Taylor Teagarden heading to the AFL
Richard Durrett writes that Taylor Teagarden is being sent by the Rangers to join the team's AFL contingent at Surprise.
I'd guess he'll be replacing catcher Doug Hogan, who the Rangers had included as part of their initial group.
But it leads one to wonder...is this just a concern that Teagarden didn't get enough at bats during the regular season while backing up Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and wanting to get him more time against live pitching in a game situation? Or could the Rangers be talking to a team that has an interest in Teagarden, and that wants to have a chance to scout him more this fall?

Do you trade him though?
Can we role with a Salty/Pudge? I think yes to both.

I think you can trade him
even if Salty is a league avg offensive and defensive catcher. You could sign Pudge, so he can ground into those important inning ending double plays.
We, also, have MaxRam, that would be nice to get healthy and give him a shot at our catcher position.

i'm sure if we do trade him
it’ll be a far cry from a Buccholz and Teagarden trade that we were talking about last winter

Come on...that was never a realistic trade.

either way TT
was in talks regarding Boston, but he was considered untouchable, from reports by the Rangers. Now I’m not saying TT would have ever gotten Buccholz (not by himself), but that last year we legitimately were talking trades like that. His value was at an all-time high. Now his value is very low in terms of trades, and if we do trade now, we either sell low, or sell based on a belief he won’t be better. The other situation is that we could up his value a bit and get a better return.

All of that is conjecture
we have very little idea what either team really thought.

Particularly in light of the fact...
…that they anointed Salty the starter last season from the get-go, and seemed to have little interest in Teagarden being anything other than a backup.

You know, I'm not so sure....
Everyone needs to realize that Salty just had a fairly significant surgery to his throwing arm. Will he even be ready to go in ST?
If we trade TT and Salty isn’t ready to go, then we get Pudge for the whole year (and we don’t even know if he’s going to re-sign here)
So, I’m betting that we just want him to get some extra AB’s.

That is another reason why Salty is going to winterball to play with Feliz

I forgot he was going to winter ball, guess we'll see soon enough.

well if Tea is traded and the Rangers think Salty can't start or isn't ready,
then I bet Pudge signs. He would have to figure that signing means a full time catching gig which he prob wants.

We'll get Pudge for the whole year anyway
Ron Washington manages the team, remember?

Why isn't TT playing winter ball?
If ABs were a concern he would be playing this winter.

Yeah. Would lean heavily toward this as a scouting trip to AFL.
I really like the idea of Pudge and Teagarden replacing SalTea from my fanboy perspective, since Pudge has always been my favorite player and Teagarden is the one whose career path I most envy.

Teagarden's Career path?
You mean Chad Kreuter without the ability to draw walks at the plate?

Hopefully they are shopping him.
I’d rather get a cheap veteran who can actually be a backup.

I don't know
Situation isn’t very good anyway you look at it. Pudge is still good defensively but his offense has slipped considerably. Salty has improved significantly defensively, but has shown very little of his so-called offensive potential. His arm doesn’t appear to be in the same class as Pudge or Teagarden in terms of throwing out runners and he is coming off an army injury. Teagarden didn’t provide anything offensively this past season. Pudge is old, Salty can’t stay healthy and Teagarden is an automatic out.

Salty started out last year very well throwing out runners
I don’t know what this arm injury will do to that but he was superior to Teagarden for most of last year in that department.

x
According to this, Teagarden was worth 3.1 CS runs this year, and Salty was -0.5. Pretty large gap in that department.
Where Salty outperformed him was WP/PB runs: 1.6 to 0.9. In fact, that looks like one of the better marks among AL catchers in WP/PB runs.
Pudge, to save anyone who wonders the time of looking at the chart, was worth 1.4 CS runs and 0.1 WP/PB runs.

Im sure Saltys injury severaly hurt him in that stat
All I know is Salty started off the season throwing out his first 20 something guys who tried to steal or something like that. Im busy watching football but I remember at the beginning of the year he was throwing out everyone

My issue with Salty
Can he stay healthy? If Salty would flash some of that offensive potential that was so hyped about when he was traded to the Rangers, this wouldn’t be an issue. Right now, if I am going to have to choose between two light hitting catchers, I would take Teagarden just because his body appears better structured to catch a lot of games. Now if Salty was hitting for average and had a much lower strikeout rate, then you get him in the games and rotate him between catcher, DH and occasionally first.

If Salty is at DH or 1b
our offense is fucked.

Like I said
Like I specified, if Salty was capable of being much, much more productive with the bat. I think you could find a role for him somewhere considering that he would then be a dangerous switch hitter. I do not believe that he is an everyday catcher and I don’t think Teagarden is because he is terrible offensively.

good
To me he could use the pratice. I never really liked him a whole lot. But than again he didn’t do a whole lol of games
