No Rangers, although Evan Grant says Ian Kinsler deserved consideration.

Derek Jeter

I would be laughing if I wasn’t already choking on my own vomit.

to be fair

even though he didnt really deserve it, Jeter did have one of his best defensive seasons and it wasnt like elvis totally blew him out of the water.

didn't he have the worst range of any SS

elvis definitely dominated him in getting to balls

i’m not trying to argue that jeter is more deserving than elvis, but he was one of the better SS defenders in the AL this year, so let’s not make this out to be mike young 2008.

I think last year proved that range doesnt matter when youre picking the AL SS gold glove

"Hey you know who would have gotten those 3 outs in the 9th?

how so?

Michael Young led all AL Shortstops with 36 FRAR in 2008.

by iblum on Nov 11, 2009 5:29 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

um..... no

Jeter: 2009 FRAR, 17
2008 FRAR, 19

Elvis: 2009 FRAR, 30
Marco Scutaro: 2009 FRAR, 42

by iblum on Nov 11, 2009 5:26 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

hmm

im not sure i trust a metric that has mike young as the best defensive SS in the AL last year.

by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Nov 12, 2009 1:54 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

more pain

would it pain you if it said that he was also the most valuable defensive SS in the AL in 2006 as well?

The point here is “value” over “quality”. saying, “best” implies quality. The “best” is a matter of opinion. To some, maybe it means that he’s got the most ability to move left or right and make plays. or it can mean that he’s the tops at avoiding errors. Or at catching pop ups…. Being the most valuable means that over the season you prevented the most hits and consequently most runs of any shortstop. That’s quantifiable. It doesn’t matter how you look while you are doing it. it also doesn’t matter how you do it. If you do it by superior positioning or by being really tall with long arms, or by speed, or with quickness or whatever. That’s the problem with personal observation. Basically, if you run a long way and dive at the end and make the play, you are a great defensive player. That doesn’t tell you whether you were valuable or not.

by iblum on Nov 12, 2009 9:44 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

First, let’s not make this a discussion about quantitative analysis vs. the ‘eye test’. I haven’t based my comments in this thread on what I see on the field. Although Young is probably a case where watching him play regularly does incline you to think this guy isnt the greatest shortstop, I wouldnt apply more than that general judgment if I wanted a more precise picture of his defensive abilities.

What it is about is an unexplained dissonance between different metrics. Now I am far from the statistical whiz kid and when I dont fully understand a metric (or even when I do), I am deferent to those who are more expert than I and have more familiarity with it. MY was considered a poor, or at best mediocre defensive SS last season by the virtual unanimity of the LSB community and by a big preponderance of the SABR-literate national media. Frankly, to a lot of them it was a joke. So my willingness to trust FRAR or FRAA, a stat which I admittedly know only a little about, is tested when it disagrees so profoundly with other metrics that are widely preferred by those whose baseball opinions I usually value.

Maybe Im totally wrong here, and if you have a case to make for FRAR then I’ll gladly hear it with an open mind. But just flashing the numbers up there isnt going to convince me any more then flashing RF/9 or UZR is going to convince Evan Grant.

we all knew Jeter would win at SS

there really should be a system that evaluated defense and then awarded the best at each position. GG is alot like All-star voting, it’s all about popularity and perception.

Defending EG

He did admit that he should have put Pedroia on his MVP ballot.

Also, while EG was clearly just being a Young fan when saying he should win the GG last season, we have to remember that Evan is probably one of the most saber friendly beat writers in baseball. Go send TR Sullivan an email asking about his thoughts on Young’s UZR and I bet he doesn’t even know what that stands for.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Klaw's on vacation according to his personal blog

Not saying it wasn’t him but I’d be suprised.

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.

if his name is mentioned. I think he has some kind of magic charm that tells him when he’s being talked about on a blog so he can go snark at people.

Rob Neyer

says it should have been Elvis! (also, Laird and Youkilis over Mauer and Tex)

There are some great comments on there
are you serious with andrus over jeter?? i know errors don’t account for the whole award but andrus had 22 to jeter’s 8. what a joke of a column and a boston bias
for the Jeter haters out there you dont understand he makes insane over the shoulder catches which he makes look so easy, and his famous jump throw to first… he is clutch

I can’t disagree that he’s famous for his jump throws. Hell, that’s seriously what I call him.

Rob Neyer is just another person with a bias against the yankees. look at jeter’s fielding stats, of course he deserves the award. neyer, go work for the red sox if you love them so much
If they were giving out an award for the top 10 plays/range award then yeah there were a lot of guys other than Jeter who deserved that. BUT he DID have the best Fielding percentage with the least errors for SS who qualified. So stop your bullshi#
Elvis Andrus = 22 errors. Jeter = 8 errors. i mean with out looking at anyone else it is clear that elvis has no business being considered.

no kidding...."he is clutch"

yeah that’s why he wins the gold glove, because he made that play against Giambi in the Divisional series years ago.

what I don't get from those comments

is why they think wanting Andrus to win instead of Jeter means you have a bias for the Red Sox???

by MikeEl on Nov 10, 2009 7:27 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

derek jeter is like abortion

you cant get into an argument about him and have any reasonable expectation of persuading the other person…and you’re probably likely to be accused of horrible things.

Neyer also suggested Youk over Teix

Combine that with even implying that Jeet didn’t deserve it and it’s Red Sox bias.

Sad

Whats sad about this is that anyone who knows Rob Neyer knows he’s a true blue, dye’d in the wool Royals fan. and yes, he knows how painful that is.
