Aroldis Chapman has unrealistic salary demands
The Mets are reportedly no longer interested in Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman, due to his asking price of $40-60 million. I would be shocked if any major league team were willing to pay him that much, particularly given the poor track record of Cuban defectors in the majors.

On a similar line: how much would you pay for Feliz if he were a FA today?
the preceding post was a great success.

well, we don't have to think about that
for another 5 or 6 years

which I'm thankful for
but the point was that hes similar to chapman right now, lots of stuff but no (real) mlb track record.
of course he has more than chapman though.
the preceding post was a great success.

Definitely more than Aroldis
Chapman is very raw, and very little is known about his secondary pitches.
I like steak.

Something like what Strasburg got
Maybe a little more. Hes gonna have to spend time in the minors so its not like Dice-K. And Dice-K hasn’t been that great so teams are a little weary of big money to these types of guys.

See, I didn't figure he'd get near what DiceK got...
Not near the track record and not nearly as versatile a repertoire…
But young lefty on the young market with that kinda arm… Woooo…

Well
Dice-K was the theory as to what Strasburg would get and we see what he got actually. Even though Chapman is alot more unknown and his secondary stuff isnt Strasburgs level his velocity alone from the left side I think should even their contracts out.

Cubans always seem overrated
to me.

I feel that way about Japanese.

Well, you don't see anyone
predicting that kind of money for Tazawa or Kikuchi. Their predicted contracts were eminently reasonable. It seems every time a Cuban defects they’re talking about ludicrous amounts of money. I’d pay more for an older, experienced player, but sheesh.

Well
one big difference between Chapman and Tazawa is about 10 mph. I would have been curious what sort of bonus Kikuchi would have garnered, but he was also younger and further away from helping, which has a big impact on the willingness to go overboard (and you could argue is a big reason that clubs won’t give Chapman crazy money).
I don’t disagree with you, but one thing I will say is that Chapman was more impressive to my amateur eyes in the WBC than what, say, Jim Callis seems to think of him.

Well, yeah
that velo is indeed attractive, but I’m pretty skeptical that it’s $50-60 million attractive. I’m kind of jaded towards Cubans right now, I guess.

It doesn't make sense
to give him that much. You could sign a quality FA for 3-4 years for almost that little. The investments make sense when you are paying extra on the front end but have the potential to make it up on the back end. At that price and for a guy who isn’t Strasburg-esque, you’re almost guaranteed not to get your money’s worth. So I don’t even see the point of talking about him with respect to his silly demands, whether the Yankees come close to meeting them or not. Get it to the $10-20 million range and some of the things I said could be more relevant.

That's about the range
I was thinking, $10-15M or so. Actually, I’d be pretty surprised if he gets too much more than that, most teams aren’t stupid enough to throw 3 or 4 times that his way. Maybe the Yankees or Boston offer him $25M or more, but how many other teams could afford to take that big a gamble?
