Rangers press conference notes
The Rangers had their season-ending press conference today, and you can read write-ups on it from Evan Grant here, Richard Durrett here, and Anthony Andro here.
The one thing that jumps out is that the front office expects to have a payroll budget similar to what the Rangers had in 2009, which was right around $68 million. While the Rangers won't have a ton of money to spend -- they owe about $30 million to Kevin Millwood, Michael Young, and Ian Kinsler, plus another couple of million on the Vicente Padilla and Frank Catalanotto buyouts -- that should keep them from being forced to move guys for payroll reasons.

Without having the numbers in front of me, that sounds like they’ll have extra actually.
Do the arbitration cases and other raises compensate for the Blalock+Benoit+Padilla money going out the door?

Thier arb eligible players
will probably make a total of $8-10M. That is if the offer arbitration to German and Grilli.

who all is arbitration eligible?

More like, who isn't arbitration eligible.
Kinsler, MY, Millwood are not eligible as they are under contract and/or old.
Jones and Guardado aren’t coming back. Vizquel may not come back. Pudge may not come back. Only Pudge would result in draft pick compensation if offered arbitration. Byrd is the other player eligible for FA and would also bring draft pick compensation if offered arbitration.
Those in the 3-6 year category are CJ (~4-yr service time), frankfrank (5 yr), Grilli (4-yr), Esteban German (4.5-yr), Hamilton (3-yr), and Feldman (3-yr).

Amazing that German only has 4.5

Arb cases
The three big ones are C.J., Frankie, and Hamilton.
I suspect they will, in aggregate, make about $10 million.

Feldman will be getting a nice raise.

So about $10m left over, right?

How do you figure
CJ and Frankie will probably make 3 each. After this year Hamilton had I don’t think theres any way he gets 4.
I think Hamilton will probably get 2 at most with CJ and Frankie between 3 and 3.5
So 8-9 mil for those three with Feldman probably getting 2-2.5

I think you are underestimating what Hamilton gets
I think all three of those guys will be in the $3-3.5 million range.
Feldman is probably about $2 million.
by Adam J. Morris on Oct 6, 2009 9:07 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why do you think Hamilton gets 3+ mil?
Hes coming off a not only injury plagued season but when he was healthy he wasn’t very good. He will be 29 next season. 2 of his first three years have been injury plagued.
Yes he had 2008 which was an amazing season but his 2009 pretty much killed any momentum he had going into arbitration.
I think this season, his first arbitration season, he will only get 2 mil at most. Now if he bounces back toward his 2008 numbers next year then I think he will get a big raise next winter.
As for Feldman, I think this winter would be a great time to look into extending him. Lock up a FA year or two would bring cost certainty which would be an added bonus to potential buyers.

I think that the totality of his work...
…the past three years is going to result in him getting about $3 million.
Yes, he was not good this year, but he was an MVP candidate in 2008.

I've said it before and I'll say it again
this team is really only going to improve on the offensive end based on internal improvements. I’m not sure how else we upgrade/where we upgrade. Possibly DH but if Smoak starts next year at 1B, Davis will be our near-full time DH.
by Agreen07 on Oct 6, 2009 3:10 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
the obvious place to upgrade offensively.
is a one year rental of a DH/1B.

I don't see
a lot of upside to bringing up Smoak at the beginning of the year. My assumption is you bring in a bat, and bring Smoak up if the acquired DH or Davis flames out. If neither flames out, Smoak stays on the farm til Sept.

Smoak will be Longoria'd
or at least dont you think he would?
He didnt exactly dominate AAA this year (although Im actually very encouraged by his overall season b/c he showed an incredibly good eye at all levels). I think he could use a little more time in AAA just to build some confidence coming into the majors some time in May. We have enough OF depth even w/o Byrd to use one of them at the DH slot in some type of platoon with a RH bat pickup.
Feliz says his greatest thrill was striking out Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz, one of his heroes. Yet, when he called to tell his parents, his mother had a request: Strike out New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, too.
"So when I did that," Feliz says, "I told my mom, 'There you go. There's your present. Don't ask me to strike anyone else out, OK?'

Yes
I imagine either we use one of our OF as DH or if a veteran NRI makes the club give them the job. I wouldnt expect Smoak until June-ish timeframe

Didn't Smoak start out pretty slow, picking up his #'s towards the end of the year?
or am I mistaken?

Nice to see RW give props to CD. He especially seems to be excited about CDs return to
hitting the ball the opposite way.
BUT…… ‘situational hitting’ is the thing that’s going to solve the offense? Really? Maybe I don’t understand what situational hitting is from RW’s perspective, but it seemed to me the Rangers did a poor job of getting themselves into situations in which situational hitting could even be considered and that would be a more fundamental problem, IMO.

it is what it is, right?
our big problem is getting on base, but we are pretty bad at situational hitting. i just don’t think RW ever really got it. He’s their friend, and like someone posted on here. The players don’t need to like the manager, they need to respect him.

That's exactly what Wash is/has been talking about
Getting a runner over, not swinging for the fences, going to RF with a runner on 3rd—-those have been his laments all season long, and another reason why I don’t think he and Rudy are on the same page w/regards to the offense.

Situational hitting
I saw way too many times where we had runners on 3rd with less than 2 outs and instead of trying to hit a flyball or even a ground ball we were swinging for the fences and ended up striking out. Little stuff like that

Its not enough...
but at least its something. I really am hoping we do decide we can swing something and add one piece.
I think the offense will be better with a full year of Borbon at leadoff. I also still hope that the last part of the season was the sign of Chris Davis to come, not just one nice bump in the road.
But I really think we need one more bat impact bat, could be Josh if he is healthy, and probably one good rotation arm. I doubt we get it though.
