Of course it seems people are still interested in our catchers
f they are thinking of moving one of the catchers, is there a possibility that they could get Upton from Tampa somehow? Tampa’s Navarro had a horrific year last season and just maybe, they are ready to make a move, either Salty or Teagarden would be a nice improvement in Tampa and Upton,

If only we could trade Salty or Teagarden for BJ Upton…

by MikeEl on Nov 12, 2009 5:30 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

There's a way to make a deal for Upton

And one of the catchers will have to be included, obviously. But, yeah, we’ll need to add something else at this point. It’s a damned tragedy that we couldn’t turn our system depth at C into anything.

by JDT217 on Nov 12, 2009 5:46 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Right now saying

that our system has depth in catchers is like saying Lake Erie has a surplus of fish. Just because they’re there doesn’t mean anyone is any better off for it.

But the perception this time last year was very different. Cat’s out of the bag at this point. They all suck. It’s a shame we couldn’t trade on that misperception when the opportunity was there.

I'm thinking .275/.350/.400 from Salty.

Don’t ask me why I think that, though.

I have no rational reason for believing he’s gonna all the sudden start hitting again.

its certaintly possible

there were times last year when he really looked that good if not better, but he was just a black hole most of the time

Feliz says his greatest thrill was striking out Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz, one of his heroes. Yet, when he called to tell his parents, his mother had a request: Strike out New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, too.
"So when I did that," Feliz says, "I told my mom, 'There you go. There's your present. Don't ask me to strike anyone else out, OK?'

Maybe a slightly lower BA but overall that a pretty good guess I think

I felt that even though the results weren’t there last year Salty made some progress. At least toward what he was publicized as when we got him in the trade. His power was much more evident than in 08. I know most everyone on here saw the drop in OBP and drop in walks and went all nuts but seeing Salty be more aggressive was nice to see for me. He was too aggressive which after awhile got a little old. But if hes gonna be hitting at the bottom of the order and have no speed then I will trade a little OBP and some walks for some more power.

Because he needs to not suck in his limited playing time before anyone plays him for a month at a time.

I just don’t see him playing more than 60 games a year, because he has backup written all over him.

Tea's D

Not as bad as it looked, according to this. They have him pegged as our best defensive catcher, although that seems to be largely because of his throwing.

His problem is he can’t make contact on a consistent enough basis to be a starting player.

You're assuming the opportunity was ever there.

Just cause there was a perception around the series of tubes and the like that our catchers were all super valuable and could’ve been dealt for a nice return doesn’t mean that that was ever actually true.

Certainly at one point they had a higher value than they do now, but I think it’s pretty clear we overrated how much value they actually had around the league.

I hate the fact that TR

is one of the major sources for Rangers info out there. I swear the dude is wrong more often than he is right. I really doubt Borbon is back in DH for most of the year next year. If he is then we probably have to fire Wash.

But over all most of what was said is pretty good. I agree that its something like 4-6 million that we would take back on something like Bradley. I still don’t think that we would have to give up much of anything to get that deal done.

my fave part is:

Choice of Holland, Hunter or Feliz.

As much as I love Big Game Hunter, throwing his name out there as if he’d actually be a viable choice over either Der-Hol and/or Fleas is kinda of silly.

I don't know

Yes, I agree with you that by all rational measures, Feliz~=>Holland>>>Hunter.

But from a PR point of view, a team may decide that they are better off getting Hunter + a high ceiling/risk pitcher (like Font) than Holland, simply because they could point to Hunter and say “see, in return we got someone with a successful major league track record” If he fails, they can at least say “he was good in 2009!” With Holland, while he is more likely to succeed, if he fails stupid critics will inevitably say “they traded for a guy who bombed in his debut”

Another idea...

on a deal for Board Game (and yes, I’m pretty much obsessed with him at this point).

How about Murphy for Bradley and the Cubs eat half of the salary he’s owed. I know the Cubs want a CFer, but Murphy would be a nice 4th OFer/PH for them.

by MikeEl on Nov 12, 2009 10:13 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Okay then...

how about the Cubs eat a little more of Board Games salary?

I know Murphy is a valuable player against RH pitching. However I don’t think he’s an everyday COFer. I like the idea of him in a platoon or as a 4th OFer/PH. I don’t think I’m undervaluing him at all.

I think what you're underestimating is the value this club places on Murphy

They apparently like him more than Cruz, from what we’ve been lead to believe. And if they’d rather trade Cruz and make Murphy a starting OF, there’s no way the Rangers would ship Murphy to the Cubs just so they’ll eat more of Bradley’s salary.

if the Rangers are that stupid to trade Cruz and make Murphy a full-time

player then the FO has no idea what its doing, and that would not bode well for our chances of winning. Murphy is a 4th OFer. On his best year, he wouldn’t be an All-Star. Cruz, on the other hand, was an all-star last year and has a chance of improving a little. For the most part, I think what we got from Cruz is what he is, but I think he can improve against LHP. (i’m not getting into a debate about his splits for anyone concerned)

The Rangers

The Cubs aren’t going to get something of value back for Bradley. They killed his value when they deactivated him last year.

I wouldn’t consider trading them anyone off of the 40 man for him. No top prospects.

If they want something good then make them actually give up something that they value to get it.

id trade almost anyone. I think Murphy is a very valuable part of this team but he is just used poorly. He got 113 PAs against lefties last yr, that is about 113 too many.

OT: in a case of the rich getting richer

Yanks pursuing Halladay

Also mentions Millwood as another guy they might try to trade for, which could be interesting. I’m not sure who I’d want in return though. Maybe Hughes? I think they’ve screwed up Joba and wouldn’t want to go near him.

actually the Millwood thing wasn't mentioned there

I saw it somewhere else but I’m not sure where…

A-Rod

I think we trade Millwood and MY for A-Rod if they pick up $10 million of his salary (to make it salary neutral) and have them throw in a couple of arms in the process.

Tell me you don’t want to see A-Rod hitting between Kinsler, Cruz and Hamilton in the lineup:

LF: Borbon
SS: Andrus
2B: Kinsler
3B: A-Rod
CF: Hamilton
RF: Cruz
1B: Davis
DH: Murphy
C: Salty/Tea

I’ll take that lineup. I’d even bump Murphy to 2 and drop Elvis to 9

Very, very nice win from the Stars.

I still don't know what to make of them.

One night they’re dynamite, another night they’re flatter than water.

At least they finally won a shootout.

Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.
