I wanna know...
who the 5 guys were that didn’t vote for Mauer as the MVP.
Voting for Teix, Jeter or Greinke ahead of him is hilarious.

I don't see how voting Greinke ahead of him is hilarious.
I’d vote for Mauer, but I could easily switch.

See, I was thinking that was high...
For example (not that WAR is the end all), AL WAR:
Zobrist: 8.6
Mauer: 8.2
Jeter: 7.4
Longoria: 7.2
Figgins: 6.1
Gutierrez: 5.9
Youklis: 5.6
Crawford: 5.5
Cabrera: 5.4
Pedroia: 5.2
Teixeira: 5.1
That’s 10 position players you could argue were more valuable. There’s also 7 pitchers (Greinke, Verlander, Halladay, Hernandez, Lester, Sabathia, Beckett). Again, I’m not saying we should vote on these simply by WAR, but as a general reference, I’d say he’s being too kind, not too harsh.

Funny how there are two Rays in the top 5
(Will C, note that Carl Crawford checks in at 27) and that team won 84 games but there are no Rangers in the top 34 yet the Rangers won 87 games.
Hmmmm, 3 Mariners in the top 15?

I would have thought that Michael Young
Scooter Feldman and Nelson Cruz would have rated somewhere within the top 34 most valuable players in the AL this past season.

Question
WAR means wins about replacement correct? So would a team full of 0.0 WAR players finish 81-81? Serious question as i am def showing my ignorance in this saber category.

A team of replacement players
would win about 50 games, IIRC. I can’t remember the details, but it’s pretty poor.

oh okay so that is about the baseline then?
So for example if you looked at every Rangers’ value this yr it should total a positive WAR of 37 (if 50 is the baseline)?

The Rangers total WAR this year
was 40.5 (22 offense, 18.5 pitching). FWIW

Okay so
if we go by Joey’s 48 below and the total of 40.5 for the players that means the Rangers should have won 1-2 more games. They obviously didnt. Is this attributable to luck? Game mgmt? Something else?

Whats the usual variance among teams?
Is one or two games normal? Do some teams underperform their WAR or overperform?
Without looking it up I would imagine the Rangers being 1-2 wins off their WAR is pretty damn good

Part of it could be luck, game management, or w/e
My money though would just be on UZR not being perfect yet on figuring out what happened (mainly throws) and that the pitching is based on FIP which I’ve said here many times why I’m not a fan of basing WAR over it.

Zobrist was a beast.
Problem is, he doesn’t really have a position, which I think hurts him from the periphery.

but is he really MVP beast
sure, he had a good year and was deserving of his All-star spot, but I don’t think he is top 3 in MVP. He isn’t even top on his team. I’d take Crawford and Longoria before Zobrist, and don’t get me wrong Zobrist was really good, but not that good.

and cmon that's a little ridiculous don't you think?
he wasn’t worth that much in any situation. offensively he was good across the board, helped out by his .330 BABIP which will definitely regress, but he wasn’t great. Didn’t hit 30 HRs, didn’t hit .300, didn’t get 100 RBIs or Rs. He stole 17 bases but got caught 6 times. he was good, not great and definitely not worth that money or top 3 MVP imo. Fangraphs dollar values are always seem based in a fantasy world.

MVP is an offensive award
it is historically given to the most productive offensive player, so yeah I don’t take his great UZR etc into account. Then the award is also swayed into if their team made the playoffs, which I don’t agree with but its true.

It really is to some degree...
…because nobody is going to pay Albert Pujols what he’s ‘valued’ at. But that, I don’t think, is the point. The point is not to say Pujols should be getting $38 million dollars this year, but to say that if you paid Pujols for his value on a linear scale at the same rate that you would an average player, that’s what he would be worth. I think everyone realizes that you can’t actually pay him that much.
I suppose what they could do is say the most valuable player should get paid $x dollars ($30 million?), and then adjust everyone’s else’s theoretical worth based on that. But that gives less separation down amongst the average players, where it is needed more.
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?

Quick question, does his WAR based purely on 2B replacements? In other words would it be lower if taking into account the time he spent in the outfield or 3B?

Also funny to see the division breakdown (bias) on this list:
AL East:
Yankees 6 (Teixeira, Jeter, ARod, Rivera, Sabathia, Cano)
Red Sox 9 (Youkilis, Bay, Pedroia, Drew, Lester, Papelbon, VMartinez, Ellsbury, Gonzalez)
Rays 4 (Zobrist, Longoria, Bartlett, Crawford)
Orioles 2 (Roberts, Markakis)
Blue Jays 3 (Halladay, Lind, Hill)
That makes 24 for the East
AL Central 7 (Mauer, Greinke, Cabrera, Verlander, Cuddyer, Choo, Kubel)
AL West 8 (Figgins, Morales, Ichiro, Gutierrez, King Felix, Abreau, Hunter, Young)

that's nuts
there are more nominees from the Sawx than the total from the Central or West.

Alex Gonzalez got a vote
that’s just plain stupid.
Nellie Cruz and MY should probably be higher on the list, but that’s the way it goes.

This entire list is pretty laughable
on several levels.
Internet blogger types shouldn’t bitch about the real process and actual awards because this list proves they aren’t any better.

i disagree with some things
but that will be the case with any list.
They got the winners right and that is the most important thing really. I think it’s ridiculous that Alex Gonzalez and Shin Soo Choo are on the list, but that’s near the bottom. I’d probably swap Longoria and Zobrist, but obviously there are definitely polarizing opinions of Zobrist. Perhaps he doesn’t have a big enough name for me. There still seems to be the east coast bias but that will be the same in the real vote, so I don’t see the issue.

No it's not
it’s ridiculous that Shin Soo Choo is on the list
He was a better hitter than Jeter.

i think choo has a place on there
doesnt contribute much defensively but all those walks and steals shore up his value nicely. i do agree though that it’s a pretty good list. You can argue that it’s not perfect, and therefore the sports blogs should lay off their criticism of the actual voters for their flawed results, but let’s see where they put zobrist.

by MikeEl on Nov 12, 2009 11:46 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
gonzo should be way higher, i mean if you take him away from that club, theyre pretty much a pile of crap. he carried them for most of the season, especially when peavy was out

It's a real shame
that Mauer won’t win the real MVP award

I think Mauer is a slam-dunk to
win the real MVP.

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

Michael Bourn got a vote?!?!
That has to be a homer pick

Gold Glove centerfielder
that lead the league in stolen bases and was basically the only consistently good player on his team. I’ve got no problem giving him a few 8th or 9th place votes. Especially not when Juan Pierre, Nyjer Morgan, and Yadier Molina are also on that list in the NL. Or Ellsbury, Choo, Markakis, Alex Gonzalez, JD Drew, or Jason Kubel are on the list in the AL.
