Seems likely

That he’ll get 4 Million with incentives from someone. I hope we go that route rather than giving up a quality prospect for a guy like Vasquez. Not that Javier Vasquez isn’t awesome.

Vazquez

hasn’t been that awesome in the AL. He’s been a dominant NL guy, though.

Vazquez's tRA+'s in Chicago

130, 129, 128.

His only sub-par year in the AL was ‘04 with the Yanks. The FIP’s and BABIP’s from his Chicago years suggest their defense might’ve hurt him some, but other than that there’s really nothing to really support this idea that Vazquez can’t pitch in the AL.

Well, you said he hasn't been that awesome in the AL

Which he actually has.

And this isn’t really directed at you, either. The idea that Vazquez is only truly dominant in the NL has been floating around LSB for awhile now.

The reason for that

is because he’s never had as much success in the AL as in the NL. He pitched well with the DIPS, but the results just weren’t there the majority of the time he pitched in the AL. Part of that could very well be luck, but I don’t agree with the line of thinking that you just throw out that kind of trend without considering the possibility that he is one of many pitchers out there who can’t have as much success in the AL as the NL.

And all of this is a moot point because there is no way Vazquez accepts a trade here so its pointless to talk about him as a potential trade target.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Ot... but did anyone read this??
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — A top prospect for the San Francisco Giants has been stripped of his U.S. visa after he was charged with killing a man in his Caribbean homeland.

Pablo Peguero, the Giants’ representative for Latin America, said Friday that 19-year-old Angel Villalona can’t join the team in the United States because the U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic has revoked his visa.

Dominican prosecutor Jose Antonio Polanco said Tuesday that Villalona offered the family of the man he allegedly killed nearly $140,000 to drop the case against him. He alleged the first baseman paid $55,000 and expected to offer another $83,000.

Polanco said the family viewed the payment as compensation for the killing of 25-year-old Mario Felix de Jesus Velete.

The family has not returned repeated calls seeking comment. Villalona, who has pleaded innocent to the murder charge, also has declined to speak to reporters.

Police say Villalona, who received a $2.1 million signing bonus in his 2006 deal with the Giants, turned himself in 12 hours after the Sept. 19 bar shooting in La Romana. He could face up to 20 years in prison if found guilty.

Villalona was released last week on $14,000 bail after the family issued a statement saying it had accepted the money, Polanco said. A Dominican judge is expected to hear the case in about a month.

Villalona hit .267 with nine homers and 42 RBIs in 74 games for Class-A San Jose this season. Baseball America selected him as the Giants’ top prospect before the 2008 season, and the 6-foot-3, 200-pound slugger was selected for the Futures Game during All-Star festivities that year.

Anyone curious about his guilt or innocence now?

I'll believe it when I see it

Sheets is frail, and as much as I’d love to see him healthy and in a Rangers’ uniform, I will remain skeptical. I’d just hate to see the front office plan on him being in the rotation, and pass on making another move that might help the team long-term.

by egriffey on Nov 14, 2009 1:38 AM CST reply actions

How would Sheets prevent us from making another move that could help us longterm?

Are you afraid he might block Feliz’s ascension to a starting role? (Could be a legit concern, I guess.)

Worst case scenario probably is he comes in and stinks and/or gets hurt, we put him on the DL and the younger guys have a go for awhile. We’ll probably have wasted 4-5 mil or whatever if that happens, but hey, that’s free agency.

by LSJ on Nov 14, 2009 1:56 AM CST up reply actions

Well

Feliz being blocked is one possible negative outcome. And, who knows? Maybe there’s a trade or another more stable free-agent that the Rangers might be considering pulling the trigger on, but, because of their financial situation, having already invested 4-5 million in that shell of a man might prevent them from doing it.

That guy is an injury waiting to happen. And since there’s not much money to go around this offseason, I’m not sold on the idea of rolling the dice on him. I’d love to be wrong.

That's why they call them business sox

by egriffey on Nov 14, 2009 2:59 AM CST up reply actions

Feliz being blocked

I don’t buy that argument at this point.

He can go to the pen, and that’s fine, or he can go be a starter in AAA for a little while, and that would be fine.

Realistically, at this point, even if you don’t sign Sheets, Feliz probably isn’t in the rotation to start the season anyway.

by bigsteve on Nov 15, 2009 10:47 AM CST up reply actions

So you expect him to have reverse splits?

When he has crushed lefties throughout his career yet with Nelson Cruz you argue that hes going to crush lefties because its unfathomable to expect a guy to have reverse splits even though hes never been able to hit LHP in the majors?

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Nov 15, 2009 1:21 PM CST up reply actions

Huh?

What are you talking about reverse splits?

He had a .260 EQA last year. If he doesn’t improve significantly on that, he’s not going to be an every day DH.

by Adam J. Morris on Nov 15, 2009 2:25 PM CST up reply actions

Last year Vlad OPSed 831 against RHP and only 686 against LHP

For his career hes been 940 against RHP and 1000 against LHP. Last year he had reverse splits.

Nelson Cruz OPSed 898 against RHP last year and 752 against LHP. Reverse splits. Only Cruz for his career is a reverse splitter. 818 against RHP vs 740 against LHP.

Yet when I or Josey bring up the fact that Cruz has struggled against LHP and shouldn’t be counted on to mash them next year you argue that its an anomoly and because it doesn’t fit the normal mold of a RH bat mashing lefties better than righties we should ignore it. Yet now you are saying a guy who has crushed lefties in his career can’t be counted on next year because of one year?

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Nov 15, 2009 2:31 PM CST up reply actions

You are making no sense

You said Vlad could be the every day DH. I said he needs to improve significantly on last year’s .260 EQA to make him worthwhile as an everyday DH.

And to answer the random reverse split question you threw in there, no, I don’t expect Vlad to continue to have reverse splits, and I am pretty sure I’ve never said otherwise.

by Adam J. Morris on Nov 15, 2009 2:40 PM CST up reply actions

Just a miscommunication is all

I was talking more about the RH bat that mashes lefties part than the everyday DH part. You were obviously the opposite.

by bigsteve on Nov 15, 2009 2:49 PM CST up reply actions

Ah

Okay. Yeah, if you could get Vlad as a platoon DH, then that would be fine. But you’d have to pay him as a platoon DH, which I don’t know that he’d do.

by Adam J. Morris on Nov 15, 2009 3:03 PM CST up reply actions

Did you see my reply to you

in Friday’s morning thread? Look at how much Vlad’s OPS has slipped the last 3 years against lefties.

G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....

by t ball on Nov 16, 2009 2:00 PM CST up reply actions

I think there are much better options for that role.

Vlad’s a guy I take a chance on only after I’ve exhausted other options of acquiring the three other guys who could affect the entire offense overall as well as produce against lefties. I just don’t think he’s that good a fit here.

We’re always looking for cheap effective pitching, however, and Sheets is a TORP talent who could come cheap on a 1-2 year deal. That’s a gamble I like a lot better than a gimpy, declining DH who is fourth or fifth best among the available options.

This sounds like

when Juan Gonzalez said he was going to be healthy, picked up a years salary, and was back in Puerto Rico before June,

There is no chance I would sign him without most of the money being based on games played incentives.

by DJCahill on Nov 14, 2009 5:24 AM CST reply actions

Me either

But you know some dumbass team will offer him at least some guaranteed money, so that’s where the benchmark will be set. I don’t think he’ll end up here. If he does and it’s on a deal like that’s extremely heavily incentive laden, I guess I’d actually be happy with that. Otherwise it’s hard to get excited about all this talk about bringing all these injury prone players on board. Recipe for disaster.

Harden, yes

Harden...

won’t he get more money than the Rangers can afford though?

Even with all his injuries I expect him to get somewhere around a 3/30. Although it’s still really tough to tell where the market is going to be this year.

by rentz on Nov 14, 2009 2:35 PM CST up reply actions

Same here

You’ll probably have to pay Harden a little too much and he’s going to spend some time on the DL, but when the guy isn’t on the DL he is utterly dominant. He’s going to strike out 10+ per 9, walk a third as many batters as he Ks, and give up just over one baserunner an inning.

Those numbers aren’t that easy to come by. Even if he spends time on the DL and makes 15-20 starts, those 15-20 starts are likely to be MUCH better than the same 15-20 starts from any other options.

Put another way, filling a back-end rotation slot with Harden plus a middling injury replacement is better than filling that slot with any other back-end option for the whole season.
