Over the first three seasons of his contract with Anaheim, Matthews has been worth -$5.3 million in salary. That minus sign is not a typo. Given his performance relative to the value that could have been found by playing any random Triple-A guy instead, Matthews owes the Angels $5.3 million for taking wins off the board.

Dumb question but does that -$5.3 MM take into account playing time?

Regardless, that was one dumb contract. Maybe the Angels are the new Yankees – they can sign a Pavano and not really miss a step.

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

Athough at least Pavano had the decency to get injured and not take up a spot

Yes.

The “replacement” column in WAR is playing time.

Note that Dave made a typo — GMJ has actually been “worth” -$6.3M.

Wouldn’t he actually owe them the $5.3M + the $25M he has collected in salary?

It'd have to be someone

with real good bat control, maybe Vlad.

Haha

So if GMJ suddenly wimps out, Vlad would still slice him.

Someone tell Jim Reeves

From his April 2007 column (thanks to AJM for clipping this previously):

“Tom Hicks flew in here from Liverpool, England, on Monday, presumably with the $10 million he saved by not re-signing Gary Matthews Jr. this past off-season jingling around in his pocket with a few extra British pounds in his loose change.
What the Angels got for their $10 million was Matthews’ usual spectacular defense in center field and a three-game sweep of the Rangers to open the season.

I’ll let you figure out who got the best end of the deal.

  • * *

Suddenly, the $50 million the Angels will pay Matthews over the next five years doesn’t seem quite so extravagant."

The sad thing is, I have to disagree with Cameron on GMJ's future playing time

Somebody like the Royals, White Sox or Reds will probably pick him up and give him 100+ games. He just won’t be making no 10 million per year ever again…

Uhh

He’s still owed $23M over the next two years…

declining players and bad contracts are hard to stomach

let’s hope we don’t make that mistake with Byrd.

let Byrd fly far away, far away from here.

Why are Ranger fans criticizing Angel management?

They’ve made the playoffs all three years GMJ has been with the Angels.

"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"

by Josey Wales on Oct 28, 2009 1:22 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

And clearly that's because of GMJ...

Um....

Because they made a dumb move. Just like I can criticize the Rangers when they do something dumb.
