Why would he leave just as his team is getting good?
Especially to go to that mess up there? I didn’t know Jeff Miller was getting into fiction writing. As far as his first futuristic story goes, I give it two thumbs down.

Money and prestige?
I would imagine that the Mets pay more than the Rangers and that if you win with the Mets you will get talked about a lot more.
Don’t think it happens, but its not fully unreasonable.
What do voluntary mean?

Well
You’ve got a team in the country’s biggest market — which is also where he’s from — and that has much, much more in the way of resources that it give to the g.m.

We've seen JD with a win-now plan
it results in Adam Eaton and Brandon McCarthy. This is just wild, sports radio-type speculation. For one, I don’t think JD is a hot enough commodity to worry about someone stealing him away. The only way he leaves is if the Rangers tank and he’s fired. And then he’s even less a hot commodity.

Yeah that was his first year as the GM
If you really think JD would make those same deals now you are blind to how much hes changed and how much better the Rangers have gotten in his tenure

Beginning with the off-season before 2007 (his 3rd as GM of the team so the learning curve should have been over)
he spent nearly 1/3 of his allotted small market payroll during those three years – $ 70 million – on VPadilla, Frankie Cat, Lofton, Gagne, JJennings and Broussard.
Remember, the Rangers spent somewhere close to $ 200 million in payroll from 2007-2009.
How did that work out? Lots of mediocre performances but we still have a 4th OF in Murphy and a couple of fading minor league prospects the best I can tell.
Then you add in all the ill-fated trades/long-term consequences, one year of winning baseball, the way the fans turned their back on the team en masse along with the hiring of Ron Washington and I think you’re going to have a difficult time convincing anybody that this is one of the good young GMs in MLB muchless ready for the spotlight and pressure of NYC.
I know it’s a slow news day for Ranger fans but trust me, we have much more pressing issues to worry about than losing JD to the NY Mets.

Boy am I glad he got Gagne and Lofton.
How great did that work out for us?!!!! Nice work, JD.

Beginning with the off-season before 2007 (his 3rd as GM of the team so the learning curve should have been over)
Simply in the interest of accuracy, in light of the fact that Daniels became the Rangers GM in Oct of 2005, wouldn’t it be more accurate to report that in the off-season BEFORE 2007, that Daniels had just completed his FIRST year as the GM? If you agree, that would seem to render the reference to it being his 3rd as GM, as an inaccurate statement.

I can agree with most of this post
I don’t think JD’s resume would bowl over a large market team at this point.
I feel like he is doing a good job here, but the positive bullet points on his resume right now, probably aren’t the things that a team like the Mets would be looking for.

That just makes his case for staying here all the stronger
He’s built it up, why wouldn’t he want to see it through? I’m sure he could get more money out of the Mets, but he’d pretty much have to start all over, with an impatient owner again. It would be a go-buy-us-a-team situation, which isn’t his M.O. It’s been a slow build, but it’s starting to bear fruit.

Do you really believe that JD is viewed as an up n’ comer hot rising star by the inner circle of major league front offices?

I believe he's viewed as a good young g.m.
I don’t know that you can call anyone who has pretty much reached the top job in his profession “an up n’ comer hot rising star.”

What has JD specifically done that
would qualify him as a “good young GM” in the eyes of other major league FO’s?
I would have viewed Billy Beane circa ‘99, Theo ’03 and I can’t remember the Dallas kid (Freedman/Silverberg) who runs Tampa as “up n comer rising stars.”

He made a decent haul when he traded Tex
but he had to give up a Hall of Fame player in his prime with 1.5 years left on his contract and find a GM who didn’t care about the long-term future to do so.
The Rangers became the number one minor league system (something that’s voted on) on his watch but he also took over a team with AG, Kinsler, Danks, CJ and Eddy V in the cupboard and knocking on the major league door.
I was honestly wondering what other teams would have seen him accomplish in Texas that would make him such a hot commodity.

If I promise to do nothing but say thank you for your answer
will you write exactly why you think other major league front offices view JD as “a good young GM”?

you already know the answer to your stupid troll-baiting question.
You simply refuse to accept that answer. It’s been given to you numerous times here by many different posters.

comment on his answer other than to say thank you.

Other GM point
is really moot if you think about it. So he found a GM that didn’t particularly care about the future of that franchise. Good deal, are you expecting him to go to war with Brian Cashman, Theo Epstein (done that) or Ned Colletti just to say he’s done it? Regardless of who the counterpart is, the goal is to come out better as an organization than the other guy.
To lump the good moves together and “blame” them on a crappy counter-GM yet point out the bad moves name by name (that are over 3 years old now) is pretty pointed and subjective. How’s Edinson Volquez doing lately anyway? About as good as Hamilton? Not sure that holding JD over the coals for that is all too valid.

Because there's not much point
I could list some things, and you’ll talk about Danks and Soriano and Gonzalez and Young and a pile of garbage on someone’s front lawn and dogshit on someone’s cleats and money spent on Ben Broussard and Nolan Ryan implementing massive change, and I’m not interested in going through all that again.

Who says the team will perform to the level that will motivate the owners to extend JDs contract?
But even if the team does really well, maybe the Mets can pay him double, and, besides, JD is from that area.

not liking a story and not liking what it has to say. Sometimes baseball teams with legitimate owners in giant markets come in and swipe talent from also rans partially owned my MLB.

We also sent them TAG
and Ken Henderson for Jon Matlack in the same trade that brought us Al Oliver.
We picked up Willie Montanez for Ed Lynch and Mike Jorgensen.
And we also sent them Ron Darling & Walt Terrell for Lee Mazzilli (ouch).

Couldn't figure out how Oliver factored in so I went to look it up and ... WOW what a crazy deal
December 8, 1977: Traded as part of a 4-team trade by the Pittsburgh Pirates with Nelson Norman to the Texas Rangers. The Atlanta Braves sent Willie Montanez to the New York Mets. The Texas Rangers sent Tommy Boggs, Adrian Devine and Eddie Miller to the Atlanta Braves. The Texas Rangers sent a player to be named later and Tom Grieve to the New York Mets. The Texas Rangers sent Bert Blyleven to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The New York Mets sent Jon Matlack to the Texas Rangers. The New York Mets sent John Milner to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Texas Rangers sent Ken Henderson (March 15, 1978) to the New York Mets to complete the trade.
