Man it's freakin' tough this week...

I honestly don’t feel good about anything.

by cmkelly29 on Oct 4, 2009 11:36 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess if I had to make 2 bets this week.. I like New Orleans -7 at home against the Jets.

The Jets are a damn good team, but they’ll be missing Lito Sheppard and Donald Strickland against that Saints passing attack. I’m not sold on the Jets offense yet. Mark Sanchez has made a few mistakes that other D’s haven’t taken advantage of, and in the process have made him look untouchable. NO’s D, although not that great, will make you pay for mistakes. They’re aggressive.

I’ll also take TB +7 @ Washington, if for no other reason than I don’t believe Washington can beat anybody (even Josh Johnson on the road) by more than a TD.

I also don't want to screw you out of money...

so be warned, I don’t feel comfortable with ANY pick this week.

those were my top 2 picks as well

for exactly the same reasons.

KC vs NVG?

Buf -2 = best pick

Miami starting Henne. Also Dallas minus 3 is almost a surefire lock. Those two along with the Giants one are pretty good bets

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

Yes, he is

And he’s a crybaby, who Mack Brown coddled the whole time he was at UT, and who completely melted down when faced with adversity in the pros.

Of course, Fisher didn’t want him in the first place…the football people in Tennessee got overruled by Bud Adams, who wanted to take Young in large part because it would be a big Eff-you to the city of Houston.

I wouldn't have taken him in the first round.

He was that poor mechanically and mentally.

I have to agree.

I would have taken Reggie Bush, D’Brickashaw Ferguson, or AJ Hawk with the first pick.

Man, remember how much heat Houston took for drafting Mario Williams first, over Reggie Bush and Vince Young?

Matt Leinart or Jay Cutler.. I remember Chris Mortenson saying Cutler would ultimately be the best QB in the class. I was sold.

As crappy as it is having Jerry Jones own my favorite team, at least I’m not a Raiders fan.

If you’re a Raiders fans, you pretty much have to just wait for Al Davis to die.

Davis and Mike Brown have to be the two worst owners in the NFL, and I can’t think of anyone else who would make it close.

Kiper, et al

kind of ripped the Johnson pick too at the time, too. I remember not really knowing anything about him other than that he was fast, but it was strange watching his amazing highlight reel as they ripped the pick.

I don’t know that there is a lesson to be learned there, but it is interesting how it all worked out. Stewart and Jones show a lot of potential but can’t stay on the field. Mendenhall appears to be a moron, and Johnson is amazing. Will be interesting to see what Mendenhall does with his chance tonight.

I responded with
“The Browns are a bad, bad, bad team. However, that Cincy squad likes to play to the level of their opponents. Derek Anderson can stretch the field, unlike Brady Quinn. I think Cincy will ultimately win… but it will not shock me if Cleveland steals this one.”

CHICAGO – Detroit Lions rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford had his right knee wrapped after he twisted it during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears.

The Lions had a third down at the Bears 6 when Stafford twisted his leg as he was sacked for an 11-yard loss by Adewale Ogunleye.

That forced Detroit to kick a field goal, which cut Chicago’s lead to 34-24 with 8:15 left. Daunte Culpepper replaced Stafford on the Lions’ next possession.

but those 2 guys did a nice job on that play. Carpenter with penetration and Jenkins finishing off the tackle.

Next time on the field, third and long, and the TE just runs through through a Carpenter tackle. I’ve actually held off on being too critical of him, but I’ve pretty much had it with him.

this is eeirly similar

to that pittsburgh game last year. cowboys seem like they have been in control of the game for the most part but they can’t pull away. you just have this horrible feeling something bad will happen late. i remember they even had a huge 4th and 1 goaline stand late in the game

by selppuc on Oct 4, 2009 5:30 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

You know

I was watching the game, and got irritated because Michael Jenkins decided to stand there and play referee and indicate no catch rather than touch Brandon Marshall down, when Marshall made the catch then got back up.

I watch some Rangers, flip back over later, and see Jenkins waving his hands back and forth again, this time saying that the Broncos didn’t make a first down on the 4th and 1.

Really?

This is a typical Jerry Jones Cowboy team.

Some talent, but completely undisciplined, with stupid coaching, and going to end up 8-8 or 9-7, just good enough for Jerry to decide that one or two key moves this offseason will get him over the top.

I’m ready for some really shitty 4-12 seasons, in the hopes that he’ll break down and get a real football man in charge here, like he did with Parcells for a couple of years, before running him off.

Yep

Jerry decided he’d rather go 8-8 every year and get to treat the Cowboys like his own personal plaything than let someone who knows football run the team.

So Parcells went somewhere where he could run the show. Not surprising.

Jerry is an egomaniac who has made it clear that when it comes to the Cowboys, he is the MFIC. Which is why I find it so moronic when people suggest that Cowher or someone like that is going to come here after the season.

He’ll fire Wade, flirt with some big names, and promote Garrett or go hire some other nutless wonder like Wade, and go 7-9 or 8-8, and the Jerryphiles will continue to blame Ed Werder or Roger Goodell or the refs or anyone else for the team’s inability to succeed.

First of all...

…I’m not a liberal.

Second of all, I’m about 15 years older than you.

Third, it isn’t a “conspiracy,” it is the fact that Jerry Jones wants to treat the Cowboys like his own personal toy.

Why was Parcells talking to the Giants and looking to leave? Because he wanted to go somewhere where the owner would let him do his job, which wasn’t happening here.

by Adam J. Morris on Oct 4, 2009 6:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

And theyve done better the past few seasons than many teams around the league run by “real football men” or whatever illogical BS you believe in, tooth fairy type of stuff.

I wonder where “real football men” live in the offseason.. is there a place they are grown or what?

What do you have to do to be a real football man? 13-3 and 9-7 dont make it? Or they only make it if your title is Gm and not owner?

And nobody else liked Parcells when he was here, and Wade has had more success than Parcells 4 lousy years anyway.

He can stay down there and suck in Miami, although he doesnt do ANYTHING in Miami anyway, at all, so I’m not sure why theyre considered his team.

JJ has had a lot of success the last few seasons with the Cowboys, and a good deal more than the Texans who were run in the “right” way according to AJM.

But of course AJM is the ultimate hindsighter, if a team wins, it’s because real football people run it, if the Coboys lose, it’s because JJ ruined it. However if the Cowboys win, it’s always going to be because secrety behind the scenes, JJ let some real football man take control. However, AJM is never going to make a predictions about the future, all that he says is only in hindsight so he can claim he is correct always.

At least I’ll sit there and make a few forward predictions that may not look to make sense based on talent..

No

It isn’t.

The team is 13-3 and 9-7 the last two years. Thats not a team with a problem at all, period. A team by average should go .500. You do better than that, you are better than average.

Thats another thing I really hate about Cowboys fans, if the team doesnt win the SB every year, it sucks. It’s not only not a good team, it’s the worst team in the NFL.

No

But, I judge success in a reasonable way, did the team compete for a playoff berth, make the playoffs, go 9-7 or better? Those are what make for entertaining seasons. Where you can point to many games in the season as big games, that you as a fan got psyched for because you were competing for something, as opposed to being 5-11.

The biggest thing by far is making the playoffs, and even having a chance to make the playoffs to keep the regular season interesting all the way through. Winning a playoff game is fairly irrelevant to me as a success metric in general. I’d like to see it happen now to shut the media up.

Ouch

What a brutal loss.

Here’s why I’m pissed, why in the HELL wasnt the clock stopped on Roy Williams curl at the 10 on that last drive? He walked out of bounds and the refs kept the clock running. So we had to use the last time out.

I thought that kinda cost us the game.

I’m guessing they somehow gave him forward progress and so stopped the clock right there..like that friggen yard of forward progress even mattered.

Commentators didn’t even mention it, but it was a big call imo. I kinda knew we were gonna lose after that. If the clock had stopped there the odds would have been a lot better.

Who needs their #1 receiver in the last minute of the game? That’s ok, Roy, you just stand there and nurse your achy vagina.

Neftali Feliz says sit your 5 dollar ass down before he makes change...

Hi, Keith. Is this the year Edinson Volquez finally wins RoY?

Wow. The Cowboys are really not good.

The gameplan was horrible.

The o-line took most of the game off.

And Romo couldn’t throw an accurate pass from the pocket if his gutless life depended on it.

Once again they are going to be nothing more than a group of underachievers.

But at least they have a nice new stadium. Yay, Jerry!

Yeah, it's the worst team ever

Till the next week when they win, gutless dumb typical Cowboys fan.

As a Cowboys fan, I expect more from my team ...

than a half-assed offensive effort, stupid mistakes, poor discipline and a general “we could care less” attitude about winning games. They’ll probably win 5 or even 6 more games this season. And that will make them solidly mediocre. I bet you and all the “real” Cowboys fans will be just thrilled to death with that. Silly me, I expect more.

I cant tell if it's more Romo or Garett

Thats making the offense look sucky.

ITs gotta be

Garrett. Players don’t matter. They are completely interchangeable.

I'd like to see some Kitna

If another QB looks bad, we can start to lay more of the blame on Garett.

Although I guess last year’s Brad Johnson effort wasnt promising, but ten again you can probably blame the fact he looked completely immobile.

The killer thing

Is we’re always so damn close…

Yet you always know we’re going to pull victory from the jaws of defeat in crunch time..

This game was such a HUGE turning point to, win it, at 3-1, you figure 4-1 next week after KC, with a good chance to beat ATL because you’re at home, the entire season is downhill from 4-1. Now everything is different from 2-2.

Dammit

And I go check on my FFL team and discover I’m going to lose — when I thought I was going to win going away — because my opponent picked up San Fran’s defense and they ended up giving him 39 points.

I hate sports.

39 points from a defense, that has to be the most I have ever seen in recent memory.

4-8

I forgot to put in my picks for the second league, but I put them in for the first pick ’em league…it is a pain in the ass to go and copy everything into the second one anyway.

But yeah, of the people actually participating, i’ll probably be dead last after this week.

by Adam J. Morris on Oct 4, 2009 6:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Got a better one.

I notice that my opponent this coming week doesn’t have a playable RB2. So I offer him Ray Rice (solid, but unspectacular RB2-not enough TD’s) and Steve Smith (Giants) for Calvin Johnson. I’m thinking, sure Smith will be better than people expect, but he’s not going to get enough red zone targets to be a No.1 WR like Calvin Johnson is. Probably won’t be enough of a deep threat either. I basically pictured him as a Wes Welker type.

Calvin Johnson was good today-14 pts. Steve Smith gave him 25. Unless Peterson goes off tomorrow night (and Percy Harvin doesn’t), I’m hosed.

i think

they have shown some signs that they are a pretty good team in areas. really good run game if they can get felix healthy. up until today the pass protection has looked good. defense has stepped it up the last two weeks. it will be a week of ‘fire wade’, ‘romo sucks,’ etc, etc, but there is still a decent chance they will be 5-2 looking at the next three games.

by selppuc on Oct 4, 2009 6:54 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yep

Now the defense is playing good, but of course the offense is letting us down so the net effect is the same, losing.

by Sharky on Oct 4, 2009 7:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Defense not that great

they just haven’t played many good Offenses.

50% good offenses

not sure why carolina isnt, werent they one of the best last year? so 75% great offenses

tb was good last year too, so 4 good offenses played so far

jake delhomme and carolin were loaded with talent last year. they are great.

The same Carolina offense...

that is averaging 12.3 pts/game?

The Tampa Bay offense that is averaging 13.5 pts/game?

The Denver offense which is averaging 19 pts/game?

I don’t see any great offenses outside of the Giants (27 pts/game).

well

when we turn it over in the redzone, it’s hard for the other team not to get points…look at yesterday, they drove it down the field once, and it was aided by stupid calls

usa

by Longhorn on Oct 5, 2009 9:30 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

Pretty much we’ve only given up about 1 real drive a game but our turnovers have given teams short fields way too often. Our defense hasn’t been great but they are far from the reason we are 2-2 right now

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

Yeah

pretty much, though, our defense couldn’t get stops in the last 2 minutes of our 2 losses.

As far as the offense goes,

I got this hunch that if Patrick Crayton were replaced by Miles or Hurd in the starting lineup, it’d really take off

by tyd3311 on Oct 5, 2009 10:10 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Eh...

they are giving up a lot of yardage per game/per play.

They seem to tighten up in the Red Zone though.

by cmkelly29 on Oct 5, 2009 10:41 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

eh what

it’s the truth. not many teams can consistently drive 60-70-80 yards on this D. TOs has killed this team. This is a 4-0 team if they didn’t have any TOs. It’s the same kind of D that bends, but doesn’t break…like it did last year and the 13-3 year…

usa

by Longhorn on Oct 6, 2009 6:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

Also thats because alot of drives by the other team have started deep in their own territory. McBriar has pinned teams deep alot which means alot of those yards teams are getting are from the 10/15 yard line to about the opposite 40 or 50 yard line.

They usually give up 1 long drive which always seems to come at the end of the 1st half but overall this defense has been pretty damn good without creating many turnovers and their best defensive player being shut out so far

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Oct 6, 2009 6:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Garrett

One way you can tell McDaniels is better, is every so often, a couple times early, he’d take a real deep shot. For six points type of shot. Didn’t work out, but those are so dangerous.

Good OC’s do that. Norv used to in the Cowboys glory days. Always at the time you least expect it, when theyve lulled you to sleep with a lot of succesful short stuff.

It’s another thing I’m disappointed in about Garrett lately. This offense gains a lot of jagged 10-30 yard gains, but he hasnt really gone for that bomb, at all really. Even in Tampa, those long scores where more slants that were broken than true deep shots.

by Sharky on Oct 4, 2009 7:09 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Not sure there has been enough confidence...

..in the O-line to call those plays. I think the biggest surprise today for me was how easy it was for the Denver secondary. It’s sort of a chicken or egg situation, but their pass rush and secondary really turned it on in the second half and probably won them the game.

Still another bad game by Romo. That’s 2 in 3 weeks with a mediocre game in between. He needs a good game next week.

Who are some good real football men around the league?

Out of curiosity?

You know, a half dozen or so names?

by Sharky on Oct 4, 2009 7:25 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm just throwing it out there:

They could made the exact same changes that the Jets made this offseason (minus Sanchez). Hire the 3-4 D-coordinator Rex Ryan from the Ravens, sign Jim Leonhard, Bart Scott (or Ray Lewis), and maybe they bring that tough attitude that this Cowboys team is striving for.

It’s just interesting because the comparable pieces they brought in- Brooking, Sensebaugh- have been great and decent. Still, the penalties and Romo’s inability to cancel out his shortcomings (ball safety, overagressiveness) with his benefits (quick release, pocket presence, accuracy) so far this year are maddening. And seem to be coachable…

i mentioned this above

i recall ajm loving Bob Kraft. But, he hates Jerry Jones? His boy Parcells talked shit about Kraft, but NEVER anything bad about Jones..

So, BP wasn’t shy talking about why he was run out of town in NE, but he all of a sudden got shy in Dallas?

Weird.

by Longhorn on Oct 4, 2009 8:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah

jones seems kind of slimy but it’s weird how all his ex employees love him.

well i guess except jimmy, heh.

ajm likes kraft because he’s a bandwaggoner, and since the patriots won, it must prove they have a good owner.

parcells left because he knows he’s a loser, basically. he knew he wasnt going to win anymore as a coach.

sad when a coach loses confidence.

Why does SF keep winning

No WAY Jimmy Raye is calling plays down there, the way theyre winning, is there?

Anybody live down there? Whos calling plays? Looked like about 8 young QB coaches on the ESPN highlight I saw lol

I mean if it’s Raye, yeah theyre still going to suck this year. But it’s sort of hard to believe he is so far, with their success.

I mean thats what I’m gathering from a cursory look at their ESPN board.

Go back and watch the DVR of the last 2 plays from the 2. Miles Austin had his guy beat by 2 steps on the other side of the field on the slant, and Romo never even looked that way.
