by Conjunction on Oct 25, 2009 4:37 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah

Why are they going through this? They have two really talented RBs who are available, and they’re insisting on losing yards on all of Barber’s carries.

Fact: tony romo is good

He had uncharacteristically poor accuracy in 2 of the games this year and was truly bad in those, but thats not what we’ve seen the rest of his career regardless of the receivers involved aside from when he injured his thumb, no reason to think it would continue.. and hasn’t the last two games.

the preceding post was a great success.

this will be telling

cowboys have had a really hard time scoring in the red zone. falcons are really good in the red zone. odds are stacked against them scoring a TD

Whoever asked why they don't utilize Bennett more

It is kind of hard, I think, to run a 2 WR/2TE offense when neither of your TEs are true blocking TEs.

You could use them both with a RB, FB, and WR, and cause some problems with matchups for the defense that way, I think, but using both Witten and Bennett with 2 wides means you’ve got two guys who are better pass catchers than blockers and limits your options, I think, in terms of pass protection.

by Adam J. Morris on Oct 25, 2009 4:38 PM CDT reply actions

I think Witten is a damn good blocker

Hes a great receiving TE but a pretty stout blocker too

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Oct 25, 2009 4:40 PM CDT up reply actions

I could understand the arguement

If Witten and Bennet were subpar blockers. But they’re both well above average in that respect.

I like steak.

by Conjunction on Oct 25, 2009 4:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh that was me

But I just think that Bennett is a type of player you can line up wide and use him in the passing game. Its just so confusing when we have two TEs that linebackers have a difficult time covering so they have to use a CB to cover, which is a mismatch.

Bill Simmons: "I will tell you right now, if the Boston Red Sox traded Clay Buchholz for Justin Smoak, I will run around my neighborhood naked...celebrating for an hour. I love Justin Smoak"

2 TE set

Bob Sturm has done a lot of talking and writing on his blog about how effective the offense has been in the 2 TE set. It doesn’t show in numbers for Witten and Bennett but the offense on the whole has been outstanding in that lineup.

LoneStarBall....You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

by LSBUser on Oct 25, 2009 4:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Sturm knows much more than I do about that sort of thing

I was throwing out my initial thought about why they wouldn’t go to that package more. Teams usually, when they go 2 TEs, have at least one of them being a 6th-OL-type blocking TE.

by Adam J. Morris on Oct 25, 2009 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions

i don't think that's true at all

i bet by the percentages, it is pretty close

you only think KO returns are more productive because you see them more often but KO’s happen so much more than Haily marry attempts

I highly doubt its even that close

Sure you see more kickoff returns but I can only remember a handful of hail marys that have worked in the last ten plus years. I mean we are talking like less than 5. Its very very minimal.

by bigsteve on Oct 25, 2009 4:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep

Because the defense usually has 6-8 guys back in the secondary and The QB also can’t hit the receiver in stride,so the ball gets huge airtime- giving the defenders time to get under the ball, at which point all they have to do is swat it away, whereas the receivers have to catch, hang on while being pummeled, and occasionally manuever just to land inbounds.

I like steak.

by Conjunction on Oct 25, 2009 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions

but then you could just position your KO return coverage in the same way

play guys back, etc.

by ab03 on Oct 25, 2009 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Except on a kickoff return you have 10 blockers

On a hail mary you have the 5 OL plus the QB so at most its 5 on 7 or 8. And most likely you keep a TE or RB in to block so its only 3 or 4 vs 7 or 8

Depends

I don’t know what the coverage map looks like but as long as the game thats going to the majority of the nation is close thats all that really matters. Fans in their teams city are gonna watch regardless of scores most likely. So like earlier here in Dallas the Minn/Pit game was on and it was close. I could have cared less what the other games were doing.

Well, this is weird

Call was overturned in the game, meaning that the Saints didn’t score and had the ball on the 1 yard line, no timeouts. Right when they blew the whistle, the clock would start running. Saints already had their kicking team on the field, to get points…..

Yet, Miami calls a Timeout, allowing the Saints the opportunity to put their offense back on the field. They soon follow with a QB sneak to score a TD

hes probably kicking himself for not going last year

Honestly I don’t know why he went back. He was thought to be the clear cut #1 choice so going back couldn’t have really improved his draft stock. Instead he went back, got hurt, needs surgery, and could slip a little. He cost himself several millions of dollars and a year of having it

by Longhorn on Oct 25, 2009 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Look I am a Longhorn fan so I give horns the benefit of the doubt

But that statement is dumb. Maybe the guys selected at those spots hes better than but this is the Lions we are talking about who is selecting. I imagine had the Cowboys had those picks we would have picked Harvin (picked 2 spots later in the 1st) who looks to be better than Roy. Roy was a good receiver on a bad Detroit team but on a good team Roy is at best a #2 receiver. Supposedly his best trait are his hands and without having the stats in front of me I would venture he is on pace to drop more balls than TO did as a Cowboy. His speed is average at best and I realize he is tall and a long strider (I myself am so I understand it) but he hasn’t ran away from anyone in his year here.

The trade is a bust. It sucks but we have to move on. We will most likely win in spite of it but having Roy Williams as our #1 receiver means our receiving corps are in serious trouble

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

bust?

give it some time. No WR coming to a new team during a year does well. You can’t name one. And a handful of games into this season, Tony and Roy’s chemistry hasn’t been perfect, but that’s going to happen. He’s still averaging 20 yards a catch on a team with A LOT of weapons. He’ll be fine…

And Harvin? Don’t be ridiculous.

Average Speed? I’d be willing to guess he’s still a 4.4 guy…

I’m willing to give it some time. It took Tony and TO time, it’s certainly took Tony and Miles some time…everyone is so brainwashed by all these Ex-Cowboys/ESPN’s rhetoric on Romo and Roy…they forget to intelligently analyze the dynamic of this particular situation.

usa

by Longhorn on Oct 25, 2009 10:27 PM CDT up reply actions

He had a whole offseason to get the "chemistry" down

He sucks. Only a blind Longhorn sunshine pumper wouldn’t acknowledge that. He had one good season in his career. Hes on pace for less than 40 catches this season. Guys who average 3 catches per game with a decent YPC are 2nd and 3rd receivers on most teams not their #1.

If he has 4.4 speed he hasn’t shown it yet. Maybe on the TD against TB when he was running alone but the next time I see him beat a defender on a route will be the first.

Oh hes a great blocker though so maybe thats what we can hang our hat on

Miami completed a pass where the WR broke a tackle

got to the 6 or 7 yard line and went to spike it. They spiked it with 1 second left. If they had scored a TD it wouldn’t have mattered in real life but it would have kept NO from covering the spread. But when they spiked it their WR wasn’t set so it was a 10 second runoff which ended the game

Im tired of hearing about how great the Giants are

They have, in my opinion, been exposed. They are a team that beats up on weak ones and pads their stats but against good teams they are not that good. They got destroyed last week against New Orleans and against Dallas it took us gifting them 20+ points and a last second FG to barely win. Now tonight they have given up 24 points to the Cardinals.

Eli Manning is not a good QB. Don’t give me this bullshit about he won a SB because Trent fucking Dilfer also won a SB and right now they are really close in terms of talent IMO.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Oct 25, 2009 10:15 PM CDT reply actions

That last statement

Is pretty silly, and I loathe Eli.

Baltimore winning that Super Bowl is the worst thing that ever happened to football arguments, because now whenever you tell your buddy that QB X sucks and therefore the likelihood of winning a title is that much smaller, the inevitable response is “Hey man, Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl!”. Now we’re seeing a bastardization of that argument here: “Hey man, QB X (Who won a Super Bowl) can’t be that great cause Trent Dilfer also won a Super Bowl!”

Eli Manning is not a good QB

Hes gotten by on name alone. Put any pressure at all on him and hes toast. Put him on a team without the steller D the Giants have had in the past and he probably isn’t a .500 QB.

by gossamer on Oct 26, 2009 12:37 AM CDT reply actions

Well

So, I guess offensive coordinator is back to not mattering this week.

I really felt like the season was on the line in this game. If you assume you need 10-6 to make the playoffs, lose this and you’re 3-3, you can afford 3 more losses and you have 2 with Philly, at NYG, and at NO remaining, plus the rest of the games.

Now, take care of business against Seattle and you’re 5-2, only need to go 5-4, basically playing with house money the rest of the year in all your tough games. The season becomes downhill.

Also, Washington switching to Shermaln Lewis as playcaller is a break. The at Washington game could have been tough. Now you can chalk up two wins against Wash, another against Oakland, and probably another against Seattle, thats 9 right there.

The divisions is definitely back in play now too. The tough loss to the Giants hurts a lot more now.

For the game itself..it is what i is, but Garrett is always going to be a bonehead about situational calls. I dont know why but he just wont take the downhill calls, and he always runs on 2nd and 10, and when was the last time this team threw a true deep pass? Miles Austin gets long TD’s every week but none of them are true deep passes.

That said, I have to remind even myself sometimes, Garrett’s pretty good. The fact is we’re 2nd in the NFL in yards a game.

And there are 8 of 32 teams in the NFL with a better than 4-2 record. Has their ever been a good team more maligned than the Phillips/Jones Cowboys? I’ve never seen it, or even close. As always, you’d think the team was 0-6.

Around the league…Indy has a new OC this year, Clyde Christensen. replacing ancient Tom Moore, I wondered how it would effect them, I thought it might be positive, and it seems to be. Though I dont put a ton of stock in it, since Manning is basically the OC there.

Also Arizona is underrated, I thought they would beat the Giants. Whisenhunt is a better playcaller than Haley too.

SF is still overrated and Singletary is the worst coach I’ve seen in a while…come in and can a decent OC in Martz..yeah, they might have one more win this year. I’m only surprised how close it was, which makes me think the Texans are still pretty bad. Although Schaub is up in the QB rating leaders now, which means Shanahan is doing well. The problem there will be defense, they aren’t going anywhere.

Line is Dallas by 9.5 on Seattle.

If you want easy money take Philly and give the points with Washington. Easssssy money.

Also

Payton Manning has been in the league 12 years? Wow. I heard him say that in an interview and couldn’t believe it.

I thought he was 28 or 29-ish.

me either

neither of our “locks” worked out so well, but I’m taking Wash and the points tonight. Just because home team dogs on Monday night are usually a good play and I usually take the points on inter-divisional rivalries when the spread is a touchdown or more.

I had original picked the Eagles, but the more I think about it

the less confident I feel in that pick.

Desperate teams at home are tough to beat in the NFL, especially playing a team that is capable of losing to the Raiders.

The old eagles, the Brian Dawkins eagles

I’m curious to see how this Eagles team handles adversity

As bad as the Redskins are,

they’re better than the Raiders…

annnd...?

KC 14 @ WAS 6
OAK 13 @ KC 10
KC 14 @ PHI 34

by cmkelly29 on Oct 26, 2009 1:48 PM CDT up reply actions

also...

PHI 38@ CAR 10
WAS 17 @ CAR 20

It’s really not a good way to measure a team.

I hate hearing the phrase “desperate team.”
The Detroit Lions (who have beaten the Skins this year) were desperate for 16 games last year, and they still sucked.
The Redskins are horribly coached and old. They have 2 wins, against TB and STL. They won those games by a combined 5 points.

by cmkelly29 on Oct 26, 2009 1:56 PM CDT up reply actions

the point im trying to make

is: “The Eagles lost to the Raiders” is just as bad as common scores.

by cmkelly29 on Oct 26, 2009 6:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I just dont have a feel for how good they are

And how well they will overcome adversity without Brian Dawkins.
I definitely the Redskins are capable of winning this game. I think they’re better than they’ve shown thru their first 7.

Imma give you a hint

The Eagles are gonna win easily lol.

Sherman Lewis, really?

Cowboys extend Ware per a Jay Glazer tweet
i’m reporting dallas and d ware have agreed on new 6 yr deal worth up to 13 per yr and nearly 40mil guaranteed. well worth it!

by octoberty on Oct 26, 2009 1:54 PM CDT reply actions

Is it really a good move?

How old is Ware anyway? Must be 27 right? If so, he’s probably basically done.

Ahh well, the flip side of players not mattering in the NFL is contracts dont either. You could always get some guy at minimum salary who will be as good as a 10 million dollar player. In the end it’s all funny money, a big contract never hurts you.

That’s why if there’s ever unfettered free agency in the NFL, the NY teams still wont be able to buy titles like the Yankees do.

So

If Washington wins today, with a guy that is basically coming in off the street to call plays for the first time in almost a decade, is that proof that OCs don’t matter?

Yeah

Remind me never to doubt the Redskins ineptitude

What I learned

-That Jason Cambell is playing his last games as the starting QB for the Redskins. I expect him to pop up again in a few years, and be somewhat successful.

-Donovan McNabb is struggling.

-The Eagles are not scary.

by octoberty on Oct 27, 2009 7:47 AM CDT up reply actions

You're right, the Eagles aren't scary...

but they’re a decent team. I think this season (so far) has shown us that NFC East kinda sucks.

by cmkelly29 on Oct 27, 2009 8:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Looking at the standings, I have to agree...

If not for Detroit, the NFC North would look O.K.
GB & Minn both look decent enough. I don’t know that anybody in the NFC East can beat either of those teams.

Each division has one horrible horrible team in it. Not just bad, but HORRIBLE.
Ugh.

by cmkelly29 on Oct 27, 2009 11:44 AM CDT up reply actions

Do what?

I know the Giants are better than GB, and i’m pretty sure Dallas is as well.

by octoberty on Oct 27, 2009 12:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm a Giants fan, and I'm not sure...

I’m not saying they wouldn’t, or couldn’t beat GB.. because everyone knows Tuck and Umenyiora would have a freakin’ field day against that o-line. However, the pass defense has been horrendous, I don’t feel good about this team.

I think I’m overrating GB a bit though, they’ve had a cake schedule as well w/ Chicago, STL, Cleveland, and Detroit.

by cmkelly29 on Oct 27, 2009 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought they had a chance to cover the spread

they only missed by a field goal, so it wasn’t really unreasonable.

Without Westbrook

they really aren’t

They look better

with Miles Austin. Luckily December is coming, and they will revert to their suck, and Austin will likely get injured.

Damn, SF has the Panthers 1st round pick next year

Now they just need Alex Smith to stop them from having to take a QB

by octoberty on Oct 27, 2009 10:37 AM CDT reply actions

I really hope...

Alex gets a fair shot to see what he can do in the next 10 weeks or so.

I’m not counting on it, but it sure would be nice to see him do well.

If last week was no fluke

SF will have gone from having an extremely boring, run oriented offense to a fairly dynamic offense with very good skill players in about a weeks time.
