Rosenthal - Sources: Vizquel not returning to Rangers
Free-agent shortstop Omar Vizquel will not be back with the Rangers, major-league sources say.
Vizquel, 42, had 195 plate appearances last season, and is looking for the same type of utility role.
He would prefer a higher-profile team, one source says.

No big surprise
He’d actually be kind of foolish to come back here and settle for a utility role when he can probably get a starting job somewhere based on the season he had in 2009. Fare thee well Omar, it was fun.
So, new shopping list addition: utilityman who can back up SS.

I thought there where rumors of the Red Sox picking him up
And making him at least a part time starter.
Or is that just old rumor?

the guys here are probably going to start 90-95% of the games if healthy
so he’s probably looking for a utility role that will yield more playing time.
Guess Omar disagrees with
Little Boy Donuts and 2010 being our year.
Just an a side…seems like Nolan Ryan has taken a much lower profile this off-season (although it is early) and we’re hearing much more from JD than we heard last year. Maybe it’s because this was a GM meeting.

Cut him some slack
He’s an old man, and is worn out from a year straight of Implementing Massive Change.
He’s plumb tuckered out.

I like it without the bread, just the banana and peanut butter. I’ve polished off 3 of those today with the low fat crunchy, delicious!

Oh my Science, does this grease the wheels for Jack Arias to spend signifigant time on the 25?
’Cause if so, stupid sunovabitch GM, and all that.

More likely German.

German can't play SS
Except in the same capacity that Gerald Laird can play third base.

I think they’re talking about Esteban German.

Esteban German
was pretty good last year. He’s fast, had a ton of stolen bases in the minors and showed a good approach at the plate.
then maybe they poorly evaluated him
It’s not like they have an impressive recent track record at evaluating talent. A few examples off the top of my head they just traded for Betancourt. The off-season before that they signed Mike Jacobs to an expensive contract.
Just realized...
You were talking about Esteban German, not German Duran. My bad, didn’t want to sound like a ruh-tard on my first post…Way to go with that one…

Ah, the legendary German Duran
I remember when some people wanted to move Kinsler to LF so Duran could play 2B. Wasn’t that long ago, actually, but it seems like it.
I wonder what Houston plans to do with him?

It's really pretty funny that we have had two utility infielders in the last couple of years with "German" in their name
What are the odds of that?

According to B-R
There have only been 8 major leaguers with “German” in their name. Some guy named “Crazy Schmit” pulled up because he was from Germany. Played 1912-1925.

I really liked Vizquel, but he wants to go somewhere else to have the same back up role. That is lame. I wonder if something else is involved because he just lost any negotiating power with Boston.

Most likely somebody extremely unexciting, yet veteran-y
If we get lucky, John McDonald. Or maybe we’ll get really lucky and land Nick Green. That would be cool. More likely we get some journeyman like Juan Castro or Wilson Valdez though.
Alex Cora and Bobby Crosby are also out there.

We don't want a John McDonald or even a Bobby Crosby
Because Warsh will be tempted to play him once a week due to his veteran grittiness over Elvis.
If I’m JD, I find a Garrett Atkins type who can sub at the corners and then get an awful backup SS/2B who Warsh wouldn’t play except in the most dire emergencies.
I want Elvis playing every freaking day without hesitation.

We have an awful 2B/quasi-SS on the 40 now
Only thing is Wash isn’t averse to playing him.
And letting him hit leadoff.

Are you talking about Arias?
The guy who started 2 games last season?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
that doesn't nullify the fact that when he started
Wash thought he could hit in the leadoff spot.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Its two games
Who else was going to do it that wouldn’t have caused you to bitch and moan?
Elvis? A 20 year old rookie who was rocking a 243/326 line for the previous month (July 3-Aug 2) and a 329 OBP overall?
You weren’t gonna move Young off the 2 hole
Cruz, Jones, Blalock, Hamilton, Salty, no, no, no, no, no
Byrd? Yeah I can see it now
Murphy is the only guy I could possibly see leading off instead and that would still cause an uproar because people hate Murphy around here plus the fact those two games were against lefties which Murphy sucks against.
It was an emergency situation. The blame shouldn’t be on Wash for hitting Arias leadoff it should be on Vizquel who apparently couldn’t play two games in Oakland because of jet lag. I know hes old but you would think a veteran like him would be able to suck it up for a couple games.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I would have rather had the pitcher hitting leadoff
than ever see Arias doing it.

I don't think theres anyway Elvis gets benched once a week for a veteran
Even if it was Vizquel.
I think Elvis has earned his everyday spot
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Well, one would hope so
But Byrd played 18 more games than Cruz and hit higher in the order every night. So I don’t like to take simple logical decisions for granted.

wash and his mancrush
may it end this winter
Murphy is probably going to be our leadoff hitter while Borbon bats cleanup and Cruz hits 8th.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
We still need a backup plan in case the unthinkable happens
And Elvis gets mutilated by Ritchie Sexson’s ghost or something.
