Notes for tonight's matchup,
The Good: Pau Gasol is out, look for Dirk to have a big game; The last 7 games have been decided by 7 points or less.
The Bad: The Mavs are 1-6 against the Lakers those last 7 games over the past 2 seasons.
The Ugly: Brendan Haywood and Andray Blatche combined for 27 points and 17 rebounds against the Mavericks fontcourt. Andrew Bynum had 26 points and 13 rebounds against a formidable Clippers frontcourt. Expect Bynum to have a monster game, early foul trouble is the Mavs' only hope.
Keys to victory: The Mavericks have to somehow get Bynum into foul trouble. The Mavs have to somehow hold Kobe under 30. Dirk needs to have a monster game. It would be nice if Shawn Marion could put up a Lamar Odom type line. 3's.. Terry, Kidd, Dirk, and Marion.. pour in the 3's.

Cleveland was off to a fast start
and then when Lebron went to the bench, it went cold fast. Although West’s out, they need bench help if theyr’re going to win it all.

I don't care who it is
As long as it’s not the Miami guy from the 06 Finals or anyone like him.

I love you too
But this probably mean I’m gonna finish last.
I think Luke French has a lot of potential. TORP potential.-Dstar
May be
But he beats me in Mavs broadcasts.

I get to do an awesome write up of Tim Thomas on it soon! Life doesn’t get much better than that.

The guy didn't know Jamison was out tonight
I hate him and the new people they got on there recently. Boo

Maybe
he does take everything personally and shit. He’s just awful. And who the fuck are “Big” and “Brown”?
I think Luke French has a lot of potential. TORP potential.-Dstar
Where do you find a good contributor though?
The cupboard seems awfully bare.
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.
See, I want to contribute cause I want MM to do well
Not saying I’m gonna make it better, but I’ll put in some effort. But with them just bringing random bloggers, like Bagget and “Big” and “Brown”, on board it doesn’t seem like it’ll get better.
I think Luke French has a lot of potential. TORP potential.-Dstar
Wait.
So who the hell put Baggett there? Wasn’t it he had a connection with someone at Blog-a-Bull (one of the best SBN NBA blogs out there) and he got the job without any notifications?
I think he probably tries hard, but his expression frustrates me and all the exclamation marks he tosses in there just pisses me off.

Just started watching,
how’s marion looked?

Good
Ross as well. Dirk’s off so far and Gooden should be cut.

So the experiment lasted that long?
Also, I think we should give the one-time appearance of Rally NVE another try soon enough.

I'd say they could be middle of the East.
They’re got a pretty nice collection of talent.
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.
They should make the playoffs
but I don’t see them as any better than the the third best team in their division: behind Atl and Orlando

half hearted basketball fan
would someone mind breaking down the lesser known guys that will be getting significant minutes this year?
I’ve got a handle on what Kidd, Marion, Nowitzki, Dampier, Terry, Barrea, and Gooden bring to the table, but who are the bit players, and any insight on how this collection is going to fit together would be appreciated.
If there is a good site that has a decent season preview, that would be great.
Thanks, I’d like to get into this season, but I need a little push.

Humphries could be decent a backup. Same with Singleton and Ross. Otherwise, add Howard once he gets back and those should be the main people who play.

Ross is known for being a good defender, got a nice little mid-range jumper, as well. Roddy Beaubois, 2009 1st rounder, is probably the only intriguing player you dont know about. He plays PG, so he’s gonna have a hard time getting on the floor with Kidd, Barea, and Terry ahead of him
frontcourt
who is going to get minutes at the 4 & 5, other than Dirk, Gooden, and Damp? Seems like athletic bigs are going to give this team fits.
Favorite bumper sticker of all time, seen on a VW bus:

Tim Thomas
i’d wager he eats into Gooden’s minutes big time, once he returns, but that’s still 2 or so weeks away. He had his knee scoped towards the end of Sept.
Ugh
I must have missed that. Tim Thomas or Drew Gooden? There’s no option C?

marginal effort by Cuban to keep the playoff runs going
expect one of those marginal teams that limps into the playoff and is one and done.

they need to either hit the jackpot in a trade or go full on sell mode
Cuban himself said just last year that he wouldn’t let ‘this thing’ be middle of the road for more than a year.
They have kind of been in
no mans land for a couple years now. I still don’t understand adding Kidd just so you can limp along.

Yeah, I'm thinking this isn't the year for me to try and work up some interest in keeping up with them
Looking at the collection of talent, just doesn’t seem likely that they do anything but spare their way through the regular season and get blasted out of playoffs in the first round.
I do like Carlisle for some reason though.

I imagine we will finish near the bottom of the league in dunks

The poll was for championship contenders. Right now I would probably put LA and San Antonio ahead of them in the west. I think, that the Mavs had one of their best offseasons in a few years. they added a lot of depth to their bench that will help them a lot during the season. I think that the defense is going to see an improvement over last year. It might take a few weeks to get going (especially with Howard out), but I believe that they will be able to contend this year.
by GregoryM on Oct 28, 2009 7:56 AM CDT up reply actions
You wouldn't know
their defense has improved by watching them last night. Same ol soft Mavericks.

Yeah, the biggest issue wasn't addressed
Which is defending the rim. Good scorers who get to the rim will continue to torch the Mavs.
Yeah, Lebron is great...
the best player in the league imo.
But the Celtics are going to be tough to beat this year. Not only to they have that solid starting five of Rondo, Allen, Pierce, KG, and Perkins, but now they have a really good bench too. Wallace, Daniels, Big Baby (when he gets back from his stupid thumb injury), and House. If they stay healthy I can’t see them being stopped. Of course, Pierce , Allen, and KG aren’t getting any younger. So an injury like last season wouldn’t shock me.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
You can't see LA stopping them?
with a healthy Bynum? the addition of Artest.. scary.
Boston-LA is looking inevitable at this point, and frankly, that’s what I want to see.
The diffence won't make a difference
The Lakers need Bynum to beat the Celtics, they won’t repeat without him, at least not against the Celts
without a healthy Bynum, I agree
Healthy KG, healthy Bynum… You’re gonna get a hell of a series, I really hope it happens.
Last I checked...
you have to get to the Finals to beat another team in the Finals. The Spurs aren’t going to the finals out of the West. Sorry.

They weren't deep enough...
for the Bulls last night.
And look what Boston did to Chicago tonight. The Spurs have a pretty good team, but to say they are too deep for everyone else in the league (especially Boston and LA) is laughable.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Hmm. The Spurs played the second game of a back-to-back after traveling east, while the Celtics had a home game after a day off. That doesn’t show much.
The Celtics and Magic have deep benches. The Spurs have the deepest. Let’s talk again after the New Year when we have a much better idea.
Okay guy...
Finley, Bonner, McDyess, Hill, and Ratliff don’t make your team “deep.” Those guys are a bunch of spares.
You have Manu coming off the bench and nothing else. I don’t need to wait ’til after the New Year to have a better idea. Nice try.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
I can tell
that you really know the Spurs. Bonner and Finley are actually starting right now, though that will change depending on the opponent. The rest of the roster: Blair, Bogans, Ginobili, Hairston, Haislip, Hill, Mahinmi, Mason, McDyess, Ratliff. They can’t dress them all for every game, but almost all of them will get decent minutes depending on matchups. The second team will usually overwhelm the second unit of other teams. You will see…
Oh...
Bonner and Finley are starting then. Well that makes them even worse then I thought. Are you kidding me? You think that list of no-names makes them deep? You are a serious Spurs homer. I guess I will see, when they are a 5 seed in the West and get bounced in the 1st round.
You may know the Spurs, but saying they are the deepest team in the league means you know jack shit about the other 29 teams. Again, nice try.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Because
All you contribute is random Spurs homerdom.

The Bobcats suck
They built a 20 point lead on the Knicks in the first quarter by running them to death then decided to play half court the rest of the game, now it’s a 2 point game in the 4th.
I think Luke French has a lot of potential. TORP potential.-Dstar
so i'm thinking
typical mavs performance in la. play extremely well. lead most of the game. lose at the end.
Not a big deal
Still good looks. I’m more concerned with the boards and ball control. Still, they look decent right now.

Love me some Josh Smith
Smith’s first block gave him 900 on his career, pushing him past Shaquille O’Neal as the youngest player in league history to hit that number. He didn’t shoot a three tonight and hit his free throws. Don’t look now, but Smith is off to a very hot start this year.

but anyway
impressive defense. bynum looks like a beast and we shut him down. odom seems like he should give teams matchup problems and we controlled him.
would like to see how this team does against fast/young guards though.

Kidd, Terry, Howard, Marion, Dirk

Added coach Rick Carlisle: “We always take it personally when we get our ass kicked. And that’s unfortunately been part of our personality the last year and a half and it’s something we’re trying to correct. We’re doing things to get in the habit of playing hard and persistently on the defensive end.”
I love Carlisle.
Win with D
this is new. That Dirk strip is beastly.
I think Luke French has a lot of potential. TORP potential.-Dstar
Indeed.
It’s gotten better every year.
Marion is going to be a huge deal for us this year, I think. I’m loving the fact that he’s not even taking any jumpers at this point—it’s all floaters and dunks, plus some disruptive D.
They do...
but Marion is a huge boost to their defense.
I think they will have trouble, like you say, at the center spot defensively. As well as with teams that have a really good and quick PG.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Ross will help with the latter
And if the Clippers continue to blow dick, don’t rule out a trade for one of their Big 3 Centers.
Jeff Green is slowly pulling me in
I may go ahead and make the switch from being a Mavs fan to being an OKC fan.
I would've been so hyped if the Mavs had gotten him in the draft...
Still, Roddy B’s been curing any draft-day disappointments.
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.
If Gallinari stays healthy, he's gonna be a beast
I saw him a little last year, watching him right now, he’s confident. Very bullish on him.
Yep. He can ball
That release… He can get his shot off on anybody. Like you said, if that back surgery has no ill effects, look out.
