Ben Sheets looking to return in 2010
Apparently, he is throwing off flat ground. I'm not sure if I sign, him, but he would most likely only get a low-risk incentive laden deal. He is a TORP if he's healthy, and wouldn't cost a draft pick. Do you sign him?

Depends on just how little money we can spend
But i’d certainly like to take the gamble.
the preceding post was a great success.

At least this is some news
Good spot.

And the little bastard threw it for a swinging strike three in a 3-2 count. He’s blessed. And ballsy.

I think going after a bat and Joaquin Benoit should be higher priorities
But if he would still consider coming here, you have to pursue.
Hank is 7 runs below a zombie replacement at first base. Do you realize how terrible that is? Zombie’s can’t think, they’re slow, and they’re often ejected from the game for eating opposing baserunners’ brains. - Ben quantifies Hank Blalock

Benoit will only require a minor league deal with a invite to spring training most likely
It shouldn’t be very high on the to do list IMO

Why not?
I think snapping up a good reliever on the cheap should be pretty damned important.

I agree getting a guy like Benoit is nice
and it adds an extra arm.
I think we need a bigger reliever than Benoit to add to our bullpen. There are lots out there, and I expect there to be plent of non-tendered relievers that could be given a shot at our bullpen. I really like Calero, Grabow or Gonzalez, but we definitely need to add an arm.
Other pitchers of interest that could be had a little cheaper — Harden, Duchscherer, Escobar etc.. DRaysBay had a nice writeup on Escobar here

See
Thing is, I think Benoit can be just as good as any of those guys, and for less money. Duchscherer would be a good target too.

he can
but then again, he is a big risk coming off of an injury. I don’t know how healthy he is, or how long he will hold up, so I think we have to get a more legitimate arm. We need a lefty in the pen anyway. And possibly Harrison or AJ Murray can step up in that role as an extra lefty, but I think we sign someone for this year like Grabow or Gonzalez. I’m not a fan of Beimel.

Grabow
I really liked him too, but then I remembered he’s a type A.
If we pick up a lefty reliever, I think it’ll most likely be someone coming off a terrible season, like Scott Schoenweis or Will Ohman and try to fix them (a la JD’s typical MO). Either that or it’ll be someone from the old fart corps like Jamie Walker or Mayday Mahay to provide that “veteran presence” that seems to be so important to this club

Good point
I was unaware of grabow as a type A. How is he a type A and CJ a type B

Its important but not at the front of the list of things to do
Benoit isn’t gonna get alot of attention from other teams I don’t think. And hes been a Ranger his whole professional career so I think hes gonna come back to us unless some other team just absolutely blows him away with an offer. We can wait till December or January probably before making it official with him.

All things considered, I think it would be wise to bring back Benoit.

I don't think...
I’d go higher than a one year incentive filled deal with 3-4 mil guaranteed.
And that’s only if he’s truly healthy and ready like they say he will be by ST. I’m still skeptical of his health, but a healthy Sheets in the Rangers rotation next year could be great.

This is exactly
the kind of player Daniels has gotten in the past and succeeded on: buy low guys who come in looking for a big contract. I think you get Sheets if you can. I wouldn’t get into a bidding war for him but I would go after him up to a point.

I bet
the Mets and the Brewers and maybe a couple other teams will be in on him too, though.

did I miss something that stated otherwise?
