

If you want to use it for social networking, then so be it.
I don’t use it for that at all; I use it for news. It’s a better, faster, easier integration than Google Reader and a shit ton easier to read on my phone than GR. It’s instant and real time, and it feeds precise, condensed info to me. I really see no downside to Twitter – unless you are following some weirdo who tweets annoying crap (See: Jason Grilli).
by FuturePants on Oct 23, 2009 11:37 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
just all very wrong
not nearly enough information for it to be useful. I require more than 10 characters and a link to know whether I want to read something. And then when the link does come in, I’d like to read that on a computer anyway

So
“Wilco announces tour dates” isn’t enough to tell you if you want to check it out? If it’s a band you like, click the link to read it all. If it’s “Miley Cyrus tour dates,” I don’t need to see the whole post; I don’t care and don’t want to see it.

maybe you go to different websites
but of the feeds i look at, maybe 5% would be something instantaneous that I need right away. Otherwise, it’s a complete duplication of effort as I’m just going to look at everything on google reader anyway next time I’m on a laptop -which btw is about 9 hours a day
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)

Nobody needs anything right away aside from medical care.
To discount Twitter because “5% would be something instaneous that I need right away” is silly. You’re being silly.
If you want to use Google Reader to read full entries of blogs, then go for it. I’m not saying google reader sucks. I’m just saying I prefer condensed headlines only so I can pick and choose which info I look at an entire post for. If it’s something I want to see/read about, I’ll go to the site. If it’s something boring/irrelevant/whatever, I’ll just skip it.
Skipping one tweet is a lot easier than looking through 500 blog entries via my Google Reader.
by FuturePants on Oct 23, 2009 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
google reader isn't entire entries
and I usually just hit “next item” for most of them or skim the article. Get a much better idea of what the article is about.
and i don’t even know what your last sentence means. 500 blog entries is comparable to 1 tweet? Are you even trying anymore?
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)

Am I trying what?
And google reader absolutely has a large portion of the entire article and/or blog entry, not sure what you are talking about.
Skipping a tweet is a lot easier than scrolling through an article.
Reading 140 character summary of an article is a lot easier than skimming an article trying to get what it is about.
Are you trying? I don’t get that comment.

From the author's P.O.V.
wouldn’t it then prioritize the tweet over the article?
For instance, you better get that Tweet right so that FuturePants’ attention is captured enough to go read the article. And with all the other Tweets you’re competing against, it better stand out. Nevermind the article.

Oh Man
The FSSW Twitter is a classic example of what I do not want. So much irritating crap on there; very little baseball news.

Tweh.
I’ll probably get an account one of these days since 99% of the civilized world seems to have one, but the only Twitter feed I read right now is Kurt Sutter’s- he’s the show runner/creator of Sons of Anarchy.

Hell with it - what is an RSS feed v. Twitter v. Google reader
Yes, I could probably figure this out on my own but don’t have the desire. But if I’m missing something that’s really useful I might as well find that out if someone thinks they are useful.
It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

I like twitter
I’m all aboard the fucking twitter train. I hate it, it sucks, but what are you gonna do. I love it.
It has a way of working into your life. Funny to see google and Ms basically fighting over twitter too now (who gets the twitter search deal! 25 batrillion twitters a day!).
I see it as the revenge of reading. I looked at how phenomenally popular youtube got and was like you know, that’s video. Wheres the reading site that catches on. Because reading>video. Well it’s twitter.
by Sharky on Oct 23, 2009 12:26 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Oh but basically
It’s a personal website thats just dead simple so any idiot can do it. I mean, even a blog requires a little work or knowledge I guess. Twitter, ANYBODY can do.
Also, interestingly I’ve been reading how facebook is all scared of twitter, so much so they you know, twitterized facebook now. Made facebook more like twitter. Cause they’re scared. Interesting stuff.
I dunno, predicting internet trends is interesting, I mean who saw twitter coming? Who saw youtube coming? Not Mark Cuban, for sure, lol. He was busy with broadcast.com that in the end nobody gave a flying crap about.

Speaking of Twitter
if you are one of Franie Piliere’s first 1000 followers, you’ll gain access to complete scouting reports of all the AFL prospects. He has to have those 1000 before the AFL ends though.
Also, Adam, I have invited him to come by and have a Q&A with us. I’m still waiting for your permission.

Frankie worked with me at Scout for a couple of years
Great guy, and a great baseball guy. He just left the Rangers’ scouting department to take that job at AOL FanHouse, and so far he is doing a great job.
I made fun of Twitter when it came out, and resisted for awhile. Now I’ve found it to be a great way to get prospect info. The majority of the people I follow are guys like Ben Badler, Jonathan Mayo, Jorge Arangure, Kiley McDaniel, and Frankie. If you use it right, it can be a great center for info.

I used my LSB email account
And just agreed to follow anyone in my contacts who has a Twitter feed.
So most of those people are either writers I’ve emailed with in the past (Keith Law, Rob Neyer, etc.) or other SBN bloggers.

My twitter
I signed up for an account a while ago because of CJ. He and Grill are the only two people on and I’ve made 0 tweets.
But for some currently secret reasons a couple weeks from now if I have even a handful of followers I’m going to start sending out some occasional messages in it regarding various things in areas you might suspect.
If anyone wants to follow me (trust me, 0 non-baseball things) I’ll return the favor though i may not actually check the site to read other peoples stuff=p

“you gave into twitter”
“you only did this because Nolan Ryan forced you to do it”
