well the article suggests

…they’re thinking about trading Bradley for Wells. I thought Wells was a free agent this year, though?

Wells

He’s 2 years into a 7 year, $126 million deal.

wow

is that the worst deal in baseball right now or what? GMJ and his 2 yrs left at 23M is another

Wells and Soriano

Probably the two worst right now.

Soriano

hit 40/40 at the perfect time.

that would be funny

if Wells and Soriano ended up on the same team. That would be great for Cubs fans to continue to wallow in self pity.

as bad, and untradeable as this contract is

Young’s value ‘based on fangraphs’ has always exceeded what his salary is. This year was the same. We’ll see how it turns out over the next couple of years, but considering what Young has done with the Rangers, a couple years paying him more than his value would not be a big deal. If MY has another year like last year, though, the contract could actually be fair, based on “perceived” values of course.

i guess

we have MY’s contract for 4 more years through 2013. The last couple years of the contract are going to be bad. We have alot of young, affordable talent on this team, and what looks like a continued flow of talent that should come over the next few years that should keep our payroll reasonable, even if we do add a couple more high dollar FAs. We have the money to spend, and I don’t think MY’s contract should weigh us down considering how low we are on the salary spectrum right now. I would like to see our payroll in the upper 80’s. That most likely won’t happen.

No where close

As bad as his contract is, his 2009 and likely decline from this point forward don’t make him that horribly overpaid over the next few years. Soriano, Wells, and GMJ are playing like below replacement level players while getting many more millions than a replacement player should get. Jose Guillen probably also deserves to be in that group.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

agree

If the Rays wanted to give him away in a salary dump deal, I think he’d be a pretty good fit for what we need.

I know its still a bit early

but I’m just trying to figure out what I think we are going to do in FA this year.

It really seems like its all based on what the Rangers think of Borbon. If they think he’s a ready or nearly ready CF then we probably go get a 1b/DH type, think Thome/Johnson/Glaus, or if hes not we go back with some thing like Byrd or Cameron, which wouldn’t leave the ABs to want to pick up a full time 1b/DH unless you assume that both Davis and Smoak won’t be getting any time with the MLB team this year.

As far as pitchers go, I wouldn’t mind seeing Lackey in here, but I think that its more likely we add a couple of BP arms and call it a day.

What do voluntary mean?

by JKolar on Oct 31, 2009 10:44 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I'd like a DH and

a 1 year pickup at CF, and a starter.

I’ll be upset if we waste money and draft picks on bullpen arms.

Yep. DH is highest priority. I think the starter will have to come from a trade.

Just say no to FA bullpen arms and BOTR guys, ie “veterans”.

Yeah

Ive always thought bullpen arms and borps are positions best filled by young pitchers who are cheap and effective.

I mostly agree

but I’d like to see Grabow in here on a one or two year deal. They need someone to compliment Ceej.

by egriffey on Oct 31, 2009 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, me too.

That’s the only bullpen arm I think I would target though. Also depending on what they do with Feliz we might need to add another power righty type of guy. If worse came to worst though, I think both of those spots could be filled internally with guys like Harrison/Nippert but the thought of that doesn’t get me very excited.

Jimmy Johnson for GM.

Strop could also be the power arm guy

Scheppers will probably get a look at the role late in the year, much like Feliz this year

by NothinG on Oct 31, 2009 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

True if Strop can get his command down.

His mechanics, particularly the way he snaps his arm scares the hell out of me.

You really think Scheppers will move that quickly though? I mean if he’s as good as advertised (and I think he is, talent was never the issue with him) then maybe he’d be an option at some point next season. I just can’t wait for this world series that I could care less about to get over with so we can get on with the off-season, that’s all I know. Lots of questions to be answered.

I would think the difference in Borbon and Morgan

is pretty insignificant compared to the prospect you’d have to give up to get Morgan.

by NothinG on Oct 31, 2009 6:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, if you're gonna trade for Nyjer Morgan

I’d be assuming that it’s because you consider him your long-term solution in CF, and plan to trade Borbon.

Which I could probably get behind, because Morgan is about the same player as Borbon offensively, but with excellent UZR #’s and an apparent canoon for an arm (best OF arm in the majors this year by Fangraphs Outield Arm Runs Above Average metric).

Being really good at catching/throwing >> hitting lefties

And Borbon ain’t exactly Jayson Werth when it comes to hitting lefties.

I wouldn't make that trade-off

Unless you are that worried about sticking Borbon in CF in the short run. Morgan is turning 30 next July. You’re not trading for some star on the rise with Morgan. You’re trading for a pretty risky player based mostly on what he has done in 120 games this past season. Defense like everything else will regress over the long run. With Morgan, I do think its reasonable to see a drop in his UZR next season given how high it was this season. Over a full season, you just don’t see many UZRs of near 30 runs.

As for offense, bringing him to the AL could be a mistake. Like Borbon, Morgan is a guy who you hope to get a .300 BA from with enough SBs to make up for the lack of power and average walk rates. The difference between the two though is that Borbon as a 22 year old rookie already looks like he’s going to give you much more power than Morgan will.

Clint Hurdle will never be the Rangers hitting coach.

He’s JDs guy, and Nolan isn’t gonna let JD kill the franchise just as it’s getting good.

I mean, Nolan loves Hurdle, who hit Ryan really well, and JD better not eff this up.

That’s the best impersonation I can do in one minute on a Saturday morning. I can’t really choose on merit, so I would say that I would like the Rangers to hire Clint Hurdle, because I like his name. Rusty has a good name, but I’d hate to see my happy memories of Rusty get tarnished should the offense underperform.
