Jon Daniels chat
Richard Durrett is hosting a chat over on the ESPN Dallas site at 11:00 AM central. To ask a question, go here. Should be interesting to hear what Daniels has to say, fresh off of the season ending press conference.

Got a question for you guys
Would you trade Teagarden and Hunter for Matt Gamel?
I am trying to establish what his value really is….
JD’s like, "you want some fucking pitching? Here’s all the pitching you can stand. Now choke on it, bitches!"- RCCook
No
Gamel is a DH and he’s not that great of a hitter.

Ugh
I’m listening to Norm right now, and he’s harping on about how the Rangers had the 5th most errors in baseball this season, saying that he puts more stock in the improved pitching than the defense.
Norm’s a sensational broadcaster, but I simply don’t understand why guys who make a business of talking sports on a deeply analytical level don’t do some rudimentary research to keep up with the times.
I like steak.
I'm listening to the rant also. Norm has his
head up his ass.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
Sensational?
Please. Norm has been mailing it in on quite a few sports for the last 5-10 years.

You can pound him with facts and he’ll get flustered.

Yeah,
I don’t think he has the same passion for baseball, which is probably natural. I know as I get older I follow less sports closely.

"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
True
I guess the only thing they could hope for is to trade for a younger, unproven player. I mean you arent going to find a 1 for 1 type of deal where you get someone as productive as Cruz right away. Seems like it must be a deal for more of an unknown quantity. Not what this team needs right now IMO.

Depends on where they trade him
There are teams like KC who are clueless about defense and will likely be put off by visual assessments of Nelly’s D. If they choose to shop him to a numbers-conscious team, though, we should see a pretty nice return.

name one move
just one that you think he should have made that would have put us in the playoffs
Trade for VMartinez at the trade deadline
OR
Sign Bobby Abreu last off-season.
Those moves are the reason we’re sitting home in October.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
On VMart
What would have been our equivalent? Perez, Font, and another young high end arm for a year and a half of VMart.
I am not sure thats a good trade for us to make, considering I don’t think it would have made us the favorite for either the division or the wild card. We really needed at least 2 bats to make a difference, probably more with the injuries that we ended up seeing.
What do voluntary mean?
You don't need to give up Perez, Holland or Feliz
to get VMart.
This is supposedly such a deep system that we should have been able to give them prospects 5-8.
It’s the difference in the race. Theo made the move and JD pissed himself.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
What makes you think Cleveland takes that deal?
Just because you say we should be able to offer it doesn’t mean it would have pleased the other team. This isn’t a video game where you can force the computer to take whatever you offer.
And weren’t you saying just the other day that Nolan was so awesome because he kept JD from trading all the young talent we have?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I bet you do
have to give up at least one player viewed as a top 5 system talent. The lowest of those really was Perez. Masterson, Hagadone, and Price wasn’t a horrible package. It was their preseason #2 and #3 plus one more. I agree with you that we wouldn’t have had to give up one of our top players. But I would bet that most would probably think that was starting to be a similar package.
What do voluntary mean?

leadership should come from the manager
That way you don’t have to keep spare or overpriced players around to provide it.

I disagree
a bit. I think leadership is tiered. The mgr has to be a certain type of leader while there has to be a player or two who a leader on another level. The question is, can you monetize that leadership? Is it worth anything in terms of a dollars?

So your big hard hitting question
is why dind’t the 5th OF with a bum shoulder get more time?
What do voluntary mean?
Yeah, you better come out of the gate
shooting, SSS or no SSS if you are a young player. Guys who perform at a below replacement level like Boggs has done in his 350 PAs are generally not given the benefit of the doubt.
When Managers are making up the lineup card for that nights game, they are generally more interested in winning that nights game rather than bringing along youngsters. The thought that some have that you somehow owe young players a couple of years of everyday play when they perform at a below replacement level is just not realistic.
Sometimes you have to send players down, like Cruz, and the Angels Howie Kendrick. If the players can’t contribute in their callups before you run out of options, you probably brought the player up too early for his first callup.
"I don't condone steroids or any other type of growth hormones or anything else, but I could care less, and, for the most part, I don't think the fans give a (bleep). The people that care about it are the people that probably don't like baseball," - Jim Leyland
I don't think
Ron knows what “replacement level” means.

"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
None of my questions were chosen.
Not sure if they were taken in order, or chosen.
I wanted to know why borbon was considered a plus defender after the draft and touted as the future centerfielder and now we are hearing in the press that he is not good enough defensively to be a major league center fielder
"I'm against picketing, but I don't know how to show it." - Mitch Hedberg
I asked about Boggs.
I also asked how they truly evaluated the Chris Davis that came back from OKC (taking into consideration the number of infield hits and what his average/obp were in late September).
I also asked how this off-season is going to be any different than this past trade deadline in regards to trades. The needs are still the same now that they were on Opening Day and at this past trade deadline (when the team did nothing).
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Ranger players, especially veterans, weren’t surprised that Daniels couldn’t find a deal"
no they werent
the perceived need on opening day was pitching. the perceived need at the trading deadline wasnt the same as the actual need, since everyone figured that kinsler and hamilton were going through short slumps and would break out of them. now, everyone knows that we’re a couple of bats short, but thats definitely not what the needs were at the beginning of the season and the trade deadline
We lost Milton Bradley and his .436 obp
We thought there was going to be an adverse effect on the offense.
By the trade deadline, it was the most glaring need on the team.
JD never replaced him.

Your right
DH was one of the major problems on the team this year. The lack of a league average or better DH really hamstrung our team.
What do voluntary mean?
No,
the problem was that an average AL team has a 1B with an OPS of .820 or so.
Our 1B had an OPS of something close to .685.

for all the bitching about DHs by some, our DHs were above league average as a whole.
Ranger DHs .242/.312/.491
League DH .255 /.337/.443
On a WOBA basis, the Rangers had the 6th best DHs in the league.
Where the Rangers shit the bed was at 1B (14th out of 14), C (10th out of 14). Positions worse than DH were CF (8/14), RF (7/14), and SS (7/14th).
DH wasn’t really close to a top problem, despite all the wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Damn
I tried sending in a Josey question, but it didn’t get through. Cheers to whomever it was that got one in.
Hilarious.
That is a
chickenshit tactic.

Very funny

Yep
I certainly hope the new Ownership gives him a chance, and I hope he has some money to play with this offseason to give the team a better shot at next year.

JD hasn’t proven he knows what the hell to do with money when it’s been provided in the past.
He’d spend money just because it was there instead of doing it smartly.

IF I had said that was really me
or claimed it to be mine (after it received a funny reaction), I’d be surrounded by little Lewinskys throwing down their gloves wanting to go.

What is funny
is that JD ran with it. I love that guy.
My sentiments exactly…

So
I jump into the JD chat thread thinking that it’s got 150 comments summarizing/discussing the questions and answers. Instead, it’s just another thread full of Josey Gaga wiggling his vestigial Blalock around at anybody who wants to take a bite at it. sigh
Really?
I didn’t see any confrontations, just running commentary on the questions being asked of JD plus I had to play some defense because a Fake Josey was allowed to ask a question.
The CDavis subject was brushed but only because JD was asked a question.

Only thanks to my troll script, all I see is a bunch of “Molahepoleha! Molahepoleha! Olee Olay oh-ho! Ileoanda! Ileoandabalichialhondo!’s” and people responding to them.
Hank is 7 runs below a zombie replacement at first base. Do you realize how terrible that is? Zombie’s can’t think, they’re slow, and they’re often ejected from the game for eating opposing baserunners’ brains. - Ben quantifies Hank Blalock
