OT - sale of Rangers compared to sale of Cubs

This is the timeline for the Cubs sale.
April 2, 2007 – Tribune announced assets for sale at end of season.
Aug 2009 – sales agreement with Ricketts reached.
Oct 2009 – MLB approves of the sale
Oct 27, 2009 – sale becomes official

Granted, the Cubs sale involved far more assets, like Wrigley Field and some of Comcast, and the bankruptcy. But it’s still interesting to see how long it took.

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

You guys should have listened to the lineups being announced (radio)

At the stadium they played music from Star Wars while announcing the lineups. For the Phillies they used Empire music and for the Yankees they used Rebel music. I don’t know if it was a joke (if so, well done) or if they were trying to convince people that, no, the Yankees are not the Evil Empire – they’re just the scrappy Rebelion.

it's on ABC right now...

it’s a sit com about an extended family….the guy that used to play Ted Bundy is the patriarch. He married this young hot hispanic chick with a 10 year old son. One of his kids the daughter—the hot girl from the old “Ed” show I believe (the lawyer in Alaska running his office out of the bowling alley). Ted Bundy’s other son is gay and he and his partner just adopted a baby from the Phillipines. It’s about all their interactions.

Very funny. Very “Office-like” I’ve also heard people say it’s like 30 Rock, but I haven’t really watched that show.

by studcrackers on Oct 28, 2009 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions

It's 3 years

But his salary goes up from 6.5 mil this year to 11.5 in the next two, and for some reason they gave him a no-trade clause.

He was really good this year, but that’s mainly because he posted a career-high ISO about 90 points higher than his career average – probably not something he’ll do again, even in that park. Plus, as mentioned below, he had a poor second half.

But they basically got a career year out of him this year, and if the Phils win the ‘Series, I suppose you could argue it was worth it even if he does regress in the next two years. Doesn’t make it a historical FA signing though.

I can’t tell, but I think they still have to do something about their defense. They have plenty of cap space to do it, too, if their owner weren’t flat broke. It’s something to watch a host of genuinely talented forwards, though.

by Brett Perryman on Oct 28, 2009 9:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I think they're pretty good.

James Neal is by far the best player on the ice every game. It’s incredible to watch.

I think they’ll need to improve that defense at some point too. I don’t know how they go about it though. I would like to think they can improve on Niskanen, Woywitka, and Daley. I like Grossman, Robidas, and Fistric long term, but that isn’t much offense. Vishnevskiy appears to suck. Philip Larsen I think will be really good, but that’s probably 2 years down the road.

I just hope they don’t do something stupid like trade for Tomas Kaberle. I hope they spend the money, just not on that guy.

by Josh Lile on Oct 28, 2009 9:51 PM CDT up reply actions

he's 22

He netted 24 goals as a rookie last year. He’s big, he’s fast, and he’s insanely talented.

My favorite thing to watch these days is when Neal has the puck (or steals it?) in the offensive zone and makes a power move to the net. It’s impressive to see.

Meh

Doesn’t really matter one way or the other.

by Adam J. Morris on Oct 28, 2009 10:25 PM CDT up reply actions

And their are Rangers implications

If Yankees lose, they overspend on free agents the Rangers won’t sign anyways because of the ownership situation. Which means the Rangers have the tiniest chance of signing someone the Yankees would have after the 2010 season.

by Mark from OC on Oct 28, 2009 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions

It doesn't matter because...

…if we assume Rollins wasn’t going to get the runner, then throwing the ball away or not doesn’t make any difference to whether the Phillies will win or lose.

You can find 50 ex football players who make great, charismatic commentators, but Kruk, Bobby Valentine, Dave Winfield, they’re all pretty retarded as commenters.
