Tony Romo is Officially Pathetic + video proof
Why did Tony Romo really throw to Sam Hurd on 3rd and 4th down, especially considering Champ Bailey was covering him? Maybe because Romo got confused and thought it was only 1st and 2nd down when he made the throws? Pretty F'ing Pathetic.
Watch this video right after Romo throws the incomplete pass to Hurd on 4th down.
UPDATE: Here’s the statement the public relations department released:
As Tony was walking off the field after the fourth down play, he saw that the down marker on the Dallas sideline read “3.” As it turned out, the marker was in the process of being changed, sequentially, from the number “4” to the number “1” for the Broncos ensuing possession. The marker on the Cowboys side read “3” temporarily. When he saw the “3,” he thought there might have been the possibility of an error on the down count. After asking the officials (holding up three fingers), he then saw the down marker move through the progression from 3 to 2 to 1.

Doesn't really matter...
For the play that was called he thought that was his best option…that’s the problem. You can blame Garrett for the call and Romo for the decision. Doesn’t matter that it was 4th. You’re trying to score a touchdown on every play.

What if Romo was making the quick throw because he thought
he had an additional down to try again? To say it doesn’t matter is crazy.

Well if it had to do with time implications....
I could see that.
Still though the problem I see in all of this is the fact that they actually tried Sam Hurd TWICE against Champ Bailey! I’d almost expect Champ Bailey to come up with the ball more then Sam Hurd.

I jumped off the Romo bandwagon a year or so ago. He has many maddening faults. But to say he didn’t know what down it was is epically ridiculous.

Have you ever played football before in your life?
if so, have you ever forgotten what down it was? In baseball, do outfielders sometimes forget how many outs there are? Shit happens all the time. To say that it wasn’t possible that Romo forgot the down is ignorance at best.
by Agreen07 on Oct 8, 2009 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
QB ≠ Outfielder
A fairer comparison would be: bottom of the ninth, 2 outs, runners in scoring position; the batter swings and misses 3 times and tries to get back in the box not realizing he has struck out and ended the game. Never happens…it is ludicrous to think he didn’t know the situation.

I agree
If that’s the best play they thought they could rrun, then the down doesn’t matter. He made a good throw, Hurd should’ve held onto it.

Two things:
1. If you watch the video, he knew what down it was. He was walking off the field. Then he looked up and saw something that must have been noting fourth down. At that point he changed direction and I guess tried a very pathetic “hey we only got three downs right?” type of move. Like a receiver getting up and running after clearing trapping a ball.
2. Even if he didn’t know it was fourth down I don’t know that it’s that big of a deal. It’s funny/sad, but it doesn’t really affect the outcome.

I'm not a huge Roy Williams supporter or anything
but I do believe he would have played if he thought he could. The guy is a competitor…he wants to win, and more than anything wants to prove to everyone that he is a legit #1.

What was the story with Barber, was he on the field at all and just not being used or was he on the sideline?
As for Roy, maybe he truly couldn’t play, I dunno. But I was bothered by the fact that he was on the sidelines with his helmet off and just standing there. Not being treated or not headed for treatment, just standing there. I got a bad vibe from it, as if he didn’t want to be on the field bad enough.

I think he is decent but he isn’t a good one. IMO its time to drop them both, Garrett is good for the first few games but then doesn’t do much, Wade even though he has gotten this defense to be better he hasn’t done anything to make us stand out, we had 1 good year where TO was on fire and our offense couldn’t be stopped right when we couldn’t score above 20 we lost.. Question
Let us assume, for the sake of discussion, Garrett stayed here a couple of years ago instead of accepting a head coaching job because Jones promised him he’d take over for Wade and be the next Cowboy coach.
If Wade is fired after the season, should that promise be honored?

much like the promise to Fuson, the promise is ignored.

I dunno.
If you could hire someone that’s a huge name, I could see the whole “well, I was going to hire you, but I didn’t expect that ______ would be available” thing play out.
I don’t think Garret is awful as an OC. He definitely has those streaks where he’s inside the opposing DC’s head. I just wish there were someone over him to keep him in check (like Parcells used to do). Maybe if you promote him to HC, he gets more conservative when he has to deal with the press and the fans and what not, but I’d just as soon try to replicate what made him successful before.
I do think that you’re griping about Jerry Jones is unfair though. From the Parcells era forward, he has been at least an average GM. There are no concerns about payroll like in some NFL cities, and while he doesn’t hit on every signing/draft pick, he does better than many. Think about how much of the team was drafted/UDFA signings by the Cowboys:
2009:
Offensive Starters(Important backups): Romo, Barber (Felix, Choice), Crayton, Bennett, Flozell, Gurode, (Colombo was a signed after Chicago decided he was a bust), Witten (Austin, Hurd)
Defensive Starters (Important backups): Spears, Ratliff, Spencer(Butler), Bradie James, D-Ware, Newman, Jenkins, (Scandrick)
2008:
Offense: Same.
Defense: Add Canty, Roy Williams and nickel LB Burnett.
That’s 7 out of 11 starters on each side of the ball plus important depth positions. This is not the same GM that kept trying to build teams through free agency. In fact, I really like the model they follow where they try to find underrated players to fill holes on short term contracts so that they aren’t forced to draft for need.
Though you can argue he still gets tempted into making the glitzy move instead of moves purely motivated by winning from time to time, he hasn’t been a bad GM over the past 5 years.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?

I remember the Redskins doing this a few years ago
with Greg Williams. When Gibbs left, I think Williams did too cause they gave the job to Zorn – what a move thats looking like. As for Garrett, it all depends on who’s avaliable to coach. There’s always going to be assistant coaches who have a great year and then inevitably get a job. Garret had his chance but he was in essance “promised” the Dallas job. Honestly, at this point, if the season keeps going like this and after 8 games, we’re like 3-5, I day fire Wade and let Garret interm for the last 8 games and see where it goes from there. Because with Wade, it clearly does not look good at this point

In that situation you put 5 out wide and run combos with the far outside guy and the slot guy. Send the innermost slot guy on a slant over the middle with the outside guys running slants and the slot guys running outs. If they send the house you got a guy going over the middle. If they drop off you hopefully create space with picks that are created. And whatever you do you dont allow them to have Champ Bailey on the guy who is your first read

Let's face it.
There isn’t much about this team that is good right now.
Cupcake is an absolute joke of a HC. Garrett’s offense is overly conservative and predictable. The defense plays great until crunch time in the 4th. The o-line, especially the left tackle, is doing a horrible job, which is exacerbated by Romo growing roots in the pocket. Romo is a not a pocket passer. He’s at his best when he uses his feet to make plays (hell, his passes are more accurate when he’s on the run), but he doesn’t like to move anymore. The offense has zero confidence right now and you can tell it by the complete lack of intensity they exhibit on the field.
You can point fingers at different individuals all you want, but it’s got to dawn on somebody at some point that there’s a little truth in all of the finger pointing, which means that it’s not any one person who is failing, it’s pretty much the whole team from the top down.
I guess the one nice thing is that they are at least not keeping us fooled until collapse time in December. They’re letting us know right out of the gate that they aren’t a championship caliber team. When’s Spring Training start?

• South Florida FS Nate Allen, who spearheads the Bulls’ 12th-ranked pass defense, snagged two interceptions last week against Syracuse and delivered a helmet-corking hit on a receiver crossing the middle the week before in a 17-7 upset win over Florida State. His range and playmaking ability have served a key role in USF’s 5-0 start. The Bulls and undefeated Cincinnati each have two weeks to prepare for their Big East showdown on Thursday, Oct. 15 in Tampa. The Bearcats, headed by efficient senior QB Tony Pike, will challenge USF as much as any team to date, with Cincy coach Brian Kelly understanding matchups and having done a masterful job of coaching since he arrived at the program. If Allen continues to play the way he has through the first five weeks, he could warrant legitimate first-round interest in a safety class that could be very strong at the top, likely featuring USC’s Taylor Mays and Tennessee junior Eric Berry.
