Bailey was impressive
but I just couldn’t vote a relief pitch ahead of an everyday player.

agreed
I would vote, 1. Andrus, 2. Anderson, 3. Niemann

It more has something to do with predicting the future
But in the end, last season, every hit he got counted equally.
not really
Just a tough field of rookie competition. Any of those top 4 would have deserved to win. I think my vote would actually have gone to McCutchen.
yay!
and lol @ porcello getting 1st place votes

I thought MLB would announce ROY today at noon
It’s past noon.
It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.
Never mind - gold gloves are today.
Still, haven’t heard the announcement yet.

Yay!
Though you could really make an argument for any of the top five or so.
What do tigers dream of when they take a little tiger snooze? Do they dream of mauling zebras, or Halle Berry in her Catwoman suit?
Very cool.
Congrats Elvis.
Adam, I assume you voted for the King?
Not mediocre. Right about average
How can you put Bailey of Anderson?

I'm assuming you also
have JD as Executive of the Year ?

Pretty close vote.
How many votes were cast? I would assume 30. If not, I apologize for this rant in advance. Elvis only rec’d 21 votes. So, 9 voters didn’t feel he warranted a top 3 vote. Peeshah. Pffffttttt. Really?! Why are you voting?

29 voters
I would assume those that didn’t vote for him only considered his offensive numbers.

ie mailed it in. Exactly what I was saying. If you don’t know about Elvis, clearly you are either a huge homer or hate baseball. I can see a reason for not voting for him to win, but there just isn’t anyway he is not a unanimous top 3 selection.
Your 2009 Snow Monkey Ambassador
My guess is Bailey
doesn’t get this much love among the real voters. Still any of the top 4 could end up with it.
My ballot
ROY
1. Elvis Andrus
2. Gordon Beckham
3. Brett Anderson
I possibly should have gone Anderson second, labored over that, but Beckham is just damn good. Assuming that Adam voted for Andrus, I’m a little surprised that only four of the other 27 voters had him first.
by Brett Perryman on Nov 10, 2009 12:59 PM CST reply actions
It's a shame that Brett Anderson
Doesn’t get top 3 mention on most ballots. People tend to vote too much on win-loss record etc. Wins used to mean something when pitchers would pitch longer in games etc, but with so many relievers used nowadays a win is not really indicative of a pitchers performance. There are too many variables.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Where Anderson ends up will really affect how I feel about the mainstream baseball press and if theyve caught up with the times in terms of analysis. I think his performance is slightly better than Niemann’s or Porcello’s, though at the very least he should be considered on par with them. I suspect he’ll finish 4th or 5th in the actual ballot, behind at least Porcello and possibly both of them though. It’s really a shame.

And now Beckham is at 2B
His value will be even higher after he get set there.

just out of curiosity
Who did you vote for MVP? Mauer all the way?
is there a flaw in this system?
I haven’t really thought about it, but it just seems like there would be.
i wonder
why there isn’t just one vote for each voter. Most votes wins ROY.
never understood why you have to pick 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc…
usa
most guys vote for their hometown guy
multiple votes give a more impartial view of things.
Well it allows for more nuance in the evaluation. Under the 1 vote system, if a voter votes for say Beckham, then Elvis and Derek Holland are equivalent for that voter – they each get 0 points. When clearly, in that voter’s mind, there would be a distinction between them. You dont have to get to perfect levels of precision, but at least enough levels to cover the likelihood of disagreement between voters. You need some method of establishing partial credit to make the process as reliable as possible in rewarding the best performance.

Yay
This is exactly how I’m hoping the real ROY voting will occur. Andrus with LOTS of 2nd place votes, and someone like Bailey getting several #1s while being left off many ballots, siphoning off votes from Anderson. My main Rice man Niemann and Porcello split with Anderson the starting pitcher vote. And Elvis drifts up to #1 in the tightest voting in years.
Go Rice Owls!
Way to go, Elvis!
I can’t believe almost a year ago we were worried that he may not make it past April…what a great season!

Teix, Polanco, Jeter, Longoria, Torii, Ichiro, Adam Jones, Buehrle (C not announced yet). Whatever.

Polanco and Hunter blow
and Gutierrez is ten times better than Jones.

The only defensible picks might be Teix, Longoria and Ichiro
I agree about Gutierrez but Adam Jones is pretty good.

Reputation and name recognition played a huge role in the voting, as I saw it first-hand.
You don’t say. I can’t say I’m suprised but Elvis was getting some major love from ESPN and MLB Network. Thought that might be enough for the coaches to pay attention. Apparently not.

I don't know which makes me more ill:
That Derek Jeter beat Elvis Andrus (and Cesar Izturis, and Adam Everett, and Erick Aybar) for the Gold Glove, or that it’s his FOURTH GOLD GLOVE.
What do tigers dream of when they take a little tiger snooze? Do they dream of mauling zebras, or Halle Berry in her Catwoman suit?
Elvis probably needs to date a few models
win a couple WS and dive into the stands a few times before he’ll win.

I hate.
Derek Jeter.
Yes, I know the Gold Glove voting isn’t his fault, that I should hate the BBWAA more, but holy fuck. How does this happen? How does that slow liability win any Gold Gloves?
You learn something every day.
I didn’t realize the BBWAA had no input in this award, that it’s all coaches and players. No wonder it sucks. Boom.
Wow...
I’m a little surprised at how much complaining there is on various SB-Nation sites about Elvis winning.
Go Rangers! Go Cowboys! Go FSU!
Gold glove voting is seriously f'd up
What I’d like to see is maybe Wash taking up the cause given he’s a D minded guy. He or someone else needs to tell MLB that coaches and managers don’t treat this seriously but it’s serious to the players. If the voting by managers/coaches is going to be crap then someone else needs to vote.

Heh
Who, the writers?
The bottom line is, awards seem to be voted on by the two dumbest groups in baseball, and until the caliber of writers and managers/coaches improve, the awards are going to be a joke.

"...he wasn’t a good hitter, just a good middle of the order bat that hit a lot of homers." - NYTXFAN on Mark McGwire
Writers would be better than coaches/managers
Although the definition of who can be in the BBWAA maybe needs to be tweaked further. It’s odd because I’m listening to ESPN radio and Doug Gottlieb just mentioned how people have observed that Jeter’s range has decreased. If that dork’s aware of that fact I’m guessing other people in the media are too.

Yeah, we need a smarter group, like the fans. You know, the group that gave Derek Jeter the Hank Aaron Award this season for supposedly being the best hitter in the A.L.
Who do you think the smart groups of folks are?
by Adam J. Morris on Nov 10, 2009 7:30 PM CST up reply actions
I think you're screwed with whatever group you go with because
every group has their idiots.
The guys at BP, Fangraphs, BBTF
You know, the guys who know how to analyze baseball.
Of course, it’ll never happen and it’s just a pipe dream, but the awards would have much more credibility if they where at least handed out by a group that voted on better criteria than errors, fielding percentage, “reputation” and “eye test”.
"It's kind of a new stat that's in vogue" - Joe Buck on OPS

Sort of but if only those guys voted it would alienate the average fan
I also don’t understand everything that goes into advanced defensive metrics but I trust them. Gold glove is a truly old award and if it’s based on things 5% of the fans understand it would still be meaningless. There’s a way to do this but I just don’t know what that is yet.

I still don't know why people got all hot and bothered over Bailey
Or Porcello for that matter. Porcello’s got his name and his prospect rep going for him but we’ve been over this: there was a much more deserving contender on Bailey’s own team in Brett Anderson.
Who probably should’ve won, IMO.
