Nope

He is actually one of the baseball coaches for the HS i went to. Then it was Denton Liberty Christian, it since relocated to Argyle.

Scary

This coming just a couple days after Robert Enke, goalkeeper for Hannover 96 and the German national team, threw himself in front of a train.

Looks like Wetteland realized he needed help- hopefully he’ll be OK.

Without getting into all the ways it is horrendous and hopefully without trivializing it too much, depression’s a bitch.

Yeah

Reading about his 2 year old daughter who passed away hurt me, a complete stranger from another culture. Some things transcend boundaries and losing a child is one of them.

I can’t even fathom the hell he must have been locked by his depression.

I hope that John gets the kind of help and support he needs to battle this and come out on top.

Dang ol'

I remember being a kid and him coming to my elementary school when he was still an LA Dodger and how nice and friendly he was. I was super pumped when he signed with the Rangers about 7 years after that.

I hope he gets things worked out.

Look at the positive

He recognized he had a problem, and he made a cry for help instead of jumping to the obvious step as so many do.

If you want some thoughts on suicide and you want to try and find the “why”, I reccomend watching the movie The Bridge, which is a documentary of the golden gate bridge, and the record number of suicides that happen there…

Thoughts and prayers go for John.

daily reader, lurker for the most part

I am not a lonestrajon hater, I like the perspective you bring. But you’ve stepped in it here, and the worst thing you can make after a mistake is an excuse. Just say you were wrong or move on, but please don’t make a bigger mistake by defending it.

by BrentTaylor21 on Nov 12, 2009 8:19 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Understood

But I don’t see where I did anything wrong here. I’ll defend myself when I think I’m right, and all I was doing was trying to add a little levity to a situation where there’s really not much you can do but say “gee, that sucks, hope he gets better” and move on.

Perhaps this isn’t an issue I should be trying to defend however, as that seems to be a taboo thing with some people, so I’ll leave it at that.

is this a reference to

“the worst thing you can make after a mistake is an excuse”? If Arod said it, he also got it from Rod Smith, the great wr for the Broncos. It was a quote attributed to him in an ESPN the Magazine piece on him YEARS ago, it has always stuck with me for whatever reason. I think it is because our natural inclination seems to be to do the opposite. See Wales, Josey.

Not really sure how my comment could be interpreted as appointing myself as the pc czar, but whatever. My hope is that one day I’ll have enough comments on lonestarball.com to have my thoughts/opinions actually considered on their merits. This notion that one needs X number of comments to have valid thoughts or to be an actual fan is pretty dumb.

I don't think it's really about the actual # of comments

As much as it is the fact that a lot of of new commenters who have shown up over the past year or so have been largely… subpar. Not that we don’t have a fair share of subpar veteran commenters too, but anyone who might be looked upon as a noob is kind of particularly looked upon with suspicion these days.

I agree with you though, comment totals shouldn’t be looked upon with that much meaning though. Shit, if that’s the criteria, that would make me LSB’s best poster, which certainly isn’t the case.

I hear you

But reading his comment, that actually seems to be his point. I created this profile over a year ago, read this blog on a regular basis long before that. I’m not some dmn commenter who came over here after posting vlad > dunn. I feel silly even having to substantiate my opinion. I’m sure there are many people who read but don’t comment because of cheap shit like this. Its fucking sad.

Josey

He’s a pain in the ass to read. I feel sorry for him, actually. He must be a lonely guy. I bet he has pictures of Mark Teixeira up in his house much like teenaged girls with Tiger Beat centerfolds of the Jonas Brothers.

My favorite poster is OC. His posts make me laugh. He knows how and when to use a GIF. LSJ makes me laugh for a completely different reason. I’ve become more of a reader than a poster. I guess I took too many things personally and I let it bother me. I’ve been out of the loop a bit but I’m back now.

Wetteland hospitalized in TexasComment Email Print Share ESPN.com news services

Mariners bullpen coach and former Rangers pitcher John Wetteland was hospitalized on Thursday afternoon for what officials called mental health issues.

A woman at Wetteland’s home in Texas called for help for a possibly suicidal person, according to the Denton County Sheriff’s office.

“She said he was complaining of being depressed and contemplating suicide,” Sgt. Roger Griggs said.

Police said Wetteland came out of the house with his hands in the air and asked for help.

Mariners officials told MLB.com that the organization was still gathering information and had no further comment.

Wetteland spent 12 seasons as a pitcher in the major leagues, retiring in 2000 with the Rangers. He was named the World Series MVP in 1996 with the New York Yankees. He has been the bullpen coach for the Mariners since December 2008.

The police say

the call was suicide-related and Wetteland received psychiatric care. The Mariners released a statement saying the whole deal was caused by Wetteland not taking his blood pressure meds and their was no threat of suicide.

Sounds like the Mariners are trying to sweep this thing under the rug, or at least thats how I interpreted the report.

by ncrangerfan on Nov 13, 2009 7:10 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yep

I agree that I believe there is a PR spin here….actually I have no doubt about that.

I really liked Wetteland, but:

1) I don’t know if there are too many 911 calls made due to high blood pressure issues, unless the person has a stroke, etc.

2) I don’t believe that the Denton County Sheriff’s Department usually “surround” a house because of a high blood pressure call.

3) I don’t believe that if you really needed help due to high blood pressure, that when you come out of the house with your hands up stating “I need help”, that you are saying to law enforcement who is surrounding your house, “Thanks for coming. Let me put my hands in the air and let you know that I need help because: 1) I didn’t take my blood pressure medicine; 2) I can’t find my blood pressure medicine.”

Obviously, something happened and that female that made that call did exactly the right thing. I believe she may have saved a life today. Apparently, he needed help and she recognized it….and didn’t wait and blow it off.

I don’t care what the Mariners want to say.

I miss 1989. I miss 1996. Please make me miss another season in 2008.

I agree with all this, however one thing has me stumped..

Denton Regional does not have a Psych Unit….if this were a mental health distress call he would’ve been taken to a hospital that does.

Who knows what’s going on, whatever it is I’m glad Wetteland is okay and that he continues to get whatever help he needs.

No Spin

I am not an expert by any means but how many people who get taken into custody by law enforcement and sent to a mental health facility are home 24 hours later? If there really was an issue wouldn’t it stand to reason that they would hold him longer that that?

on mental health calls

there is a thing called a “24 hour” hold…the doc holds you for 24 hrs, makes sure you are not a harm to yourself or others, then lets you go.

However, I have never seen one last exactly 24 hours. Typically the patient has to sign a release form and then they go on the 24 hour hold….The patient typically doesn’t sign the release until after they’ve been at the hospital awhile and have gone through a bunch of assessments from various docs, nurses, and qualified mental health professionals.

Not certain if this is 100% gospel but it’s how we roll at the mental health hospital I work at.
