Wednesday morning Rangers things
The Rangers interviewed Rusty Greer yesterday for the position of hitting coach, the first of what is thought to be interviews with eight potential candidates. I don't really have an opinion on any of them.
Matt Harrison was back on the mound yesterday, for the AFL Surprise Rafters, and says he's feeling good and wants to get his innings in. Harrison, coming back from Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, seems like to start 2010 in AAA, given his struggles in 2009 and the time he missed, but I suspect that, if he does, he'll be the pitcher most likely to be brought up if someone in the rotation struggles or goes down.
Richard Durrett talks about the middle relief options for the Rangers in 2010, along with their setup options.

Why no Greerg?

if we have eyre and/or madrigal in our as middle relievers
ie..for the 6th or 7th innings, we didn’t do enough in the offseason. i think Mathis should have the inside track among those Durrett mentions although Mathis and Eyre were both mentioned in his article regarding long relievers. I’m just not a fan of Eyre. The only difference betwen the two articles was Strop in place of Nippert.
The bullpen without any acquisitions as of now may be Nippert, Mathis, Strop, O’Day, CJ, FX2 and a lefty that we need to sign or use AJ Murray/Harrison in the role. Of course, alot of this depends on whether Feliz/McCarthy are in the rotation or not. I think we need to sign a couple arms for the bullpen, possibly the lefty and a low-risk NRI like Benoit etc..
Bullpens are probably the most unpredictable position, and I think we need to make at least a couple signings when the market starts to play itself out. I know some don’t think we should spend money on relievers because they can’t be counted on year in and year out, but that’s the point. Can we count on CJ, O’Day and FX2 being as good as they were last year? We need quality depth in ‘pen for this reason. FX2 battled injuries last year, CJ is inconsistent from year to year and is going to prepare as a starter (which I do not like – it is better to prepare for the ’pen as that is where he is best suited to be), and I’m not a fan banking on sidearm pitchers like O’Day repeating their success— see Ziegler.
The ’pen was looked on as a weakness to start last year, and it ended up being a strength with the performances of the main 3 anchoring it, but there are holes that need to be filled and possible contingencies for which we should prepare. The waiver wire is probably not the best place to find it this year.

Who said CJ
is “going to prepare as a starter”?

Its been multiple places.

Not quite
I thought they only discussed the possibility with him. That’s different than he is going to prepare as a starter.

And it was probably at CJ's request
He said in the past that he would be willing to go down to AAA to build up his arm strength. I wonder if he would still do that on a split contract? :)

I think the plan is for him to prepare for spring training
as a starter. I doubt he is going to AAA.

The bullpen I expect to see
Frankie, C.J., O’Day, LOOGY, Feliz, Nippert, Mathis
We could have Eyre, Moscoso, or a vet NRI instead of Feliz.
by Adam J. Morris on Oct 28, 2009 10:05 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
who would you have the Rangers sign
as the LOOGY? Would you have the Rangers make any other acquisitions?
Strop could use more time in AAA, and makes for a nice arm to call up. I think that same situation would apply if we signed another arm as well. For some reason, I’m worried about this ‘pen. I don’t know why. It must be my ‘gut.’

by NothinG on Oct 28, 2009 10:16 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
So are you gonna be this winters version of Clark from last year?
Strop needs more time in AAA no doubt. Probably a good 6 weeks at least. AJ Murray isn’t a LOOGY. At least last time I looked he had similar splits as Eddie did in that he was better against righties than lefties.
We have plenty of options for the pen that we don’t need to spend much money on that position. Guys like Strop, Eyre (who’s not been that bad actually), Moscoso all starting in AAA to be used when someone gets hurt or we need an extra arm
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

Pens tend to be variable
The fact that this group was good last year is no guarantee they’ll be good this coming year, so I can understand being worried about the pen. At the same time, given what we have in place, I don’t know that there’s a need to go out and moneywhip a reliever.
I think that, if you don’t have Feliz in the pen, you could really use a righty power arm, and Moscoso, Madrigal or Strop are all guys who could potentially fill that role. Scheppers is also an option at some point in 2010, I think.
As for who the LOOGY is, I don’t know. But I do think that you could use a Brian Shouse type out there.
by Adam J. Morris on Oct 28, 2009 10:27 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
LOOGY is always unpredictable
Texas will invite about 3 guys on NRIs, and maybe actually sign one guy for real. Someone will step up in ST, another will show enough to go to AAA, knowing he’ll get to Arlington in a while.
Go Rice Owls!

and one of those NRIs
will probably outpitch some 5 million a year reliever.

I think moneywhipping relievers
is about the worst possible way to spend money. Look at Juan Cruz. He was pretty much a steaming pile of shit for KC this year.
Most reliever stats are essentially nothing but SSS, and the list of relievers who sucked one year but are good in another year and vice versa is pretty long.
Unless you are going to pick up a Mariano Riveira in his prime, you are most likely just pissing money away.

Was Juan Cruz "moneywhipped"?
by Adam J. Morris on Oct 28, 2009 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
As it turns out
he was overpaid at $3 million because he even if he was paid major league minimum, he still sucked value out of the Royals.
WXRL -.012, -1.3 ARP. He was a replacement level reliever.

I think there is a difference...
….between “moneywhipping” someone and paying someone a reasonable amount and having them ultimately not perform, in the first year of the contract, up to the level that they are being paid.
by Adam J. Morris on Oct 28, 2009 10:57 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
$3 million
is moneywhipping most journeyman type relievers. Cruz certainly fits that category.
Its like spending 3-4 million on a guy like Ben Broussard.

Don't overlook the supplemental draft pick that figures into what signing Cruz cost
I don’t know if Christopher Owings will be a successful ML’er or not, but that pick would have looked better in KC than in Arizona if you’re a Royals fan.

Juan Cruz was a very, very good reliever prior to last season
by Adam J. Morris on Oct 28, 2009 12:12 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
For a couple years.
Wasn’t worth much 3 or 4 years ago when he was with Oakland.
Like most relievers, it’s a year to year proposition.
