Friday morning Rangers things
Gil LeBreton has a column about Rudy Jaramillo, the Rangers' search for a new hitting coach, and the issues with the team's approach, which includes a quote from the Cubs' Derrek Lee saying that hitting coaches are overrated...
Evan Grant talks about the Rangers' efforts in Japan, and wonders whether their pursuit of top Japanese players will ever bear fruit...

Looked up Lee's numbers this year after seeing his name there...
Wow, somehow that slipped under my radar. .972 ops and 35 hrs? Nice, didn’t think he’d do that again.
And of course hes right about hitting coaches. As long as they are basically competent as Im sure they all are at the mlb level.
the preceding post was a great success.

I think the mediocre/poor ones have basically no effect
I think the truly great hitting coaches CAN have an effect, personally

It seems to me
that both hitting and pitching coaches can help players stay consistent with their mechanics. Perhaps they can help someone eke the most out of their abilities, maybe teach a new pitch or grip that changes a pitcher’s repertoire and helps him succeed, but they cannot create abilities a player doesn’t have. And even the very best of them is not going to be successful with every player they coach.
We just have to have realistic expectations of what can be achieved.

how much of an effect can they really have
you can make the argument especially over the last two seasons that Jaramillo hardly impacted the Rangers. MB apparently brought a different approach much like Abreu gets credit for with the Angels, plus last year when our offense was rolling, Jaramillo was out due to surgery.
what did the great Jaramillo do this year? I think hitting coaches have very little effect, with the exception of their philosophy if players adopt it. it is up to the players.

Confidence... That's really about all that a hitting coach can do.
Except…. Cruz and CD both benefitted from adjustments to their stance and swings. So, I think young guys can still have their mechanics adjusted considerably.
Other than that, a hitter needs confidence. That’s something the hitting coach can instill.
Pro baseball has always been a dream, so this is pretty freakin’ cool out here. -- Tim Steggall, undrafted Rangers minor leaguer.

I think hitting coaches
are mostly about preparing the hitter for a game and making sure their mechanics aren’t out of whack. You just don’t have many raw hitting talents make it to the Majors so the hitting coach doesn’t ever have much of a project to work with. With pitchers, you can get a power arm up into the Majors and let the pitching coach adjust his mechanics, teach him a new pitch, or whatever. How many times does a Greg Golson/Engel Beltre type make it to the Majors if they haven’t improved past that raw talent stage? The closest thing is a guy like Botts who has a huge hole in his swing that usually never gets fixed.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Tweeting about a blog
that reminds of Stephen Wright’s joke about microwaving instant coffee. When a blog comment can be posted and read immediately tweeting seems a bit superfluous.
