Other Rangers Q's
Tim (Dallas)
Scheppers or Crow? (assume both remain healthy)
Jim Callis (2:16 PM)
If you can guarantee health, I’d take Scheppers. But if you can’t, I’d take Crow.
Nick (Seattle)
Who was a higher rated prospect, Felix Hernandez or Neftali Feliz?
Jim Callis (2:43 PM)
King Felix.
Jeff (Dayton)
Martin Perez, Casey Kelly, or Matt Moore. Highest ceiling? Highest probability of success?
Jim Callis (2:50 PM)
Perez has the highest ceiling. I’ll say Kelly has the highest probability, because he has the best feel for pitching.
Daniel (SF)
lightning round: Madison Bumgarner or Derek Holland?
Jim Callis (2:51 PM)
Bumgarner.

I'm surprised that he thinks Perez has less of a feel for pitching than Kelly.
I always thought Perez was far ahead of other prospects in his pitching IQ.

I think it is one of those things
to where Callis probably thinks both have very high IQs but maybe just favors Kelly slightly

If Kelly had a high IQ then
he wouldn’t be fucking around with SS.

PITCHING IQ like when only when he is on the mound. Generally speaking, you are probably right though ha

But I would think
that by the time Perez is that age he’ll have at least as good a feel for pitching as Kelly.

I'm surprised he thinks he has the highest upside

who would you say has the highest upside?
Fuck Mike Estabrook

I think it’s pretty much a toss-up among all three, but I’m more surprised that Callis says Perez on the upside because I know he’s a huge fan of Kelly.

Might as well make that trio a quartet... add Scheppers.
I doubt there’s a better quartet.

Scheppers
I think he’s pretty clearly a notch below the other 3.

Are we now getting to a point where Scheppers' health concerns are being overblown?
I wonder. Granted, the guy had a sizeable red flag in last year’s draft, but the experts say he’s fine now. Meanwhile, we all fret about the health and bring it up every time his name is mentioned as if he’s Rich Harden/Brandon McCarthy-esque, suffering injury after injury.
I think we may now be in a place where we’re worrying too much about what very well could turn out to be a one time injury.

Is that based upon health concerns?

Interesting comment from Trip
Little known fact… Pitchers don’t need intact labrums to pitch. Most pitchers are already pitching with a torn labrum, and nearly all adult pitchers have a frayed labrum.
A torn labrum only becomes a problem when it leads to a loss of range of motion or [chronic] biceps tendinitis. A torn labrum doesn’t really heal itself because the tissue isn’t very vascular in nature; less blood flow = slow or non-existant healing.
Rehab and mechanical adjustments are always preferred to surgery because surgery wrecks the rotator cuff. Shockingly atrophied and scarred rotator cuffs are easily torn when pitchers do too much, too soon while building their arms back up.
Scheppers reportedly cleaned up his mechanics after his injury, and there have been zero reports of problems since then.

So, I guess the big mystery is at what point does a torn labrum reduce range of motion or cause bicep tendinitis.
But, there seems to be some connection between scarred/atrophied rotator cuffs and torn labrums that’s hinted at but not fully explained in his post.

i tore my labrum
in april, i dont feel 100%. 90-95, dont think i’ll ever get to 100.

I was referring to the surgery required to repair a labrum.
They go through the rotator cuff to get to it. This leads to scar tissue in the rotator cuff.
After surgery, complete immobilzation is recommended for up to 4 weeks.
Between the scarring and the immobilization, the rotator cuff can easily become a problem after labrum surgery. This isn’t always the case, of course.

Ah. Thanks.
BTW, can’t wait until you have a chance to break down Scheppers pitching motion.

Can't wait to see Neftali Perez
It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

Gotta be joking.
Gracchus (about Obama): I think he knows what America is. America is the mob. Conjure money for them and they'll be distracted. Take away their freedom and still they'll roar. The beating heart of America is not the paper of the Constitution, it's the power of the media. He'll bring them debt - and they will love him for it.
